Highly Dangerous Batteries

Item #: SCP-4508

Object Class: Oppenheimer

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4508-1, SCP-4508-2, SCP-4508-3, and SCP-4508-4 are each to be placed within a standard single-battery AA flashlight that is to be kept on at all times. Appropriate covers for the flashlight are to be kept over the light opening unless in use. Location of the flashlights is irrelevant, so long as said flashlights are in possession or whereabouts of personnel with Level 3 Clearance of higher. All instances of SCP-4508 are never to be within 30 meters of each other for a duration of more than 5 minutes, and are never to be kept within the same device for use of powering said device. For more information regarding safety protocols and reasons applicable, see Addendum 4508-A. If a flashlight is misplaced, any personnel with Level 3 Clearance or higher can access it's location through the nearest monitor. All flashlights are to be fitted with a GPS tracking device and bulb-life monitor. Should the GPS tracker or light bulb become removed, damaged, or dysfunctional at any time, replacement should occur at the soonest convenience. Should the flashlight be misplaced during a time of GPS inactivity, a sweep search of all facility grounds will be conducted. If a flashlight is unable to be found within an hour, or is found without a battery, all necessary protocols should be immediately enacted to recover the lost battery. If protocols fail to recover the battery within 72 hours, immediate worldwide surveillance of all thermal activities will commence. If a discovered battery has reached the Oppenheimer Limit1, Protocol Coldsilver will be enacted immediately, upon which MTF-Gamma-2 will be readied for recovery. If such recovery fails, is unable to proceed, or a battery exceeds the Oppenheimer Limit, the use of SCP countermeasures will be enforced by the O5-Council only.

SCP-4508-5 is to be kept within the [REDACTED] at research site-5. There is to be a memetic kill agent operating at the output of [REDACTED] at all times, with an alarm wired to active in the event of the deactivation of the memetic kill agent. In such an event, all power from [REDACTED] is to be cut to research site-5 via any analog kill switch located around the facility, followed by the immediate use of backup nuclear power. SCP-4508-5 is then to be placed within any non-locomotive device suitable for a AA battery. Once the memetic kill agent is reestablished, SCP-4508-5 will be placed back inside the [REDACTED], given it has had clearance from any of the psychologist researchers that SCP-4508-5 is stable. The [REDACTED] is also to always be connected to a computer or gaming device of any sort chosen by SCP-4508-5. However, said device is to never be plugged into any power source, and will be able to power itself through connection to SCP-4508-5. The device connected to SCP-4508-5 is never to be given access to any form of internet connection. If any personnel wish to interact, speak, or play games with SCP-4508-5, they may do so through headphones connected to the device SCP-4508-5 is currently connected to, and will be granted a controlled compatible with the device if they wish to play games with SCP-4508-5. Reports on strange or notable behavior or comments made by SCP-4508-5 should be recorded immediately following disconnection with the device. No internet capable electronics are to be brought within the room containing SCP-4508-5. Should SCP-4508-5 go missing, the same protocols for all other batteries in SCP-4508 will be followed.

Description: SCP-4508 refers to all batteries from a pack of 8 AA batteries with an unidentified brand recovered in ███████, Illinois, on █/██/20██. The site of recovery was found after several noise complaints of "high pitched grinding" and screams were reported in the area. The noise was traced to bad to an abandoned steel mill in the outskirts of the town. Agents at the site quickly discovered that the area had been repurposed as a ritual site for the Church of the Broken God, although no suspects could be found on site, a search of the local area is currently ongoing. Upon entering the rolling mill, Agent ██████ found a large mechanism, now know as SCP-4509, covered beneath a tarp on the second floor. Beside SCP-4509 was a table with 6 of the 8 presumed batteries inside an unidentified package fit for all 8. Investigation into the whereabouts of the other 2 batteries is currently ongoing. Upon initial interaction, no anomalous properties were detected; however, Agent █████ noted that the batteries felt exceptionally warm to the touch. The batteries were transferred into a plastic containment bag, and transported back to research site-5. Researched Dr ██████ also noted that the batteries were very warm once they arrived at research site-5, and during transportation into research lab A-980, the batteries melted through the bag on fell onto the floor. At this point, Dr ███████ attempted to pick up the batteries, resulting in incident 4508-A. The batteries were retrieved with reinforced steel tongs, and placed into heat resistant blank output units. Upon placement into these units, all batteries of SCP-4508 began to cool down until a normal temperature was achieved.

Testing revealed that instances of SCP-4508 cease to continually heat if placed within any device that is currently active. If the device is inactive, normal heating of SCP-4508 instances will occur. Instances of SCP-4508 seem to have no clear capacity of wattage, capable of powering at least to 10 Gigawatts without any issue. See Addendum 4508-B for further details on battery usage. Testing has also revealed that there is no limit to the heat gain nor thermal output of an instance of SCP-4508 when left outside a device, or while a device is not active. The thermal output of SCP-4508 instances will affect all objects surrounding it, and the effective radius of the given heat will vary proportionally with the thermal output. However, SCP-4508 instances will not melt or damage the device currently containing them, but will damage devices not currently containing the instance. The heat gain of SCP-4508 instances is exponential, increasing its temperature by a factor of 1.06 every hour. However, cooling of the batteries occurs near instantly once placed inside any powered device, and temperatures have been recorded to drop from 120oC to 20oC in .006ms.

The secondary anomalous quality of these batteries are there apparent sentience that is gained when placing them inside of battery pack that powers any sort of device capable of displaying advanced forms of communication. While it has bee noted that when put in simpler devices, such as flashlights, the device will turn on and off at will, such example are few, theorized that whatever sentience these batteries have does not know morse code. It is unclear how SCP-4508 instances gained sentience, it is thought that it may have to due with SCP-4509, given that every instance seems to be capable of speaking English, and have regional patterns from the location where they were recovered. The SCP-4508 instances also appear to be incapable of comprehending time, and completely lack any memory of prior conversation. However, this can be subverted if information from an encounter is stored on a hard drive that is connected to the current device an instance is powering, and the instance will be able to recall in perfect detail that last conversation it had. This has allowed agents and doctors conversing with an instance to gain trust an deduce more about what lead to their creation. See Addendum 4508-C for more information.
