Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX has so far proved impossible to reliably prevent or predict, and therefore containment is to focus on identification and amnesticization of individuals affected by the event, hereby designated SCP-XXXX-4. Foundation teams are to be stationed in SCP-XXXX-1 and SXP-XXXX-3 at all times in order to detain SCP-XXXX-4 instances pending identification. Due to SCP-XXXX-1's anomalous temporal properties, teams stationed within must rotate out each sunset and sunrise at the designated entry point in Site-██. Once identified, SCP-XXXX-4 instances are to be returned to their locations prior to SCP-XXXX and administered Class C amnestics. Due to the rarity of individuals experiencing SCP-XXXX more than once and the fact that SCP-XXXX-4 instances exhibit no anomalous effects, SCP-XXXX-4 instances do not need to be monitored after amnesticization.

A Foundation team is to enter SCP-XXXX-2 each day immediately after sunrise and exit before sunset on the same day. While in SCP-XXXX-2, they are to follow the same procedures as the teams in SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-3. Tracking devices are to be placed in no fewer than three (3) buildings in SCP-XXXX-2 (excluding SCP-XXXX-2b) and checked daily to ensure proper functioning. Between sunset and sunrise, SCP-XXXX-2 is to be monitored at all times by at least one Foundation satellite with high-resolution thermal imaging capabilities in order to detect entry via SCP-XXXX-2a. Due to the mobile nature of SCP-XXXX-2, satellites must determine the proper location to observe via the tracking devices. If an instance of SCP-XXXX-4 is detected entering SCP-XXXX-2 during this time, a containment team is to be dispatched to remove it, prior to the identification, relocation, and amnesticization described above.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous event that may occur with an unknown low frequency if a certain set of criteria are met. When it occurs, SCP-XXXX enables SCP-XXXX-4 instances to access one of three anomalous locations, designated SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-2, and SCP-XXXX-3. SCP-XXXX may affect any individual given the following circumstances:

  1. The individual must be in an altered mental state colloquially known as "highway hypnosis" or "white line fever," in which it is engaged in movement from one location to another without being aware of its actions or being able to recall them later on.
  2. The individual must lack a clear sense of a destination, either because it is in unfamiliar territory with no knowledge of how to reach a given destination or because it does not care about its eventual destination.
  3. If indoors, the individual must be in a bookstore, library, or other area containing large amounts of books and bookshelves.
  4. If traveling in a group, all individuals in the group must fulfill the above criteria for SCP-XXXX to have a chance of occurring. This appears to only apply to humans involved; animals are hypothesized to be incapable of experiencing SCP-XXXX except when being transported by or when traveling with one or more humans, and their mental state does not appear to have any impact on whether or not SCP-XXXX occurs. If traveling in a vehicle, individuals not engaged in driving or navigating may experience SCP-XXXX despite not being in the altered mental state described in criterion 1, as long as their attention is occupied by something other than the surroundings.

Depending on the surroundings of individuals when SCP-XXXX occurs, individuals may be transported to either SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-2, or SCP-XXXX-3.

Special Access Requirements: SCP-XXXX must occur to SCP-XXXX-4 instances that are traveling on foot and outdoors.

Entrance Description: SCP-XXXX will result in SCP-XXXX-4 instances disappearing from this world and appearing on a pathway, designated SCP-XXXX-1a. This pathway will appear consistent with SCP-XXXX-4's surroundings prior to SCP-XXXX at first, but as SCP-XXXX-4 continues along, SCP-XXXX-1a will gradually change to a well-worn dirt path surrounded by a thickly wooded region. The exact length of SCP-XXXX-1a is variable, and depends on the time and location of SCP-XXXX, as well as the walking speed of SCP-XXXX-4. The sun will advance normally in SCP-XXXX-1a until sunrise or sunset, whichever is closest. When the sun is just below the horizon, it will cease to move, maintaining its position in the sky regardless of how much time elapses. SCP-XXXX-1a is always long enough that SCP-XXXX-4 will not reach SCP-XXXX-1 before sunrise or sunset, and appears to shorten as time progresses. Once the sun has stopped, SCP-XXXX-1a will be approximately three hundred meters (300 m) in length or shorter. Attempting to travel along SCP-XXXX-1a in the opposite direction still result in the path gradually becoming more worn and the surroundings shifting to be more forested, and will result in arrival at SCP-XXXX-1. If an instance of SCP-XXXX-4 attempts to leave the path, it will come upon another path shortly after leaving visible range of the first one; paths encountered in this manner appear and behave identically to the first one. No animal life of any sort is present in SCP-XXXX-1a, including insect life.

If SCP-XXXX-4's initial surroundings were urban or suburban, SCP-XXXX-1a will initially contain numerous structures around the central path of similar design to those surrounding SCP-XXXX-4 at the time of SCP-XXXX. All doors and windows of these structures will be closed but unlocked. Structures are fully furnished, with residential buildings including numerous items of clothing, food, and toiletries; however, structures show no sign of occupation except for these items. Despite the presence of numerous electronic items and devices such as sinks, bathtubs, and toilets, structures within SCP-XXXX-1a have no sources of electricity or water. Trace DNA and fingerprints are entirely absent. No structure has ever contained an image, photographic or painted, of any human or animal, but numerous paintings and photographs of landscapes and buildings have been observed. Buildings are always pictured with all lights off and no sign of habitation, like the structures in SCP-XXXX-1a.

SCP-XXXX-4 instances in SCP-XXXX-1 may exit via SCP-XXXX-1a. When accessed via SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-1a will have a length ranging from approximately one to ten kilometers (1-10 km). If SCP-XXXX occurs while SCP-XXXX-4 is traveling on SCP-XXXX-1a, it will be transported back to Earth, appearing on any dirt path in a wooded area at random. Regardless of time spent in SCP-XXXX-1a and SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-4 instances will always reappear at the next sunrise or sunset in their exit location after their initial SCP-XXXX events.

Interior Description: SCP-XXXX-1 is a thickly wooded area with multiple large clearings connected by dirt paths. It is not located anywhere on Earth's surface and does not have a consistent north. The sky always appears as if the sun is just below the horizon. Similarly to SCP-XXXX-1a, no animals of any kind, including insects, are present in SCP-XXXX-1, excluding SCP-XXXX-4 instances. The weather is always overcast, although precipitation never occurs, and the temperature ranges at random from approximately 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. While in SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX-4 instances do not require or feel any need for food, water, sleep, or oxygen. It is also hypothesized that they do not age.
