Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard high-value storage locker at Site-█. Once a year, it is to be cleaned by maintenance staff, and the [REDACTED] core is to be replaced with a fresh one of at least 97% purity. A standard Foundation GPS tracker with satellite reporting is to remain securely attached to SCP-XXXX's case, and its batteries are to be changed every 4 months.
Should a breach of containment occur, once data is received from the tracker, SCP-XXXX's orbit is to be plotted by staff physicists, and the time and date of its next emergence is to be calculated. MTF 74-Lambda "Globetrotters", will be dispatched to this site with multiple █ T electromagnets. As a containment breach could result in a Level-B information leak should SCP-XXXX emerge in a public place, retrieval is to be a high priority.
Testing on this item has been approved with the written authorization of two Level-3 personnel.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a heavy cylindrical metal device similar in size and shape to a paint can attached to a worn leather belt. SCP-XXXX's face contains a dial and two switches, labeled in outdated Serbian. The switch is marked as an on/off switch, and on the dial is scrawled "Phase". The second switch's marking has faded to the point of being unrecognizable. On the back of SCP-XXXX is perfectly smooth disc of pale yellow metal 10 cm in diameter, proven to be 99.99% pure 191Au through mass spectrometry.
Internally, SCP-XXXX consists of a web of fine-gauge copper wires arranged in an incredibly complex 3-dimensional circuit cast in resin, containing several thousand individual electronic components. While NMR imaging has shown SCP-XXXX to be constructed of mundane materials, the shape in which they are arranged has been incomprehensible to Foundation electrical engineers. Its power source consists of [DATA EXPUNGED].
When activated, SCP-XXXX vibrates in a way which is not fully understood. This vibration shifts the alignment of SCP-XXXX's atoms relative to the rest of the world depending on the position of the "Phase" dial, and allows SCP-XXXX to pass through normally solid and liquid objects. Notably, SCP-XXXX still makes contact with gases, and electromagnetic and gravitational fields influence it normally. If a solid object is in contact with the rear disk of SCP-XXXX when activated, then the intangibility effect will extend to this object. SCP-XXXX and its "passenger" appear to be welded at the atomic level; all attempts to separate the two while SCP-XXXX is active have as of yet failed.
To deactivate, the device, the power switch must be pressed by someone or something in the same phase as SCP-XXXX. If this is not doable, however, the device can also be deactivated by exposure to an oscillating magnetic field at a frequency of exactly ██ Hz. Current theory holds that this mechanism was designed as a failsafe in case of accidental activation of SCP-XXXX.
Recovery:
SCP-XXXX was initially discovered based on multiple sightings spaced over several years of a "flying ghoul" in the heavily populated city of [REDACTED]. Agents E██████ and F███ responded, and after 2 weeks of surveillance, observed a humanoid shape quickly fly across the skyline before disappearing into the ground. Further analysis revealed that the object reappeared every 6██ hours precisely, and a research team managed to determine the exact path that it followed. Using a high-speed camera, the object was determined to be a set of heavily decomposed human remains wearing SCP-XXXX. After months of unsuccessful capture attempts, researchers attempted to use a high-power electromagnet to grapple the object. When it was pulled into the field, SCP-XXXX deactivated, and was brought to Site █.
SCP-XXXX was initially inert, until researchers discovered that the unlabeled switch opened a panel revealing the device's power source, which had desiccated severely. On insertion of a new [REDACTED], SCP-XXXX became fully functional again.
Test Log:
Experiment E-953275
Subject: D-7481
Researcher: Dr. S██████
Purpose: To obtain more data on the effects of SCP-XXXX.
Procedure: D-7481 is to be equipped with SCP-XXXX, and shall attempt to throw several metal ball bearings while intangible.
Results: SCP-XXXX engaged. Subject falls through the floor screaming.
MTF 75-Λ dispatched, subject recovered on third attempt.
The subject's skin was badly charred, and his cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation.
Note from Dr. C█████: Did you guys even read the recovery log?
Experiment E-953276
Subject: D-7921
Researcher: Dr. S██████
Purpose: To obtain more data on the effects of SCP-XXXX.
Procedure: D-7921 is to be equipped with SCP-XXXX, and attempt to throw several metal ball bearings while intangible. Subject will be suspended by wind from a skydiving simulation chamber in Site-█'s Agent training center.
Results: SCP-XXXX engaged. Subject's position was maintained by the chamber.
Subject removed metal balls from pocket and tossed them at researchers. The balls remained intangible until they left the subject's hand, at which point they resumed normal behavior.
Note from Dr. S██████: Hah, so it DOES extend to objects the user is touching. Hmm, I wonder…
Experiment E-953277
Subject: Dr. S██████ (D-class personnel cannot be used for this experiment due to the high possibility of escape.)
Purpose: To attempt to utilize SCP-XXXX for locomotion.
Procedure: SCP-240 will be used to attempt to control the motion of SCP-XXXX's wearer.
Results: Upon review of security footage, Dr. S██████ appears to have successfully controlled his position while intangible using SCP-240. He was captured on cameras flying through various parts of Site-█. However, 37:02 into the experiment, Dr. S██████ appears to have inadvertently entered SCP-███'s chamber, and was fatally [DATA EXPUNGED].
Experiment E-953278
Subject: D-7484
Researcher: Dr. C█████
Purpose: To test the feasibility of SCP-XXXX as a high-speed transportation device.
Procedure: D-7484 is to be equipped with SCP-XXXX and a standard Foundation Class-R space suit, and intubated with a breathing apparatus containing █ hours of oxygen. Subject will be launched using air jets in a calculated orbit which will take him to Site-██, which is almost diametrically opposite Site-█ on the Earth. MTF 75-Λ will be on standby to receive subject.
Results: SCP-XXXX engaged. Subject panics, and is reminded that noncooperation is grounds for immediate termination.
Subject launched on schedule.
Subject received █ hours later by MTF, within 4 meters of the designated location.
Subject was alive, but had experienced third degree burns on 98% of his body.
Upon resuscitation, subject stated: "There were… so many layers. It felt like I was falling forever, through the light and darkness. Then my skin… it started boiling."
Subject then fell unconscious, and, despite the best efforts of the Foundation burn ward, expired from his injuries.
Subsequent experiments using SCP-XXXX to study the Earth's core are currently under review.
Addendum:
The corpse that SCP-XXXX was attached to was dressed in the tatters of 1890's-era formal wear, and contained no surviving personal effects other than a pair of ornate jeweled cufflinks. DNA testing of the remains did not produce a match to any known persons in the Foundation's database, but did yield a hit with a civilian criminal database. Blood and hair samples matching this corpse were collected (and digitized decades later) from the scenes of several high-profile jewelry robberies that occurred in the New England area from 188█-190█. None of these thefts were ever solved, despite extensive efforts by law enforcement at the time. These thefts were linked by a set of strange circumstances: In no case was there any sign of forced entry or damage to locks and vaults protecting the jewels, and guards never observed anyone enter or exit the area where the jewels were kept. In one case, a necklace was stolen from a jewelry safe that had only one key, while that key was on the owner's person.
Targets of the thefts appeared random at the time, but further analysis has discovered a pattern. Many of the individuals who were robbed had business connections to the General Electric Co. or personal connections to its proprietor at the time, Mr. Thomas Edison. Also of note, several of the pieces of jewelry taken were known to contain ███████-bearing corundum crystals, a gemstone known by the Foundation to be a highly efficient directional transducer of electromagnetic waves.
Update 12/7/20██: A detailed examination of police records has unearthed another interesting correlation between these thefts. In three separate cases, guards in the building around the times of the thefts were distracted by a strange phenomenon outside. One described it as "a ball of light… suspended outside the window, hovering there, as if it was beckoning me". This description appears to match the phenomenon known as ball lightning, which the Foundation understands to be produced through [REDACTED]. Considering the time period and the target of the thefts, this highly suggests the involvement of [DATA EXPUNGED].
