Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-1 is to be positioned in Site-█, within a standard Safe-Object Containment Unit, and should only be accessible to Level-2 personnel and above.

SCP-XXXX-2 is to be contained at Site-█, locked within a small steel container with 5 cm. thick steel walls and a door of the same material that is remotely controlled from the sector’s operational panels. A camera is to be fixated to the top of the inner containment unit, facing SCP-XXXX-2. Three guards must be posted in the area to watch the outer containment unit, while two guards watch the live feed of the inner containment unit.

If any movement is noticed from either the unit ot SCP-XXXX-2 at any moment in time, the door to the chamber must be opened immediately and one of the guards posted in the area must converse with SCP-XXXX-2 for however long it requests. Requests by SCP-XXXX-2 to see SCP-XXXX-1 must be denied as kindly as possible as to not provoke escape from SCP-XXXX-2. If the live feed to the inner containment unit is interrupted, the door to the container must be immediately opened and the guards posted must check for the presence of SCP-XXXX-2.

In the event of a containment breach, no less than four guards at SCP-XXXX-1's location are instructed to enter SCP-XXXX-1's containment unit wearing anti-memetic gear and await the appearance of SCP-XXXX-2. Upon its arrival to the containment unit, guards are instructed to not let SCP-XXXX-2 get within the vicinity of SCP-XXXX-1, and SCP-XXXX-2 must be subdued as quickly as possible.

If SCP-XXXX-2 is being transported to a new location, no less than three members who are aware of SCP-XXXX-2's effects must remain in the area for SCP-XXXX-2's conversational purposes.

Description: SCP-XXXX-1 appears to be a dark green book, containing 243 separate pages. The book has no title, no engravings of any sort, nothing written on the spine nor the back, and no discernable markings that make it appear out of the ordinary. There is no damage to any outside section of the book, and when opened, it is blank, and displays no anomalous effects. SCP-XXXX-2 is a dark red book of the same condition, i.e. no damage, no markings, no author, and no title. SCP-XXXX-2 cannot be opened by any physical means, so the presence of writing within SCP-XXXX-2 is unknown.

While SCP-XXXX-1 has never been noted to exhibit anomalous effects, SCP-XXXX-2 is sapient and capable of complex speech in multiple languages, most notably English, Japanese, and Tagalog. Attempts to reveal the method of speech have proved unsuccessful. SCP-XXXX-2 also has displayed the ability to transport from one location to another via teleportation, although it has been noted that, far from the presence of SCP-XXXX-1, it can only reappear in a location meant for the placement of books, such as shelves or pedestals. When SCP-XXXX-2 is within the vicinity of SCP-XXXX-1 (recorded distances up to █ miles), SCP-XXXX-2 can teleport onto any surface that can hold an item, including floors of any variety.

SCP-XXXX-2 will, at random periods, convulse violently. Whenever this occurs, someone in the area must immediately converse with SCP-XXXX-2 in person (See Incident Log-2JP). These conversations can range from any subject, i.e. bodily functions, atmospheric changes, and the dialects of dead languages. Conversations will typically end with SCP-XXXX-2 asking the subject to politely walk away and bid farewell. SCP-XXXX-2 will then become unresponsive to verbal communications.

SCP-XXXX-2 has been described as "emotionless" and "royal" in the way that it speaks in most languages. It is theorized that perhaps it can only use old conversational vocabulary in order to speak, as new words that are introduced are asked to be clarified by SCP-XXXX-2, but no evidence of such a behavior has been found. A particular interview with a member that had a conversation wtih SCP-XXXX-2 reveals motivations and mechanics behind specific behaviors (See Interview-O08). SCP-XXXX-2 has claimed to describe his reasoning for conversation as a "conquest of knowledge," wishing to learn more about every factor that could bring about an end-of-reality scenario. According to SCP-XXXX-2, SCP-XXXX-1 is a vessel in which knowledge is transferred and, when SCP-XXXX is formed, the knowledge is used as a weapon to remind living beings within proximity of the end of reality. Higher surveillance has been requested since this incident, but O5 has declared that no precautions should be taken due to the factors that would be required for SCP-XXXX to cause such massive destruction. SCP-XXXX has not yet been designated as reality-destroying/altering objects.

SCP-XXXX-2 has been known on multiple occasions to ask for the presence of SCP-XXXX-1, referring to SCP-XXXX-1 as "the green one." When denied politely, SCP-XXXX-2 will return to normal conversation. If denied in an attitude similar to emotionless or hostile, SCP-XXXX-2 will then proceed to transport itself away from its current location, regardless of distance from nearby book placeholders, and make its way to SCP-XXXX-1 as quickly as possible. When SCP-XXXX-2 comes into contact with SCP-XXXX-1, the books become difficult to separate through physical means and is, at this point, referred to as SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX will remain motionless. When a human subject gets too close to SCP-XXXX (minimum distances measured at 12 meters), the subject will abruptly collapse and begin to enter a seizure-like state and experience heightened adrenaline, up to 400% more than that of an average human during sexual states. During these convulsions, subjects will often chant to themselves in various languages before expiring due to [DATA EXPUNGED]. The adrenaline effects caused by SCP-XXXX are entirely memetic and can be counter-acted with the proper gear. The minimum amount of force required to separate the books in SCP-XXXX-2 is roughly 4,000 Newtons. Once separated, SCP-XXXX-2 remains docile and does not attempt to transport itself to any other location. Behavior resumes itself back to the normal state, i.e. remaining docile until wishing to converse once more.

Discovery Log, Video Transcription
Background: (Anomalous effects reported within a house on the corner of █████████ Boulevard, East of a neighborhood in Southern Indiana; MTF-█ sent to investigate; four members, armed and wearing protective gear enter the building.)
<Begin Log, 12:37 PM on 11/23/██>
(Bizarre whispers can be heard in a room down the front hall.)
MTF-█-1: What is that? Can you hear it? Someone's still in here.
MTF-█-2: Hush it. It could be the thing we're looking for.
(The team walks forward and down the hall, raising their weapons and looking into the room with an open door; a Caucasian man, formerly known as ██████ ███████, is sitting down, hugging his knees as he occasionally throws his head forward, resembling a seizure-like state; he continues to chant the same phrase in multiple languages, some common and others unknown; the phrase has been translated to be: "The void consumes.")
MTF-█-3: Sir, stand up, hands behind your back!
(██████ is unresponsive to the command, continuing to chant.)
MTF-█-3: Sir, can you hear me? (Pauses.) Sir!
(██████ continues to be unresponsive.)
MTF-█-1: Keep quiet, look around the area for any abnormalities.
(The MTF-█ team proceeds to search around the room for anomalous effects of any sort; three minutes later through their search, ██████ begins to convulse violently.)
MTF-█-5: Sir, what are you doing? Halt!
(The team holds up their weapons and aim at ██████; before he can speak any further, ██████ collapses and proceeds to [DATA EXPUNGED] before expiring. The team lowers their weapons and searches for any objects that could be of abnormality; MTF-█-2 picks up SCP-XXXX, only to realize he cannot separate the components from one another.)
MTF-█-2: Hey, I need some help over here.
(MTF-█-4 comes over to help remove the books from one another; they are unable to separate them with their strongest forces.)
MTF-█-2: I think we found our SCP.
(The team begins to safely handle SCP-XXXX by placing it within a standard portable containment unit and transporting it away from the building.)
<End Log, 1:24 PM on 11/23/██>
Closing Statement: SCP-XXXX had been brought to Site-█, but other MTF members who attempted to retrieve SCP-XXXX collapsed and expired. Many MTF with different gear made their way into the cargo area until finally, a force team with ant-memetic gear had gotten close to SCP-XXXX without being affected. With the help of █ MTF members, they were able to pull the two components apart and store them separately in Site-█ for proper studying.

Incident Log-2JP, Audio Transcription
Background: (One MTF member is posted to guard the entrance to SCP-XXXX-2's containment unit, with Dr.███████; approximately three minutes later, a loud banging noise can be heard from SCP-XXXX-2's container. The guard immediately opens the containment door under protocol, and witnesses the source of the noise.)
<Begin Log, 3:16 PM on 11/27/██>
Guard: (Using headpiece) We have movement, O5, we have movement-
SCP-XXXX-2: I wish to talk.
Guard: (Using headpiece) Doctor, the SCP is speaking! ███████, you there?
SCP-XXXX-2: You there. Speak to me.
Guard: (Directly to SCP-XXXX-2, stuttering) Are you talking to me? I can't converse with you until I have permission from-
(The guard posted is interrupted by Dr.███████ speaking through his earpiece.)
Dr.███████: We hear you loud and clear, stay put and don't speak to it until we get Level 5 clearance down there.
Guard: Alright. (Turns to SCP-XXXX-2, holding his weapon up in defense)
SCP-XXXX-2: Why won't you talk to me? Where is the green one? If you are going to hold me captive, I would prefer you at least give me a list of my restrictions.
Guard: (Into headpiece) Doctor, the SCP is asking about a "green one." Any idea what it's talking about?
Dr.███████ We're working on it, don't say a word. Keep an eye on it and wait for the personnel. It should take no longer than 2 minutes.
Guard: (Distressful tone) Okay, two minutes. Two minu-
SCP-XXXX-2: If you don't tell me where he is or where I am, we are going to have a problem, fellow guard.
(The guard posted continues to ignore the comments made by SCP-XXXX-2 and proceeds to cock his designated weapon.)
SCP-XXXX-2: Must we all resort to violence? I promise no harm to come to you I wish to speak to you, now return the favor.
(The guard remains silent as SCP-XXXX-2 continues to make banging noises more rapidly, presumed to be an increase in convulsion rate.)
SCP-XXXX-2: Very well. If violence is what is to be expected, I should return the favor.
(The audio file begins to corrupt as distorted screams are heard, followed by strange squishing noises and [DATA EXPUNGED]. Approximately one and a half minutes later, members arrive at the scene.)
MTF-Handler O5, the SCP is gone. And ███████ is… well, he's unrecognizable. But definitely dead. Dr.███████?
(Audio file ends with the MTF handler picking up the audio device off the wall outside the containment unit and ending the recording. All security cameras and microphones had been disrupted during SCP-XXXX-2's convulsions and had been destroyed shortly after the death of the posted guard, and therefore, no video or audio had been captured within the unit itself.)
<End Log, 3:20 PM on 11/27/██>
Closing Statement: Other MTF members later reported SCP-XXXX-2 throughout Site-█ via rapid disappearances and reappearances on shelves. A couple of minutes later, SCP-XXXX-2 had been reported to once again be attached to SCP-XXXX-1. Using anti-memetic gear, the MTF team was able to pull the components apart once more. SCP-XXXX-1 was shipped to Site-█ in an attempt to keep the components separate. Shortly after the original SCP-XXXX-2 unit had been cleaned up, Level 5 security designed a new containment unit over the course of █ weeks in order to properly surveillance movement and speech conducted by SCP-XXXX-2. More guards are posted to monitor movement and, in the event of convulsion, guards are required to speak to SCP-XXXX-2 for as long as it wishes.

Interview Log-O08, Audio Transcription
Interviewed: MTF-█-█
Interviewer: Dr.███████
<Begin Log, 10:57 AM on 12/2/██>
MTF-█-█: Am I here for what I think I'm here for?
Dr.███████: Yes. We sent you in to have a conversation with SCP-XXXX-2 about itself and its counterpart's origins, and much to the transcriptor's dismay, the audio and video of your particular conversation was distorted and unrecognizable. Per our protocol, we have to figure out why it happened, and we believe it was SCP-XXXX-2 attempting to redact its own content. So please, enlighten us on the entire conversation.
MTF-█-█: Well, it was more of a one-sided conversation. I entered the chamber and said a quick greeting. The book just stopped shaking and said hello back. For a while, we talked about greetings and how they can be silly sometimes, but we eventually reached a point where we were talking about the reasons behind specific greetings and I took my chance to sway the conversation. I asked him his reasoning for wanting to talk- and I was careful not to bring up the green book- and the book was silent for a couple of seconds. After that, he sort of began to speak almost like a… philosopher. The book began to talk about how he loved knowledge. He said that anything he can learn, he wishes to learn, like an impulse he can't avoid. He didn't directly say what type of knowledge he wishes to acquire, but I do remember him saying something about wanting the knowledge to "take in every factor of the endtimes." He began to talk about the green book, talking about him almost like an item rather than a sentient being. He called the green book a "vessel," like an object made only for transferring knowledge. After that, he said that he uses the knowledge as a warning. Something along the lines of wanting every sentient creature to know of the dangers of the end of the universe. Again, it was all very formal, so it was somewhat difficult to understand. When I asked of his origins, he went silent and asked to see the green book, so I just denied it and continued to talk with him about seismic activity on different planets.
Dr.███████: (Remains silent for a couple seconds before responding) That is… very informative. Thank you so much.
MTF-█-█: Alright, can I leave now?
<End Log, 11:06 AM on 12/2/██>

NOTE: You need to get your procedure standards straight, O5. First of all, what if this SCP had been touch reactant? Your MTF team would have been eliminated when they transported it. Not to mention the countless people who died upon the SCP's arrival to Site-█. You know, we spent an hour, an HOUR trying to figure out what was causing the MTF team to remain fine while everyone who approached the books just collapsed. I don't know if you're doing this on purpose, or you genuinely don't understand the gravity of the situation, but your protocols aren't safe enough. While I know that there will always be an outlier that can be fatal, deaths are happening too often and the expense of our staff are worth far more than our expenditures. Always expect memetic effects, always expect conditional reactions, and never let your staff tamper with the objects until SCPs have been placed in a safe containment, starting with a heavy containment unit. Is that so hard? It surely can't be that expensive to have units built solely for the initial containment of SCPs with unknown effects. Just take my advice into consideration, I've had too many friends destroyed by your loose protocols.
-Dr.███████
