(WIP SCP: Underwater Wormhole)

Item #: SCP-?

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the similarity in anomalous properties to SCP-123, all actions regarding SCP-? should be taken with great caution. The cave entrance has been sealed and covered in rock and coral similar to its surroundings. Level 4 clearance or higher is required to gain access. Inside is Site 789, where SCP-? is housed. As there is currently no known method of moving its location, the facility was built around SCP-?. Attempts to isolate the section of the ocean were blocked by Greek authorities, who will remain anonymous.

The Facility is at shallow levels of 15 meters, and 500 meters from the nearest shore, though fortunately the Site itself is in a small alcove shielded from public view. To ensure the area is clear when entering and exiting the Facility, internal Site staff comprising of two level 4s and one level 5 are permitted to enact Transfer Procedure A. - - - — — -—, — --- --- — — --- (A storm alert will be issued, in which thunder and lightning will be simulated by the Organisation). Once the area is clear, agents are required to begin Transfer Procedure B, which involves submerging in a pressurised Submarine around 1km away from the entrance and travelling for around 20 minutes, although it should be assumed half an hour is required to enter the facility before storm alerts end. For contingency, there will be 40 minutes total from start to end of the storm alert. The same time will be given for those leaving the Site, though staff will be required to stay on-site for two weeks minimum. Once inside the facility, standard universal Site procedures are to be followed.

No more than 30 (thirty) D-Class are to be held in the cells, with low-level amnesiacs administered on entry and on return to the surface to remove any memory of the travel. Any failure from D-Class to comply during transfer, lock-up or testing can be met with threat to terminate, which can be enacted upon second refusal (though judgement is left to on-site staff for best actions to take. D-Class are invaluable for maintaining the facility, and transferring new ones in can take time). With current plans in place to expand the Facility, more grunt work may prove necessary in the future. As of Addendum-5, no further expansion plans are being considered, due to the dangerous nature of SCP-?. The maximum number of D-Class will remain the same.

The recommended on-site Staff list includes 2 level 2 staff members, 2 scientists, 2 level 4s and a level 5. All should be familiar with aquatic SCP protocol and ready for potential pressure changes. All D-Class should be used for maintaining the Facility when not being used in testing.

SCP-? is to be kept in the centre of a 5x5x5 (five times five times five) meter AL-6XN room, filled with the seawater that surrounds the facility. For the purposes of testing, it must be possible to drain the water to 1 meter.

Description: SCP-? is a small vortex, around 2x2x5 (two times two times 5) centimeters in a fixed position, suspended in place. Similar to SCP-123, it's gravitational force gets stronger in a radius of 3.98m. What separates the two objects, requiring separate identification, is that it apparently only affects sentient life, primarily humans. While the gravitational force clearly increases when in close proximity, no recording instruments or other non-humanoid entities are influenced by SCP-?’s pull. When within range, sentient life will feel a compulsion to get closer to SCP-?, the compulsion growing stronger in relation to proximity with the object. SCP-?’s other anomalous properties become present at 1.78 meters; subjects have reported hearing voices of deceased friends, family or partners. Some have reported hearing voices who they couldn't have known passed away, as they were in Foundation property at the time of death. These voices will attempt to entice the subject to the other side in a positive manner at first, promising a better life, though will become more pleading and desperate after either approximately 4 refusals to cross to the other side, or a minute has passed. Once any part of the subject’s body comes within 20 centimetres, they will be pulled inside, and all other matter that follows the subject will be pushed out of the vortex between 5 and 15 seconds after there are no more subjects are caught in its gravity.

SCP-? was discovered after reports of an entire diving group going missing off the coast of --— (alveoli village). As the tides and weather were not challenging during the approximate time of disappearance, as well as an assortment of diving equipment washing up on shore 3 weeks later, the initial police report was halted while the Foundation investigated. The transcript between the diving team (SUB) and the communication team (COMMS) are in the Discovery Log for Event-? at the bottom of the page.

It is currently unknown how an entire human could be pulled inside the vortex due to its small size, though it is hypothesized that it acts similarly to a black hole, where mass is heavily compressed on entry. No creature that has entered the other side has made it back, despite attempts to fasten and harness subjects to the room. Any attempt to do so ends up with the vortex rejecting the items, as if spitting them out, once the subject has entered the vortex, rendering it impossible to send any tracking or recording equipment through. Therefore, it is impossible to know if there's anything on the other side, or if it leads to an instant death.

While it was first assumed that the vortex floated in the water, the drainage of water does not cause it to move from its location, though it is far more visible when submerged as air bubbles are naturally drawn to, but not absorbed by, SCP-?. When in air, the vortex appears as a slight shifting ripple in space, akin to a wormhole. The height of the object forces influenced subjects to jump if they wish to enter SCP-?, making it slightly easier to place restrictions on subjects by using a harness with rope of 4 meters in length, allowing subjects close enough to feel its intense draw without being absorbed by SCP-?.

Discovery Log ?: 3 Foundation members dived to the reported locations, following the route the local diving company often took. SUB Team wore standard equipment, with a diving mask. Communication equipment, including a camera with audio that fed to the COMMS team and a microphone inside the mask, were given to each diver. The transcript begins midway into their exploration.

SUB-1: Man, it's cold down here. Why is it so cold? Why is this even worth investigating?

SUB-3: We’re diving in the off-season. What did you expect? 30°C waters?

SUB-1: Bite me, Bryony.

COMMS: Sub Team, please stay focused on the objective.

SUB-1: Alright, alright, just find it ridiculous that some divers felt the need to just rip off their clothes underwater. No wonder they died down here. Morons.

-a minute of silence as divers proceed along the route-

SUB-2: Hey… Hey Sam, look at this! Shine a light here so the cameras pick it up.

-SUB-1 sighs, and turns his body to face SUB-2. He shines the light in his direction. A rubber shoe is caught on a jagged rock at an entrance to a cave.-

SUB-1: You seeing this, Sir?

COMMS: Affirmative. Please proceed into the cave.

-SUB Team confirms action. No verbal communication for 2 minutes. Video feed shows long tunnel with no remarkable features.-

SUB-3: Jesus, just how big is this cave? I'm surprised we haven't seen any bodies yet. How many were in the group that went missing, 4? 5?

COMMS: Proceed for 3 more minutes then return. We’ll send you in again once you're refilled.

SUB-1: Hold that thought. Sir, I think we've come to the end.

-SUB-1 increases the power of his lamp. The walls illuminate, showing a cavern in a relative spherical shape-

COMMS: SUB Team, can you confirm the size of the area?

SUB-2: I don't know. It's … weirdly shaped. Maybe 10 meters in all directions

COMMS: Can you reconfirm size, SUB Team?

-SUB Team all agrees-

COMMS: Look around for any more diving equipment, and search for any bodies. Then we can all go home.

-SUB-2 and SUB-3 split up for approximately 2 minutes. SUB-1 continues to light up the surroundings. BCDs, air tanks and wetsuits are found-

COMMS: Alright, it appears the equipment lines up with the missing divers. All accounted for, aside from the corpses. Return to the boat, we’ll return to shore and send you back in with better suited research tools.

-SUB-2 and SUB-3 begin to swim towards SUB-1, swimming through the middle of the area. SUB-2 is observed to suddenly be pulled to one side, making noises of shock and surprise, shouting expletives-

SUB-3: Adam! What's going on?

-No response from SUB-2, as he frantically tries to swim against some unseen force. After 10 seconds of resistance, he begins to fall backwards in the water, out of control. He begins shouting for help, as SUB-3 swims towards him. Suddenly, SUB-2 stops resisting, and turns around to face the direction of the pull.-

SUB-2: Anise…?

-SUB-2 disappears from view, his camera feed cutting out and the mic turning to static. SUB-3 is also caught in the pull, eventually succumbing to the same symptoms as SUB-2. Recording equipment also cuts off. SUB-1 and COMMS attempt communication for 10 more seconds, before SUB-2 and SUB-3s dive gear re-enters the cavern as if from nothing. SUB-1 appears flustered and upset, sobbing into his mic. 3 minutes pass before he is composed again.-

COMMS: SUB-1, do you copy?

-no response-

COMMS: SUB-1, please confirm if you can hear this.

SUB-1: Yes sir.

COMMS: Please return to the surface. It appears we may need a different approach.

SUB-1: Copy. Request to ask you something, Sir?

COMMS: Granted.

SUB-1: What in the fuck just happened?

-End of Transcript-

Interview log 1, between SUB-1 and Level 4 Scientist Dr. Wren:

Dr. Wren: Please state your name and position.

SUB-1: Samuel -- (Harkes). Level 1 Aquatic Facility personnel. Part of the SUB Team. Well, I was. -SUB-1 gives off a faint chuckle-

Dr. Wren: can you please state what happened during Event-?.

SUB-1: -pause- Are you being serious?

Dr. Wren: Please answer the question, Mr. --.

SUB-1: What the hell? You've got all the footage! What the fuck do you need to know that you haven't already seen?

Dr. Wren: We’re just trying to get a primary account. Please don't feel we’re attacking you. We need to know as much as we can about this event before proceeding—

SUB-1: That's all that matters to you scientists, isn't it? Fucking answers! Don't give two shits about us grunts, do you? I'm not a criminal, I'm not like those D-class scum. I didn't steal anything, or break the law, or murder anyone, don't you be so goddamn condescending.

Dr. Wren: Mr. --, please calm down.

SUB-1: Ok. Ok. I'm sorry. It's just… it's been a hard week, you know? Seeing two of your co-workers vanish, right in front of you. I could have done something. I could have— -SUB-1 stops himself- Could you repeat yourself, Doc?

Dr. Wren: I just want you to describe what happened, Sam.

SUB-1: Alright. -pause- For the most part, the exploration of the cave was without incident. It was just another false callout, no big deal. Until we got to that huge dome thing. Again, nothing appeared out of the ordinary at first. The other two swam around the area, inspecting the nooks and crannies with their smaller torches. We found some of the missing equipment, but no bodies. That was strange, looking back, but we didn't think anything of it. We should've fucking thought something of it and got the hell out of there. We waited just too long though, just as the other two ended up too close to… whatever the hell got them. What are the chances? What were the chances of us being just a bit too close to that thing?

Dr. Wren: what happened following them being affected by the object?

SUB-1: It's pretty much as you've seen, Doc. They started getting pulled in. There was no chance for them after that. Maybe if they'd been on land, they could’ve resisted well enough to get away, but in water, there's just no stopping power. No friction. But then, when they got closer, they almost… gave up. Like they wanted to get dragged in. As if they'd heard someone say something to them. I know Adam heard something. He spoke back to the voice. It was the last thing he said. ‘Anise’, that's what he said.

Dr. Wren: And who exactly is Anise?

SUB-1: I think that was the name of his girlfriend from years ago. Things were getting serious between them, but she died. Car accident. I guess they're together now, huh?

Dr. Wren: I see. -pause- That'll be all for today, SUB-1. You may return to your quarters.

-End of Transcript. Following this interview, SUB-1 was administered amnestics to remove memory of the event, upon his request, and returned to his family with a moderate amount of money akin to the line of work he uses as an alibi, - - --- (oil rig maintenance). His mental state was too fragile to return to this line of work. Dr. Wren recommended putting him on the Foundation’s Suicide watch list.-
