Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept within a small box in which the top surface is made of transparent glass - part from which it must be opened from without changing the laterals forms - and the sides a opaque material; the measures of the box must fit the object perfectly, and leave no visible gaps on its laterals.
The SCP-XXXX is to remain inside a locked room with at least 1 armed guard designed for its inspection solely, cameras must also be placed in SCP-XXXX containment room and its footage must be under security watch at all times. In case of damages to the opaque sides of the box, personnel entering the room to replace the box are instructed to avoid both eye contact and physical contact of no more than 3 seconds with the pages and any other type of content contained within SCP-XXXX's book cover.
Experiments by the research team regarding SCP-XXXX must require clearance of level 3 or higher, being that every individual involved in the process must receive a psychological exam before and afterwards, proceeding to treatment if necessary. Experiments with SCP-XXXX must now receive direct permission from the O5 due to high threats of Foundation Exposure and unexpected chain reactions.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a large book of a thickness of 70mm, length of 231mm and width of 162mm, in which the cover has a complete black coloration. Although relatively small, it weighs approximately 12kg. Test subjects, about 60%, have also stated that the SCP-XXXX has an apparent infinite amount of pages, contradicting the approximate 1080 pages as seen and calculated by observers on the research team. The book also shows no cover information, such as author and title.
Attempts at reading or seeing through the pages of SCP-XXXX lasted a maximum of 14 seconds without receiving severe side-effects, with an average of 9 seconds. Individuals who tried to
explain and iterate on what they have read or seen failed to speak in a significant and coherent sense during the first seconds of exposure. It was also discovered that those with less aptitude in specific areas, including: physics, mathematics, psychology, philosophy and languages and codes, when asked to describe the SCP-XXXX's contents, would most of the time answer that they were simply "indescribable", and nothing more.
Further observation and any sort of exposure to the object that can result in any kind of theoretical or/and technical analysis of its contents, such as: attempts to read the pages, feel the pages by touch, or use any type of data collecting tool, will result in severe and likely permanent psychological harm. Those affected by the SCP-XXXX have shown highly unstable behaviors; agressive states, suicide attempts and "conspiracy intentions", besides gaining extreme traumas. A fifth common behavior demonstrated to have more intrinsic origins on the SCP-XXXX's pages; part of the individuals will attempt to demonstrate what they have seem and/or read, by drawing "physically incomprehensible" texts, symbols, images and also speaking unrecognizable words by any means necessary, a phenomenon that has been theorized to be more ideological and influenced by SCP-XXXX, rather than controlled directly by it. The physical representations and spoken words of the book's supposed content will also lead others nearby to collapse into the same mental state as the ones affected, following the same patterns of a normal analysis of SCP-XXXX's pages, and potentially resulting in threatening chain reactions.
Addendum-01a: The book was discovered buried in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S, in the ██████████, under the tombstone of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, on the date of ██/██/20██.
Addendum-01b: It appears that looking at SCP-XXXX while this one is closed can also affect the individual, more specifically the view of the edges and borders of each page, although the process is slightly slower than usual, at a difference of 7-13.5 seconds (see incident XXXX-01).
Addendum-01c: Those reading SCP-XXXX for more than 30 seconds, without exception, have manifested some sort of before nonexistent physical form, ranging from objects to living entities. All of the instances generated hold the same mental effects and properties as the products of SCP-XXXX's pages, thus making the analysis of such instances significantly difficult, and their threat even higher. Individuals with low marks on the aptitude tests have been reported to take a longer time to demonstrate any initial side-effects, and those are more likely to keep reading until the 30 seconds mark is reached, but this does not seem to apply completely to the opposite when in specific cases of fanaticism or "devotion" (see incident XXXX-07).
Addendum-02a: Below is a list of the experiment logs made on SCP-XXXX.
Interviewed: Test subject D-5344 is Caucasian male with average results in the intelligence aptitude tests and I.Q tests-alike.
Interviewer: Dr.L████.
Foreword: First experiment with attempts to hold proper information out of SCP-XXXX's content and influence, occured on Date:██/██/20██.
<Begin Log>
Dr.L████: Open the book and describe what you see.
Subject opens the book and starts reading it.
D-5344: What?
8.23 seconds have passed reading SCP-XXXX. D-5344 turns to Dr.L████.
D5344: What is this?! It makes no sen-.
Dr.L████: Please, continue reading the book and describe it for us.
Test subject turns his attention to SCP-XXXX.
D-5344: It's weird. Like the words overlap each other, but not really the text, but the ink instead. Each symbol has its depth, and it hurts, it…
15.12 seconds have passed reading SCP-XXXX. Subject is in complete silence.
Dr.L████: What hurts, Mr.[REDACTED]? Keep describing.
18.78 seconds have passed reading SCP-XXXX. Subject turns his attention to Dr.L████ once again, getting one step closer. D-5344 is showing high nervousness.
D-5344: The depth! The red hissing that falls in it, it comes, it's all in me I know it!
Dr.L████: There is no hissing, subject, proceed to the book reading.
D-5344: No! I must fix it, maybe then I will see it! All of it!
D-5344 begins to scratch her eyes aggressively, causing extreme bleeding.
Dr.L████: Restrain him, for god's sake.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: After a long-term psychological treatment, which ended up being specifically developed for this case, D-5344 recovered to his previous mental state. When asked about what he had seen in the book, he answered how all of it is now "so scrambled" in his head.
Interviewed: Test subject D-6001 is a Caucasian female with high results in the specifically gathered aptitude tests, I.Q tests-alike, involving mathematics, languages and codes, and psychology.
Interviewer: Dr.D█████.
Foreword: Attempts of testing the influence of SCP-XXXX and its contents through an individual with higher capabilities of dissertation and interpretation, besides general knowledge of many areas, which occured on the Date:██/██/20██.
<Begin Log>
Dr.D█████: Open the book and make the best description of whatever it is you see.
D-6001: I see… Hm, almost like forms that do not exist, it's hard to… conceive. Non-euclidean objects right, is that how they're called?
8.4 seconds have passed reading SCP-XXXX.
Dr.D█████: Yes, proceed. Try to find a different definition.
D-6001: Oh my god, the pages seem to drop indefinitely below. The alignments on these texts, they form a structure of a…
14.30 seconds have passed reading SCP-XXXX. D-6001 steps back from SCP-XXXX.
Dr.D█████: What happened, subject?
D-6001 begins speaking in a unrecognizable language.
Dr.D█████: What are you trying to say, D-6001? I can't understand, speak clearly.
//About 8 seconds after D-6001 began speaking, the subject raises his right hand as if holding an object and moving it towards her left wrist. The wrist gets cut apart precisely although no sharp object was sighted, causing severe bleeding, D-6001 dives her hand in the blood.
Dr.D█████: Guards! Stop her immediately!
The guards disobey Dr.D█████, following the same pattern as D-6001, uttering "incomprehensible" words.
Dr.D█████: What are you all doing?!
D-6001 starts to draw a symbol on the ground using her blood, the guards seem to do the same, collecting blood from her wrist, and connecting their drawings progressively.
Dr.D█████: What is that thing you're doing? What are these voices?! The… Structure! No!
//Dr.D█████ leaves the room.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: The clearing of the Containment Cell █████'s abnormalities showed increasing difficulties. The drawings and voices uttered by the individuals affected by SCP-XXXX seemed to affect others nearby hearing or observing the events for the same periods estimated to the collapse of those reading SCP-XXXX. The cell and nearby area was disposed of with the use of different demolition tools and chemical agents, where everything else was buried in the Site-██.
[REDACTED] were lost, mostly due to suicide, and D-6001 did not survive the blood loss. Dr.D█████ suffered from minor psychological traumas, and recovered with the right treatment.
Further testings with SCP-XXXX have been interrupted until new orders are given.
Addendum-02b:
Date:██/██/20██
Summary of Incident XXXX-01: After Experiment XXXX-01, Dr.L████ was found dead on his own office, in what is believed to have been a case of suicide. Through brief investigations, it was found out that Dr.L████ had exposed himself to SCP-XXXX in a peculiar way earlier that day.
Cameras on SCP-XXXX's containment cell showed Dr.L████, who stayed after the experiment, staring at SCP-XXXX. Although SCP-XXXX had been closed, Dr.L████ was in clear state of influence due to the object's unknown forces, as he was murmuring incomprehensible words and acting nervous. And so it was noted that Dr.L████ kept looking exactly at the edges of the pages of SCP-XXXX.
New containment procedures must be incorporated.
Date:██/██/20██
Summary of Incident XXXX-05: This incident is what caused the existence of SCP-XXXX-1, an anomaly that replaced the Containment Cell ████ at the Site-██.
SCP-XXXX-1 holds the same side-effects of reading SCP-XXXX, but in an "audiovisual" manner, such as the products of those affected by SCP-XXXX. The sighting or hearing of the anomaly can cause severe psychological damage, and due to the apparent size of SCP-XXXX-1, the Foundation has gathered efforts to avoid any sort of human development in an radius of 35km, besides the purveyance of necessary structure to avoid any possible visual contact with SCP-XXXX-1.
The following is a transcription of the experiment that resulted in Incident XXXX-05.
- Document IV - Experiment XXXX-04
Interviewed: D-7543 is a Caucasian male with one of the best results in the specifically gathered aptitude tests, I.Q tests-alike, involving mathematics, languages and codes, philosophy, physics and psychology.
Interviewer: Dr.██████
Attention & Summary: Attempts to analyze SCP-XXXX's content through D-7543's unique capabilities. Most of data has been eliminated due to the recording of this log in advanced recording devices and not manually, which was later shown to have transcribed "unknown" text and data, affecting those who tried to read it.
<Begin Log>
Dr.██████: Begin the reading.
D-7543: Sure.
5 seconds passed reading SCP-XXXX.
Dr.██████: Look at me and describe to me what you've read.
D-7543: I could be wrong. But there seems to be some sort of calculations regarding specific structures that… that…
Dr.██████: That what?
D-7543: The structures… Their shapes. I think those formats simply… Don't exist. At least not in our world.
Dr.██████: I see. Can you dissert on the calculations you've mentioned?
D-7543: Not really. They have patterns and also random variables all the same, besides, the structure of them seem different, like… Let me see.
D-7543 looks at SCP-XXXX pages once again.
Dr.██████: Subject! You're not supposed to keep readi-.
D-7543: Just a moment, I'm sure I will get it this time.
7.34 seconds passed reading SCP-XXXX. D-7543 starts looking around the room.
Dr.██████: Subject? Guards, restrain D-7543.
The personnel starts moving towards D-7543.
D-7543: The walls, yes. I see it all, references made this, the "above" is reachable I am sure. [DATA EXPUNGED]
As D-7543 speaks, the walls and whole structure of the containment cell goes through a transformation process, or are replaced by a different material.
Dr.██████: What is this? Red and glowy, I can see the others beyond the everything… How are they not the highest, the mightiest?!
The guards start shooting everyone in the room, however, no one dies, instead they are left bleeding in what seems to an unending process.
D-7543: The walls always hiding it and all. The Truth! The strange god!
D-7543: The true era will come… [DATA EXPUNGED]
The process of the walls intensifies, eventually making the cell the largest product coming from SCP-XXXX's influence while inhereting its psychological properties.
<End Log>
Observations: Many personnel and Foundation facilities nearby the area were affected, compromising part of Site-██.
Containment procedures must be revised, and further experimentations with SCP-XXXX requires direct authorization of the O5.
SCP-XXXX-1 is to be eliminated at all costs. Recent attempts have shown partial success, and others great losses of Foundation employees and resources. The process to dispose of SCP-XXXX-1 is still ongoing, and will likely be dealt with soon.
Date:██/██/20██
Summary of Incident XXXX-07: The incident occured due to a containment breach, where D-████ escaped his cell, killed the ████ Foundation employee and headed straight to the containment cell of SCP-XXXX, opening it with the killed employee's "authorization". As of this moment, the containment cell of SCP-XXXX held many advanced recording devices. The following is a part of the transcription during D-████'s trespassing.
<Begin Log>
D-████: Here we are again, my [DATA EXPUNGED].
D-████ opens SCP-XXXX.
D-████: The act is real. And it's up to me to find its theater.
Visceral sounds can be heard. The cameras' initial footage reveals random cuts and wounds opening in D-████'s body, the rest of the footage data was eliminated by the Foundation for safety purposes.
D-████: [DATA EXPUNGED]
<End Log>
Observations: D-████ was one of the subjects in the Experiment XXXX-██, and although marked as recovered after a period of treatment, it seems D-████ was in fact lying about his health state.
Any individual involved in any testing of SCP-XXXX must be revised, supervisioned and moved to a Foundation facility far from SCP-XXXX's containment cell.
