Item #: SCP-5093 - The Lunar Ledger
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: The object is to be kept in an airtight concrete room measuring 40 meters in each dimension; the room features a reinforced steel door (0.9m X 0.1m X 2m) requiring a swipe card from appropriate foundation staff to open, fluorescent light fixtures along the ceiling which must be kept on at all times, and four CCTV cameras installed in each corner along the ceiling fixated on the object. In the center of the room is a small pedestal (0.45m X 0.45m X 1m) made of a carbon polymer capable of withstanding temperatures up to 3823 Kelvin, the object is placed atop of this pillar.
Outside the main containment room is an office space with room for four persons to occupy comfortably, the office features a large television that is wired to the CCTV cameras allowing the continuous observation of the object if deemed necessary. The office also includes a small work desk, two office chairs, a microphone connected to the central PA system which also allows for one way communication to the inside of the containment room, and a remote access panel that allows staff to open and close the door the containment room without needing to be physically close the door itself.
When no test(s) involving the anomaly are being conducted, two D-class personnel are instructed to clean the containment room after the monthly phenomena has subsided: otherwise the room is inspected every 6 months for any damages sustained by the cameras or light fixtures. A single security personnel is assigned to check on the object at 0800 hrs and 2000 hrs each day, and is to report to senior staff only if a phenomena occurs that is unusual for this object.
Description: The object is a hardcover book of unknown origin weighing exactly 1.27kg, with a height 28cm and width of 20cm.The pages of the book are beige in colour and have a smooth texture similar to wood pulp paper one would find in a standard sketchbook. The hardback cover appears to be made of leather, and is featureless besides a small rectangle on the front of the book that displays an image of the moon in its current lunar phase.
The image of the moon is animated, subject(s) who view the image can see stars twinkling in the background of the image; the moon is displayed with such detail that it is indistinguishable from looking up at the moon while it is present in the night sky. The book does not appear to have a definite colour, and will appear to be a different colour to any subject who views it. Any attempt to open the ledger results in it opening to the centermost spread, bisecting the two halves of the book equally. No exertion of physical force can be used to turn the page, when the object is turned upside down the pages remain unaffected: object can only be opened or closed.
When open, the two pages display the previous and upcoming lunar phase on the leftmost page and rightmost page respectfully. The images appear to have been sketched with black ink, the level of detail is photorealistic. Attempts to alter the images displayed with traditional art media or otherwise will result in the book closing itself instantaneously, the book will stay shut for twenty four hours after an attempt was made to alter the images, and will shut for an additional twenty hours for each successive attempt at alteration. However this defensive mechanism resets when the moon has fully transitioned to its next lunar phase, the cause of the defensive mechanism is unknown at present.
The book will exhibit specific phenomena during the duration full moon of each month, the events can cause a myriad of changes to the book and any objects that come into physical contact with it.
January: The book will emit a loud howling at 90 decibels similar to the animal Canis lupus, this howling can be stopped before the lunar phase ends by opening the book.
February: The book will cause an area of inclement weather within a 3 meter radius of the object. Subject(s) that make eye contact with the object during this weather event will instantly perspire until they are completely saturated.
March: Small creatures resembling the creature Lumbricus terrestris will spontaneously slither out from under the cover of the object (instances of these creatures are designated as SCP-5093-1). The creatures, oid removed will immediately begin to disintegrate, it has been observed that approximately 50 instances of SCP-5093-1 can exist at any given time during this event. The creatures are harmless and display no anomalous properties otherwise.
April: The moon on the cover will change to a pastel pink colour and emit an odor reminiscent of the chemical methyl cinnamate, used in various products to imitate the flavour of Fragaria × ananassa. No further anomalies appear to occur alongside this event.
May: During this event, various flora of unknown origin will sprout from the book, the flora generated by the book range in colours from blue, yellow, and pink. Flora harvested from the book appear to have bizarre properties.
June: The image of the moon will turn an intense orange colour, as if it was a metallic object heated at immense temperatures. The temperature that is emitted does not register on thermal imaging software, and no adverse effects upon the object or its surroundings. Subject(s) who come in contact with the book will feel a pleasant and soothing warmth as if it emanates from within themselves, they will be compelled to keep the book on their person as long as they can.
July: Discovery of this phenomenon was observed during which a subject who had formed a dependence to the June phenomenon was the focal point of an additional test due to the seemingly similar nature of the anomalous behavior exhibited by the object. The image of the moon will turn an intense orange colour, similar to the June event.
August: Whenever the book is opened over the duration of this event, a species of aquatic domain native to earth emerges from the book in a live state, however the entity eventually ceases living as the containment room is not underwater. Further testing of this is deemed prohibited after an incident involving Balaenoptera musculus.
September/October: This phenomenon is classified as the same entity as both phenomena appear to display the same anomalous properties. During this event, the moon on the cover will turn a pale orange, and the sound of a howling wind will be ever present yet quiet. During this time, any and all organisms within a 5 meter radius of the book will convert to a “mature” state, however this effect only seems to affect the “seeds” of organisms. During a test, a packet of Daucus carota subsp. Sativus seeds (purchased from a local grocer) were thrown into the radius of the anomaly, within five minutes, the package erupted as the seeds within the package rapidly grew into mature Daucus carota subsp. sativus, the objects had no anomalous properties otherwise, and were deemed safe for consumption. (Instance designated SCP-5093-4). SCP-5093-4 neutralised by the research team during lunch hours.
November: The object becomes cool and damp to the touch, subject(s) that come in physical contact with the book will softly weep. Subjects describe memories flashing before them that evoke pain and sadness, however when asked to recall what they saw they were unable to describe them.
December: Subject(s) that come in contact with the book will slowly begin to freeze at the molecular level, the process appears to take 30 minutes regardless of the size of the object, the process is irreversible and cannot be stopped.
Test Log 5093-01: 05/10/2017. Test concerning the properties of flora. A singular D-class personnel was ordered to enter the containment area and ingest the petals of a flower that sprouted from the book. Upon consumption, the D-class personnel began to hallucinate, hearing voices, over the next hour, the D-class personnel had completely morphed into a large shrub, which itself began to sprout small berry-like entities. The shrub was appropriately contained and is now classified as SCP-5093-2. Further testing of this phenomenon has been deemed unnecessary.
Test Log 5093-02: 06/09/2017 - 07/15/2017. Test concerning warmth anomaly. Repeated exposure to this phenomenon by singular D-class personnel. Subject formed a psychological dependence on the warming phenomenon. Once this dependence had been formed, it took a considerable amount of time to break the dependence, the subject displayed a number of withdrawal symptoms over a month-long period of time after the end of the event. Symptoms include tremors, insomnia, and depression, however none of the withdrawal symptoms appeared to be permanent or life threatening. Complete results of the study period were deemed inconclusive due to a testing incident during the July event, see Test Log 5093-03.
Test Log 5093-03: 07/15/2017. Test involved the same subject as the June test due to the similar nature of phenomena during the June event. When the subject came in contact with the object, they expressed feeling the same warmth as the previous experiment and were determined not to let go of the book. Five minutes afterward, the subject began to describe the warmth as becoming increasingly unbearable and that they were physically unable to let go of the book, no matter how much they wanted to. Over the course of the next hour thermal imaging recorded the subject reaching a temperature of approximately 1773.15 kelvin (1500 celsius), during which the subject was acutely aware, experiencing phenomenal amounts of pain, but the body of the subject was not physically altered by this event until the heat emanating from the book further increased. After this test all that was left of the subject was a pool of hot liquid flesh, afterwards the flesh cooled and solidified, tests confirmed that the chemical makeup of the flesh-like substance was 100% identical to the chemical ferrum. The object remained undamaged. Further testing of this phenomenon was deemed unnecessary.
Test Log 5093-04: 08/08/2017. Test concerning the object during an August event. A singular D-class personnel was instructed to interact with the object, after sustained physical contact of ten minutes the test subject was instructed to open the book. A singular Balaenoptera musculus instantly emerged from the contents of the book, (Lifeform now designated SCP-5093-3) crushed test subject under the immense weight of its body. Further tests during the duration of this event is prohibited due to difficulties involved with cleaning the containment area.
Test Log 5093-05: 12/04/2017. Test concerning the object during the December event. A singular D-class personnel was instructed to interact with the object. Upon making physical contact the subject began to freeze solid over the next thirty minutes. When the subject was completely frozen, testing showed that the subject (now designated SCP-5093-4) had a core temperature of 0 degrees kelvin. Further testing deemed unnecessary. SCP-5093-4 terminated appropriately.
Addendum 5093-01: 10/02/2018. Female researchers who [REDACTED] are PROHIBITED from interacting with the object during months of September and October. No exceptions.
