Item #: SCP-5248

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: online marketplaces, pawn shops, and used shoe stores are to be monitored to prevent the circulation of SCP-5248-A. Instances of SCP-5248-A are to be contained in Site-21's high-value item storage facility for testing purposes only, kept in separate containment units.

At all times, a subunit of MTF Pi-1 ("City Slickers") is to be stationed at the Alki beach park in Seattle, WA, disguised as groundskeepers, police officers, or lifeguards.

To be eligible for assignment to SCP-5248, personnel must have one of the following traits:

  • Color blindness in one eye
  • Blindness in one eye
  • One missing eye
  • Heterochromia

If this is not possible, temporary assignment may be authorized on the condition that personnel wear an eyepatch while on duty, but this is not preferable due to the relative ease with which SCP-5248-B instances can remove it. Voluntary removal of this eyepatch while on duty is punishable by immediate reassignment.

Assigned personnel are to be trained and equipped to neutralize targets from a distance of greater than 15 meters, both lethally and non-lethally.
Personnel are not permitted to use scopes, binoculars, cameras, or any other means of magnifying the image of their target.

An array of Sonar sensors are to be maintained, capable of detecting entities moving along the floor of the Sound at a distance of no less than 10 km from the shore.

In order to facilitate the reliable collection of SCP-5248-A, SCP-5248 is not to be engaged until it reaches the shore.

Upon confirmation of an SCP-5248 manifestation off the coast, any civilians are to be evacuated from Alki beach under the guise of some kind of waste spill. Boats are to be directed away from the entity. Any boats within a lateral distance of 15 meters of the entity are to be presumed contaminated by SCP-5248-B and boarded by MTF Pi-1 as soon as SCP-5248 demanifests, any SCP-5248-B instances on the surface are incapacitated, and both SCP-5248-A instances are secured.

In order to prevent civilians from making visual contact with SCP-5248, a smoke screen is to be deployed in the immediate area as soon as visual contact is made. Should a civilian witness SCP-5248, they are to be non-lethally capacitated if they had been converted to SCP-5248-B instances, administered Class A amnestics, and released with a cover story that they had fallen into a ditch and hit their head.

As soon as SCP-5248 reaches land, it is to be fired upon with small arms until it is destroyed. Only direct damage to the eyes is sufficient to cause the entity to demanifest, but due to the danger of creating an SCP-5248-B instance by aiming too precisely at the eyes, large volumes of imprecise munitions must be dispensed until one manages to hit its mark by chance.

While engaging instances of SCP-5248 or SCP-5248-B, it is vital that personnel do not make eye contact with the instances to avoid becoming instances of SCP-5248-B.

Description: SCP-5248 is a humanoid male roughly 1.9 meters in height and of a lean build. The entity's head appears similar to that of a bald human of varying ethnicity, with some notable differences differences. The entity's eyes are vertically oriented, glazed yellow-orange ovals, roughly two inches across and three and a half inches tall, resembling sea glass. The eyes are highly reflective, easily visible through deep water, but are not capable of sight. In place of a mouth, the entity has a beard-like set of what appear to be tentacles made from rubbery flaps of human skin.

While there is some variation in its attire between manifestations, there are some constants. In all manifestations, it has appeared wearing a suit, tie, and linen gloves of a the same, solid color, with no skin visible below the neck. Though the color and type of these garments varies, they appear to be waterproof. In all manifestations, the entity wears a pair of men's size 16 black tap-shoes, designated SCP-5248-A, which are left behind upon the demanifestation of the SCP-5248 instance.

SCP-5248-A instances appear mostly normal upon cursory inspection, with the exception that they cannot be dirtied by any means, sloughing off any dirt, dust, grease, or grime applied to their surface. They are susceptible to damage, but even if fully destroyed

Outside of testing under the supervision of a Level 4 Researcher, personnel are not permitted to wear SCP-5248-A.

No further anomalous effects appear until a human male attempts to wear two shoes SCP-5248-A, from either the same or different sets. The subject will enter a sort of trance, designated SCP-5248-C, becoming highly suggestible and open to questioning. If line of sight is lost on SCP-5248-C, they will vanish, leaving behind the pair of SCP-5248-A. Simultaneously an instance of SCP-5248 will manifest on the ocean floor, between 15 and 8 km away from the shore of Alki beach. The Entity will then proceed to walk along the floor of the sound, directly towards the beach.

The entity is calm, not directly attacking humans even when directly attacked, only looking towards them.
Its body is highly resilient, impervious to damage by any means tested. Upon directly damaging its eyes, the entity will immediately demanifest, instantly vanishing without a trace, save for SCP-5248-A and any SCP-5248-B instances.

Any human who makes eye contact with SCP-5248 will become an instance of SCP-5248-B. This property is also present in any photograph, video, or depiction of the entity, but only if there is an active instance of SCP-5248.

Instances of SCP-5248-B retain their previous skills, memories, and intelligence, but the original personality is lost. Instances of SCP-5248-B share a hivemind between themselves, SCP-5248, and any current instances of SCP-5248-C. SCP-5248-B instances are driven to create new instances of SCP-5248-B and, in the event of SCP-5248's demanifestation, to retrieve and wear SCP-5248-A and create a new instance of SCP-5248.
