Special Containment Procedures: As of the time of writing, SCP-4238 is currently being kept in a modified anomalous object storage unit at Site-██. Access to the unit is only available to personnel with level 3 clearance or above. SCP-4238 is to be plugged in at all times and its setting dial set to 1 or 2. Given SCP-4238's anomalous properties more personalized containment procedures are being drafted and awaiting approval. For the current pending containment procedures see addendum 4238-1

Description: SCP-4238 is an electric oil heater, bearing only slight differences from other heaters of similar make. Instead of two separate dials for temperature and setting SCP-4238 possess a singular setting dial labeled from zero to five, settings from "very low" to "very high"(zero is labeled "off"). SCP-4238 came to Foundation attention after the items discovery in the town of ████, Vermont, after a sudden house fire described by witnesses as "instantaneous" and "all at once". For more details on recovery see addendum 4238-2

SCP-4238's anomalous properties will activate whether or not the object is powered. When the object is not supplied with power ie unplugged or set to zero, SCP-4238 will begin to lower the temperature of the area it is currently in at a rate of one degree Fahrenheit every three seconds. There is currently no known limit to how low SCP-4238 and lower the temperature, but it has been found to be capable of completely freezing its surroundings and itself, in ice. When the object is powered the setting dial can be moved to one of the five other settings. When this is done SCP-4238 will raise (or in the case of setting one, lower) the temperature to a preset degree. Below is a collection of the different temperature ranges each setting produces.

1. very low: 32 degrees Fahrenheit
2. low: 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit
3. medium: 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit
4. high: 100-150 degrees Fahrenheit
5. very high: [DATA EXPUNGED]

This temperature change will happen regardless of other other temperature altering devices in use at the time, and will spread to any open areas adjacent to the room SCP-4238 is in.

Current pending containment procedures

SCP-4238 is to kept in a standard containment chamber. The chamber is to be fitted with an airlock door and the walls, floor and ceiling are to be coated with silicone rubber with the exception of a single electrical wall socket. Any and all ventilation and plumbing that lead through or around the chamber are to redirected. SCP-4238 is to be plugged in at all times with its setting dial set to one or two.

Recovery

After initial discovery of SCP-4238, a Foundation agent placed in local law enforcement was sent in to retrieve and transport the object to Site-██. Approximately 6 hours after initial recovery the transport vehicle carrying SCP-4238 was reported going off the road and crashing into nearby woods. Agents dispatched to investigate found the driver and passenger dead form carbon monoxide poisoning, along with the vehicles tailpipe blocked by a large piece of ice. Upon opening the vehicle SCP-4238 was found completely frozen in ice, with the exception of the power cord which was sticking out enough to be plugged in. Removal of the object was deemed to difficult at the time and the vehicle along with SCP-4238 was airlifted to Site-██.

A hand written note was found taped to the back of SCP-4238. All attempts of removing the note have been unsuccessful.
