Item #: SCP-3734
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3734 is to be kept in a combination safe in a fully lit room (no shade anywhere). It is kept in testing lab <information redacted> until further notice, only to be taken for testing with permission from clearance level 4 or higher.
Description: SCP-3734 is a 25cm x 6cm x 6cm oil lantern with a cast iron ring at the top for carrying it. The oil lantern is completely normal until it is lit in a room with any shade in it. The lantern turns the shadows into the spectators nightmares. It is unknown where the lantern originated from but there is a possibility that it is from 1200s era Italy. SCP-3734 is, under certain conditions, very dangerous and should be handled with extreme caution.
SCP-3734 has further testing to understand the properties that it has. Class D personnel are to be the only ones used during testing since testing can be hazardous to the participant. Testing shall be handled by Dr. Mp and his research team and, only under given permission, tested under another research team while Dr. Mp is present. The cast iron lantern never has been filled with oil as it seems to never run out. The lantern has had testing where the shadows in the testing chamber have come out as comforting and pleasant, but the test subjects still undertook the same amount of mental trauma as the ones who had the evil entities show themselves. The physical lacerations from the evil entities only last as long as the lantern is lit, as soon as the lantern is blown out and the lights are turned on the physical damage done is completely healed. The mental scarring though has been seen through many MRI scans.
Many of the test subjects (after testing) have had their nightmares worsened, some to the extent of the test subject becoming suicidal and/or severely depressed. The test subjects that have the friendly entities show themselves are often left with lasting hallucinations and "imaginary friends" that stay for months and sometimes never go away, the test subjects then go into a state of mental instability and are often pronounced clinically insane and terminated.
SCP-3734 research test 001: 10/08/1997 D-2984 is placed into the test chamber, very compliant, under camera view and monitored as he lights the lantern. After ten minutes he sits in the chair provided and is viewed as physically bored. seventeen minutes and fourty-three seconds into the test he starts to seem uneasy, when asked he said that he thought he saw something moving in the chamber with him. twenty-two minutes and sixteen seconds into the test he is yelling to let him out and that there are things tearing at his legs and ankles, he is told to calm down or he will be terminated. twenty-five minutes and twenty-three seconds in he screams in agony and the research team decides to terminate the test, he is instructed to blow out the the lantern and then the research team would turn on the chambers lights. After being taken out of the chamber further examination showed the bottom of his pants were town by what look like rats teeth and the legs are blood stained. In the chamber there is nothing physical in the chamber besides the pool of blood from D-2984. The on site psychiatrist did further mental examination and D-2984 was pronounced to be fit and sent to a monitored cell where cameras caught him bashing his head against the wall until he died from trauma to the cranium. Further testing to be done.
SCP-3734 research test 027: 01/22/2005 D-2355 is placed into the chamber while being monitored by Dr. Mp and his friend he called in for assistance Dr. Jack. Dr. Mp's team was asked to be away for this testing phase as Dr. Mp and Dr. Jack wanted to do a new testing procedure. Dr. Mp sat back and wanted to see how Dr. Jack would handle the situation. Dr. Jack asked D-2355 to enter the testing chamber and light the lantern. At first D-2355 refused until Dr. Jack told him that this test shouldn't hurt him if he keeps a positive mindset. D-2355 hesitated before entering the test chamber and lighting the lamp. six minutes and forty-five seconds in the test D-2355 sat in the chair and seem to be agitated by something. When asked he said it was nothing just his mind playing tricks on him. fourteen minutes and seven seconds in D-2355 started screaming that something was in the corner staring at him, cameras caught nothing in the chamber and told him to calm down. D-2355 was physically agitated until Dr. Mp stepped forward and told D-2355 to go and try to touch it. D-2355 outright refused and said he knows he sees something in the corner. fifteen minutes and twelve seconds in the thing in the corner then started mauling D-2355 and ripped his throat open and cracked his rib cage. Dr. Jack immediately turned the chambers lights on, but was too late D-2355 had lost too much blood and was on the verge of death. An NTF officer entered the chamber under Dr. Mp's orders and terminated D-2355.
SCP-3734 research test 041: 11/09/2009 It is to be noted that Dr. Jack and Dr. Mp have fully taken the researching of SCP-3734 as their priority and dispatched all but two of their research team. D-7451 is asked to enter the testing chamber and refuses to enter. After NTF threatened him he entered very cautiously. After closing the chamber door he listened to Dr. Mp's instructions to light the lamp and wait. D-7451 then walks over and lights the lantern then sits on the floor in the corner bringing the lantern close and sitting it on the floor. Dr. Mp told D-7451 to put the lantern back until Dr. Jack told him to keep the lantern by him. Dr. Jack then explained to Dr. Mp that he wanted to see what happened. Dr. Mp reluctantly agreed to see what happened and then viewed the monitors. D-7451 sat still and seemed to be peaceful until he jerked suddenly, when asked he said he thought he felt a small hand on his shoulder but it was nothing. seventeen minutes and fifty-two seconds in and all of a sudden D-7451 shoots up in the air and presses himself in the corner, when asked what was wrong he responded with, "My daughter is standing in the other corner but she died.". Perplexed we didn't give him instructions and just sat and watched what happened. After twenty minutes D-7451 relaxed and started to cry, he then crouched down and held his arms out. He then seemed to hug the air and when asked what he was doing he said hugging his daughter. We then told him to blow the lantern out and turned the chambers lights on. We then took him to the on site psychiatrist and had him mentally evaluated and then monitored. D-7451 was reported as mentally unstable and sent to a cell. D-7451 asked for children's books and a nightlight. Dr. Mp provided what he asked for and then monitored D-7451 for the next two weeks. D-7451 exhibited that he was caring for something and reading to it, we presumed it to be his daughter. After two weeks we sent him to his normal cell, he then asked if he could keep the children's books and the nightlight so he could read to his daughter. We allowed this as an ongoing experiment. -more to be added-
SCP-3734 research test 072: 07/05/2017 D-1008 was asked to enter the chamber and light the lantern. She didn't resist and lit the lantern and then was told to take the lantern and get comfy. D-1008 sat in the center of the room and seemed agitated. Dr. Mp told her to relax and everything would be fine, which seemed to coax her into calming down. Twelve minutes and fifty-nine seconds in she said that she saw something moving around the edge of the chamber. Dr. Jack told her to stay calm and it was probably nothing. Thirteen minutes and thirty-seven seconds into the test and D-1008 then started yelling and dived towards something. When asked what she was doing she said that her dog "Roman" had been in the chamber with her. Dr. Mp terminated the test early and closed testing on SCP-3734 until further notice. D-1008 was taken to the on site psychiatrist and was pronounced clinically insane and was then terminated.
Dr. Mp's Notes: SCP-3734 seemed to be linked to emotional state and past trauma experiences. Those who were attacked by the shadows were often ones with more malicious personalities and the more peaceful and carefree ones were greeted with more pleasant things. D-7451 seemed to be a personal success because he was mentally there and functioning but hallucinated that his daughter was with him. I am closing this file until further notice as to collect my notes and sort them into files along with trying to link more of the things that happened with the test subjects personalities, pasts, and mental health.
