Portrait of the Duke of Zhou, a historical figure whose semblance SCP-XXXX usually adopts.

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: One Class-D personnel dreaming of SCP-XXXX (henceforth known as the 'dreamer') is to be permanently kept in a medically induced coma, and kept in a one-room cell in Complex-403 at Site-17. The cell is to be furnished with one bed, one EKG machine, one EEG machine, one ventilator, one catheter, and one IV drip. Onsite medical personnel are to provide the required nursing care for the dreamer, while exercising precautions to ensure that the dreamer remains in their coma. The dreamer's EEG waveform is to be monitored at all times by at least two research and/or medical staff.

The dreamer's cell is to be enclosed within a square larger cell housing at least eight other Class-D personnel (henceforth known as the 'sleepers'). This outer cell is to be furnished as per standard humanoid containment cells. Sleepers are prohibited from leaving their cell, but are allowed to request for entertainment and comfort materials that do not compromise security. Requests are subject to approval from research staff of Security Clearance Level 3 and above who are familiar with SCP-XXXX. Currently, a request for internet access is being reviewed by Level 4 research and security staff.

All former dreamers are to be prohibited from entering SCP-XXXX's containment area in Complex-403.

In the event when the dreamer's EEG waveform cease to exhibit the characteristic signs of a dream involving SCP-XXXX, or when the dreamer is awoken from their coma (henceforth known as a 'Checkmate Incident'), at least eight sleepers in the outer cell are to be administered with Class-E sedatives and attached to EEG machines. Within two hours, should a sleeper's EEG waveform exhibit the characteristic signs of a dream involving SCP-XXXX, the sleeper will then be redesignated as the dreamer, and moved into the inner cell and maintained in a medically-induced coma. Subsequently, should the number of remaining sleepers fall below eight, additional Class-D personnel are to be assigned to meet the required number of sleepers.

In the event where none of the sleepers EEG waveforms exhibit the characteristic signs of a dream involving SCP-XXXX more than two hours after a Checkmate Incident, all personnel in Complex-403 are to execute Procedure XXXX-B-42 until a new dreamer has been identified and contained within the inner cell.

Upon awakening, all former dreamers are to be interviewed as soon as possible and, if required, administered with Class-A or Class-B amnesiacs after the interview.

The Foundation has yet to ascertain when and where SCP-XXXX first manifested, and how many people have come into contact with SCP-XXXX. Task Force Theta-30 is currently investigating potential SCP-XXXX encounters, identifying former dreamers, and retrieving any materials related to SCP-XXXX. Potential former dreamers are to be detained and interviewed before being administered with Class-B retrograde amnesiacs. Materials related to SCP-XXXX are to be secured in Site-17.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an entity that can only be encountered in a dream. Based on accounts from former dreamers, SCP-XXXX almost invariably takes on the appearance of a middle-aged Chinese court official from the Western Zhou era (c. 1046 – 771 BC), although it has taken on other forms (including inanimate objects). Dreamers have reported that SCP-XXXX engaged them in conversation, mostly about politics and philosophy, in particular traditional Chinese philosophy. SCP-XXXX communicates in a language that the dreamer is fluent in, including but not limited to English, German, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Irish, Basque, Bahasa Indonesia, and Shanghainese.

During these conversations, SCP-XXXX has exhibited knowledge that a person who lived in China during the Western Zhou era would not be aware of, such as modern history or even future events. From time to time, SCP-XXXX had revealed information about the SCP Foundation and anomalous objects, entities, and phenomena known to the Foundation, such as the plot of SCP-1706, how to create an SCP-2361 instance, the location of Site-██, and [DATA EXPUNGED].

SCP-XXXX also usually invites the dreamer to play a traditional strategy board game. Go is SCP-XXXX's preferred game, although it has also played International Chess, Xiangqi, draughts, several Mancala games, and Reversi. The dreamer's proficiency in the game appears to have no bearing on the game chosen by SCP-XXXX, and SCP-XXXX appears to be highly proficient in every game that it plays. When SCP-XXXX is about to win, or wins the game, a Checkmate Incident will trigger and the dreamer will awaken. Occasionally, if SCP-XXXX chose to play Go, the game would approach the anomalous position that triggers an instance of SCP-2361, but dreamers always awaken before the position is attained. Dreamers are sometimes awoken after being frightened, in a manner akin to waking up from a nightmare. Regardless of the reason why the dreamer woke up, they tend to be able to recall the dream with vivid clarity for up to ten minutes after awakening, after which the memories typically become hazy or completely lost. Instances where a former dreamer continues to remember the entirely or parts of the dream are rare and mostly restricted to extremely traumatic or highly unusual dreams.

The first known case of an SCP-XXXX encounter occurred in Chongqing, China, on ██/██/1959. A farmer claimed to have played chess with the Duke of Zhou in his dreams, where the latter informed him about the ███ ██ ████████████ that would take place in 196█, and that the [DATA REDACTED]. SCP-XXXX was first suspected to possess anomalous properties by Agent S███████ on 21/04/20██ after SCP-XXXX [DATA REDACTED]. Attempts to contain SCP-XXXX succeeded only on 28/02/20██.

Since, Checkmate Incident ██ it was confirmed that eight sleepers would able to reliably contain SCP-XXXX in the event of a Checkmate Incident, and Procedure-XXXX-B-42 would be executed in the extremely unlikely event of a containment breach. According to Transcript XXXX-███, it was determined that once a person has encountered SCP-XXXX once, they will not be able to encounter SCP-XXXX again.
