Oof |
moklin |
nice |
moklin |
okay, so i've got an idea. An abandoned Foundation site, Site-84, that's been invaded by an anomalous species that's put all of the people into cells because the species is pro-foundation but doesn't realize that the foundation's staffed by people |
moklin |
and they're actually pretty good scientists so the foundation keeps them around |
moklin |
sound good? |
DarkStuff |
Wait wait wait |
DarkStuff |
So |
DarkStuff |
A species invades a site, contains all the humans thinking they are anomalies, but then functions like a normal site |
moklin |
like obviously the foundation takes the scientists back at some point because the "SCP" has to be transferred |
moklin |
yes, they take over the people functions |
DarkStuff |
I love that image |
DarkStuff |
Base concept gets an A+ from me |
moklin |
sweet |
moklin |
time to go and fukin r u i n it |
DarkStuff |
I can see some good imagery coming from that, some decent creep as well (in regards to how the species is similar and different, and how they treat humans), and above all some great addendums detailing interactions |
DarkStuff |
"Where'd you come from?" |
DarkStuff |
"New York." |
DarkStuff |
*is a big tentacled bug thing* |
DarkStuff |
"Like, the sewers?" |
DarkStuff |
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean" |
DarkStuff |
"Riiight…" |
moklin |
*is a big tentacled bug thing* - oh i thought you were implying the alien bug horrors are doing a fukin interview log with the people |
DarkStuff |
Pffft, yeah that too |
DarkStuff |
Basically all of that sounds fun and funny and creepy |
DarkStuff |
A really really good mix |
DarkStuff |
Oh yeah! You can have details on how THEY detail the "SCP" that is people |
|
moklin starts to vibrate excitedly |
DarkStuff |
Dude, I really like this |
DarkStuff |
What's the implication? If there is any, at all |
DarkStuff |
Like, about how they came into being |
moklin |
that means it's probably been done before lol |
DarkStuff |
And why they think they are what they are |
moklin |
no implications yet, but i'll try to hash some out |
DarkStuff |
Honestly, you don't have to |
DarkStuff |
If the other story elements are solid and intriguingly weird, you can have there be not a single hint as to their origin |
DarkStuff |
Though I imagine interactions with them would just sort of inadvertently reveal things, so yeah, I'd give it some thought |
moklin |
oh yeah the foundation asks them where they came from and they just say something like "Korthak" like that's the city they were born in |
moklin |
cause they think the foundation are made up of them |
DarkStuff |
I might like it more if they said some weirdly normal things |
DarkStuff |
And you trick the reader into thinking "oh they think they're people" or like "they come from an alternate reality where the only difference is that they're the people" |
DarkStuff |
And somewhere like 3/4 into the interview have it take a hard left turn into absurd |
moklin |
y e s |
moklin |
i like this |
DarkStuff |
"Where were you born?" |
DarkStuff |
"New York." |
moklin |
this is why you have an author page lol |
DarkStuff |
"What was your job before this?" |
DarkStuff |
"Oh I got a degree in law, actually." |
DarkStuff |
"Where did you go to get your degree?" |
DarkStuff |
"[insert normal law school here]" |
DarkStuff |
"What was your normal after school activity" |
DarkStuff |
"Oh yeah I'd usually go have a coffee and then feed my rinds to the cephalamother |
DarkStuff |
" |
moklin |
.g coffee rinds |

And the interviewers would just have to go along with it |
moklin |
shit gtg |
moklin |
hey, hippo? could you do me a favor and re-read my draft about slugs and tell me if it reminds you of anything? |
Hippo |
ok |

moklin |
sorry, don't know why i didn't think to pull it up in advance |
Balthazaar |
hi |
moklin |
hey Balthazaar |
Hippo |
moklin: I'm not sure if it reminds me of anything (outside of that douglas adams joke about the lab-rats that are actually secretly scientists observing *us*) |
moklin |
okay, because i was wondering if it was too similar to !scp-1171 and i didn't want to throw it out without running it by a couple of people |

Hippo |
the premise seems intriguing, although the documentation of humans as anomalies prolly needs some more setup to work, i think — also the chat-bot anomaly thing seems a bit contrived; why not just have the foundation communicate with the slugs by email and ask them questions, all while pretending to also be slugs |
moklin |
because why would slugs ask other slugs what slugs do and want |
moklin |
it seems a bit "hello fellow human" to me |
Hippo |
IDK but that seems like it would result in some pretty entertaining discussions |
Hippo |
Right but |
Hippo |
the fun part (to me anyway) is that it isn't "Hello fellow human" |
Hippo |
It's "hello fellow slug" |
Hippo |
which is an inversion of the trope (albeit slight) |
Hippo |
like IDK I might be wrong but it seems kind of funny to imagine the Foundation having to pretend to be slugs |
Hippo |
and even negotiate for the humans contained there to be 'transferred' to another site |
moklin |
what i was trying to do, and what i thought was going to be funnier - was the fact that trained, PhD level 50-something psychologists have to act like 18 year-old-girl-chatbots to figure shit out |
Hippo |
I mean that could work too, it just seems unrelated to the core anomaly |
Hippo |
like you could write an entirely different article with that as the premise |
moklin |
and yes, that's going to be a part of it, just haven't gotten around to it yet |
Hippo |
those are two parts that are just completely disconnected from one another |
Hippo |
"slugs pretending to be foundation" — "foundation psychologists pretending to be an anomalous 18 year old chatbot" |
Hippo |
I mean they're both *fun* ideas |
moklin |
okay, yeah i see your point there |
moklin |
i'll rework it asap |
moklin |
but i feel it might just end up being too close to 1171 |
Hippo |
IDK 1171 is — I mean the anomaly in 1171 doesn't think it's Foundation, and it hates humans |
Hippo |
in this case the anomaly thinks it's foundation, and just wants to study humans |
Hippo |
because it thinks they're anomalous |
Hippo |
there's something fun (I think?) about the Foundation having to play another version of itself |
Hippo |
and figure out how to out-think themselves (knowing what they know about the Foundation) — and what if the slugs turn out to be way better at this than they expect |
Hippo |
or if you want to really make it ddistinct from 1171 |
moklin |
another direction i could take it (just thought of this) is that the slugs don't think people are anomalous - they just think that the scientists are D-Class, and use them as such. |
Hippo |
have like the person communicating with the slugs initially just trying to fool one of them, but then becomes impressed with some of the slug's containment procedures/ways of dealing with an anomaly on the site |
Hippo |
and starts to realize 'wow these slugs are actually *really* good at this uh' |
Hippo |
'maybe we should actually let them do their thing' |
Hippo |
or anything in that direction really |
Hippo |
I think having the slugs think the scientists are D-Class opens up a few different questions which I'm not sure how you'd address — but that oculd be a fun angle too, depending on how/where you go withit |
moklin |
what questions? |
Hippo |
like why do the slugs think the scientists are D-class? do they think any human is D-Class, and slugs (like them) aren't? in real!Foundation the only way we can tell D-Class from Foundation personnel is by clothing/our files on them |
Hippo |
so is there no such thing as a D-Class 'slug'? |
Hippo |
etc |
