Item #: SCP-XXXX

D-43214 experiencing Mid/Late-stage symptoms of SCP-XXXX.

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Viable substances capable of spreading SCP-XXXX are to be securely stored and kept at a temperature of three (3) to four (4) degrees Celsius. Testing of SCP-XXXX must be approved by personnel possessing a minimum of Level 4 Security Clearance. Hosts carrying SCP-XXXX are to be kept in an appropriately sized cell and given standard living conditions. All personnel entering the cell must do so through a secure airlock and are subject to initial decontamination, in addition to wearing provided hazard equipment. All personnel exiting the cell are subject to additional decontamination and must have hazard equipment incinerated before exiting the airlock. All personnel potentially exposed to SCP-XXXX are to be quarantined for a minimum of two (2) weeks, after which being examined by an on-site medical professional. Instances of SCP-XXXX-01 depicting predatory behavior are to be fed an appropriately sized prey item once every three (3) to four (4) days in addition to being given ample supply of fresh water. In the event that an instance of SCP-XXXX-01 is terminated, the cell is to be thoroughly decontaminated.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an unidentified, parasitic plant native to [REDACTED] in East Asia. SCP-XXXX is unable to grow in traditional growing medium, requiring a living host for initial growth and development. Throughout infection, instances of SCP-XXXX will begin to decompose and use organic matter from its host for the resources and energy needed for growth. Instances of SCP-XXXX are transmittable through a pollen-like substance produced by subjects during later stages of infection. This pollen-like substance is capable of spreading SCP-XXXX due to its airborne properties, causing infection if inhaled or entering an open wound. The incubation period of SCP-XXXX averages around eight (8) to twelve (12) hours after infection, but can differ from subject to subject based on various factors. Early symptoms will begin to show during this period.

After approximately two (2) to seven (7) days after initial infection, unidentified vines and roots will begin to grow throughout and outside of the body as SCP-XXXX continues to grow, further sustaining itself on the host. Inside the body, SCP-XXXX begins to grow in a way that mimics the appearance and function of its host's anatomy such as nerves, muscles, skeletal structure, and vital organs. Later through this stage, SCP-XXXX grows towards the head of the subject, burrowing through the skull and attaching itself to the brain. SCP-XXXX will alter and influence the behavior of its host through an unidentified process after successfully attaching to the brain. Subjects carrying SCP-XXXX begin to experience more extreme symptoms.

After approximately one (1) to three (3) weeks after initial infection, SCP-XXXX will replace and assume the function of approximately 60-80% of the host's body, including the brain in the majority of cases. At this stage, the host will begin to grow a large, unidentified flower-like structure from the front of the head, originating inside the skull and measuring approximately 25-45 cm in diameter. The structure produces and contains the pollen-like substance coated in a natural adhesive substance, capable of infecting new hosts, in addition to emitting a sweet smelling odor.

The odor emitted by the flower-like structure is capable of attracting various species of pollinators of which the pollen-like substance attaches to, resulting in an additional transmission vector. The color of the structure varies from host to host, with the most common colors including red, pink, purple, and orange. Death of the host is certain after replacement of the brain with SCP-XXXX in this stage of infection. However, some motor functions and other behaviors from the host are retained by SCP-XXXX in the replacement of the brain, resulting in an instance of SCP-XXXX-01.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-01 are blind, with their ability to hear is significantly degraded. Because of their lack of senses, instances of SCP-XXXX-01 possess a heightened sense of touch and increased sensitivity to vibrations in order to navigate the surrounding environment. Most original brain function including personality and memory from the original host is lost during the conversion to SCP-XXXX-01. Instances of SCP-XXXX-01 are, in most cases, docile, paying minimal to no attention to nearby organisms as long as the host's body has not been entirely consumed, still supplying energy and resources to SCP-XXXX. Once SCP-XXXX has consumed the entirety of the host, SCP-XXXX-01 will begin to show predatory behavior towards nearby organisms. After successfully terminating a prey item, instances of SCP-XXXX-01 will begin to feed through an additional needle-like appendage capable of extending from the center of the flower-like structure, approximately twenty-four (24) to forty-eight (48) inches at full extension. Dissection of SCP-XXXX-01 instances shows that this appendage connects to the replaced digestive system, utilizing its ability to extract the resources and energy needed by SCP-XXXX. Instances of SCP-XXXX-01 are capable of surviving one (1) to two (2) weeks without any access to potential prey items, with any longer resulting in the casualty of SCP-XXXX-01. Whether or not instances of SCP-XXXX-01 are sentient is unknown.
