Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX poses no evident threat to humanity. The object is to be contained in a standard humanoid containment cell and is to be placed at all times on the provided mattress. SCP-XXXX requires no sustenance, hygienic maintenance, or other care that would be commonly required by humanoid anomalies. No additional security measures are to be taken.
An archived iteration of SCP-XXXX documentation is to be made available to as many foundation personnel as feasibly possible. Full documentation as it exists in this article is to be dispersed to as many level 4 personnel at each Foundation site as feasibly possible.
Individuals who display evidence of beliefs or actions regarding SCP-XXXX contrary to those provided above are to be prescribed a session of psychological counseling to dissuade their behavior at the earliest convenience. If the individual persists, they are to be immediately treated with Class B amnestics.
Individuals who merely display evidence of skepticism in the validity of SCP-XXXX’s documentation and non-existent threat level are to attend psychological counseling to dissuade their behavior at an interval of once per week for a maximum of three (3) months. If the subject’s behavior continues at the end of this period, or if at any point they qualify for the conditions described above, they are to be immediately treated with Class B amnestics.
Description: SCP-XXXX physically resembles an adult Caucasian human male that exists in a perpetual state of REM sleep. The biological process by which SCP-XXXX is able to maintain this state is unknown at this time.
Inquiries into this line of questioning have been met with total failure due to SCP-XXXX’s secondary effect. SCP-XXXX is physically indestructible on a molecular level by all known means currently possessed by the Foundation. As such, no DNA samples can be extracted. Scientific measurements of the anomaly’s vital signs show expected results for a human resembling its physical appearance. Analysis of the surface of SCP-XXXX’s skin consistently shows 0% bacterial contamination. SCP-XXXX does not appear to suffer from dehydration, starvation, bedsores, or any other condition that could result from prolonged coma.
Despite its apparent invulnerability to physical harm, SCP-XXXX appears to age at the standard rate of an average human.
To date, SCP-XXXX has never been documented to display evidence of the ability to exit REM sleep.
Addendum: As of ██-██-19██, ███ Foundation employees who were previously aware of SCP-XXXX have orchestrated containment breaches for the purpose of confirming the object’s nature. ██% of the apprehended individuals have expressed adamant belief that SCP-XXXX does in fact pose an imminent risk of potential harm to humanity at large, despite the lack of evidence supporting this claim.
When asked to justify their belief, these individuals are unable to provide adequate reasoning. No amount of counter argument has been successful thus far in convincing affected individuals to abandon their beliefs, up to and including exposure of full SCP-XXXX documentation and experimental data. Visual exposure of SCP-XXXX to affected individuals results in them saying ‘He may not be dangerous now, but he might awaken soon’, or some variation thereof.
Affected individuals initially display attitudes of distrust and hostility towards their immediate authority figures and/or the Foundation as a whole. Skepticism regarding the legitimacy of SCP documentation will not extend beyond SCP-XXXX, however. In addition, beliefs expressed by affected individuals are intransmissible to non-affected personnel, though individuals with non-anomalous skepticism of SCP-XXXX may be initially misdiagnosed as suffers of SCP-XXXX-1 prior to the expected onset of more severe symptoms.
If left untreated, the condition universally develops into a compulsion requiring affected individuals to ‘re-verify’ the truth SCP-XXXX’s nature at increasingly frequent intervals. This state inevitably results in the compulsion to directly perceive SCP-XXXX at all times in case it chooses to ‘awaken’ while the affected individual is absent. If they are prevented from perceiving SCP-XXXX for any reason, affected individuals have been known to react violently and will attempt to reach SCP-XXXX’s location by any and all means necessary, demonstrating anomalous knowledge of its location and immediate surroundings. They will not, however, go out of their way to inflict harm on Foundation personnel if they are not threatened or if doing so does not facilitate their goal. Affected individuals will care for their basic needs such as eating and hygiene so long as it is possible to do so while maintaining direct perception of SCP-XXXX, but are completely unwilling and unable to sleep under any circumstance, including heavy sedation. It is currently hypothesized that affected individuals will eventually perish of sleep deprivation due to lack of self-care without Foundation intervention.
This phenomenon has been labelled SCP-XXXX-1 and affects approximately █% of Foundation personnel who are aware of the object per year through an unknown selection process. There is no documented upper limit to the quantity of individuals that can be affected at one time. SCP-XXXX been demonstrated to affect all strata of Foundation personnel in ratios that would be expected if the selection process operated under random chance.
Class B amnestics have been shown to completely reverse SCP-XXXX-1 effects in all cases. Relapses are considered relatively rare, occurring only in █.██% of cases. Due to the fact that re-introduction of SCP-XXXX to formerly affected individuals does not affect their odds of being selected by SCP-XXXX-1, relapses are currently attributed to pure coincidence.
Statistical analysis indicates with a high degree of certainty that SCP-XXXX-1 does not serve as a vector for itself. To elaborate, transmission of SCP-XXXX-1 to individuals who are aware of SCP-XXXX-1 and unaware of SCP-XXXX have thus far remained unaffected by SCP-XXXX-1 since 19██.
As SCP-XXXX was one of the most widely known and long-standing anomalies in Foundation care prior to the first instance of SCP-XXXX-1, it has been deemed impractical to restrict documentation, as doing so poses a risk of conflating legitimate skepticism regarding SCP-XXXX with SCP-XXXX-1. Access to documentation regarding SCP-XXXX-1 has been restricted for the same reason.
Containment procedures for the pre-SCP-XXXX-1 article been updated to include the requirement that SCP-XXXX be exposed to as many individuals as possible in order to facilitate ease of containment of SCP-XXXX-1.
