Item #: SCP-XXXX-T
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:
Author's note: SCP-XXXX is a memetic hazard, and thus cannot be "contained" per se.
The Special Containment Procedures detailed herein apply to written records of SCP-XXXX (designated as SCP-XXXX-T). Reference should be made to SCP-XXXX-A for containment procedures pertinent to audio records.
SCP-XXXX-T is to be secured in a stainless steel lock-box with dimensions of 23 cm x 32 cm x 5 cm, locked with an in-built combination lock requiring not less than 6 digits to release.
If SCP-XXXX-T has not been accessed since the last change, the combination is to be changed at minimum frequency of every seven days. If the document is removed from the lock-box for research purposes, the combination must be reset at the end of every research session or every 12 hours from the box's opening, whichever comes first.
New combinations will be generated using a random number sequencer by a Class B personnel with Level 4 security clearance or above.
Whilst outside of the box, SCP-XXXX-T is only to be examined through an overlay that allows a maximum of 15 cm x 1 cm of text to be observed at any one time.
The document should, wherever possible, be kept in the lock-box described. However, if the document requires handling whilst outside of its container and uncovered by the above-mentioned overlay, only functionally blind or illiterate, non-German speaking personnel are to be used.
SCP-XXXX-T may be examined only by research personnel with no prior experience of, or knowledge regarding, the following subject areas:
- Advanced mathematics
- Theoretical physics
- Astrophysics
- Metaphysics
And limited1 prior experience of, or knowledge regarding, the following subject areas:
- Theology
- Philosophy
- Cosmology
No researcher is to be exposed to more than 3 full sentences in any one sitting, and are to be treated with a Class B amnestic immediately following the recording of their findings. The researcher is to be reassigned for a period not less than 30 days before subsequent exposure to the document.
There are currently ██ known instances of SCP-XXXX-T, consisting of SCP-XXXX-T0 (designated "the Original"), and ██ copies. ██ instances are secured in storage facilities for safe keeping with the remainder being held at a research facilities for examination. The knowledge that there are multiple instances of SCP-XXXX-T is restricted to Level 4 personnel and above. If any personnel with a clearance less than Level 4 become aware of the existence of another instance of SCP-XXXX-T, immediate detention and administration of Class B amnestics is mandated.
Description:
SCP-XXXX-T0 consists of █ A4 pages, apparently torn from a notebook of unknown provenance. The text is handwritten in a cursive style and appears to be from the early to mid-20th century, judging by ink composition. The language used is German, with the occasional Latin maxim or epithet. Language style is academic, bordering on esoteric, but according to researchers the information can be readily understood if the subject is given time to consider the information as they read it.
Paraphrasing, summary and translation, as well as less restrictive investigations conducted before the true potential of SCP-XXXX became apparent2, revealed SCP-XXXX to be an explanation of the concept of infinity. More precisely, SCP-XXXX uses mathematical equations (with accompanying interpretation), explanations and philosophical exploration to communicate the concept of infinity in a manner comprehensible to the human mind.
The consequences of reading an instance of SCP-XXXX-T appear to vary by individual. The primary factors appear to be prior experience of, or knowledge regarding, the abovementioned subject areas (subjects with extensive knowledge or experience of the abovementioned subject areas will hereinafter be referred to as having a high level of “primary vulnerability”). The number of secondary factors appears to be extensive; see Addendum XXXX-T1 for a non-exhaustive list. Thus far, subjects who have no knowledge of German, are functionally blind or illiterate, or who are under the influence of Class H amnestics appear unaffected by reading (or attempting to read) an instance of SCP-XXXX-T.
The higher the subject’s primary vulnerability, the more pronounced the effects of reading the document appear to be3. It is hypothesised that this correlation is due, at least in part, to increased comprehension of SCP-XXXX. Consequences of exposure to SCP-XXXX appear to range in scope, with lower-end cases exhibiting markedly increased feelings of apathy, appreciation of one's smallness on a cosmic scale and a paralyzing sense that nothing one does matters. More significant consequences, including physical phenomena external to the affected subject, have resulted from a combination of high primary vulnerability and being exposed to the entirety, or near entirety of SCP-XXXX. These physical phenomena have been documented to include temperature fluctuations, luminal distortions, variations in atmospheric pressure and localised gravitational anomalies.4.
Addendum XXXX-T1: Secondary factors in the degree to which subjects are affected by SCP-XXXX (non-exhaustive)5
- Degree of literacy
- Degree of proficiency in German
- IQ
- Highest level of academic qualification obtained
- Adaptability
- Curiosity
- Open-mindedness
- Introspectiveness
- Rationality
- Patience
- Parent/guardian occupation/vocation
- Highest level of academic qualification obtained by parent/guardian
- Socio-economic strata occupied by family during prepubescence and adolescence
For a full list, including provisional inclusions, please contact Dr. ███████ (Project Lead).
Addendum XXXX-T2: Experiments performed, and results obtained, utilising subjects with varying levels of primary vulnerability.
