Item #: I don't think an SCP No. should be assigned at this stage. So for now it will be called SCP-MUZAK

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-MUZAK is to be stored in a soundproof room, outside of which should be a file cabinet containing instances of SCP-MUZAK-1A. Instances of SCP-MUZAK-1B are to be put in opaque folders and contained in a standard safe; they are not to be accessed or looked at except during controlled testing. Instances of SCP-MUZAK-1C are to be kept in their own safe, and are not to be accessed unless given explicit permission by the designated researcher.

Access to SCP-MUZAK is only allowed under permission from A-Class personnel. Access to instances of SCP-MUZAK-1A is open to all personnel C-Class or above, as long as said personnel keep instances of SCP-MUZAK-1A filed in alphabetical order; if the instance is representative of a piece of music, personnel are to file the instance according to the title of said music, and not the artist. Other instances will be given names to be filed under.

Under no circumstances are any songs with anomalous effects to be exposed to SCP-MUZAK without their intended lyrics.

Description: SCP-MUZAK is a modified phonograph originating in 1880. SCP-MUZAK consists of a brass tube with one end open, and the other leading into a sealed 34cm x 26cm x 20cm oak box. A brass needle protrudes from the box, and is positioned over a 25cm x 18cm x 2cm plank of oak, which is attached to the box using an unknown adhesive. Both the oak box and oak plank are covered in a yet-unidentified varnish, and an inscription is written on the side of the box opposite to the plank:

SOWANA'S VOICE

The anomalous effects of SCP-MUZAK only occur if the brass tube is exposed to sound and a sheet of paper is placed on the oak plank. Once these conditions are met, the needle will begin to write symbols on the sheet of paper, extending and retracting as necessary. Marks appear to be made with India ink, despite the needle never showing signs of containing any sort of ink. Writing continues until the sound stops, at which point the symbols cover the entirety of the paper. Papers covered in symbols produced by SCP-MUZAK are designated as SCP-MUZAK-1 and classed as -1A, -1B, or -1C according to their effects.

When subjects look at instances of SCP-MUZAK-1, the sound exposed to SCP-MUZAK at time of writing is recalled. Subjects exposed to instances of SCP-MUZAK-1 describe the sound as not coming through their ears, but rather being present only in the mind, in an experience described as "reading the sounds". Sounds recalled by instances of SCP-MUZAK-1 are not audible to anyone not looking at the instance. Subjects can freely look away from the instance, which reportedly causes the sound recall to stop. If a subject then looks back at the instance of SCP-MUZAK-1, the sound recall will continue from the point the subject looked away, and will occur for the duration SCP-MUZAK was exposed to the original sound. Once the recall has ended, the subject need only look away from then back to the instance for the sound recall to begin anew. Instances of SCP-MUZAK-1 exhibiting only these effects are classed as SCP-MUZAK-1A.

Instances of SCP-MUZAK-1 that demonstrate extra anomalous effects or normally undetectable sounds are designated SCP-MUZAK-1B. SCP-MUZAK has the ability to transfer anomalous effects from the originating sound to SCP-MUZAK-1, as demonstrated by experiments exposing SCP-MUZAK to instances of SCP-████. SCP-MUZAK also detects any sounds that are exclusive, allowing detection of conversations between entities and sounds only they can hear, such as SCP-████.

If a song has been transcribed by SCP-MUZAK already, and is input again without vocals, a woman's voice will sometimes be heard singing the intended lyrics. This woman, designated SCP-MUZAK-2 is reported to have a soft, sad voice, tinged with a light, unidentified accent. Subjects exposed to SCP-MUZAK-2's voice invariably describe it as "the most beautiful voice in the world". The reason SCP-MUZAK-2 chooses certain songs is unknown, and it has not been reported to speak. At this time, it is not known if SCP-MUZAK-2 is simply a function of SCP-MUZAK, or if it is a unique entity. Instances of SCP-MUZAK-1 that contain the voice of SCP-MUZAK-2 are classed as SCP-MUZAK-1C.

Addendum: ██/██/20██: If a subject looking at an instance of SCP-MUZAK-1 is deaf, they will still be able to hear the sound recall. It appears to have a profound effect on such subjects, particularly if the subject was deaf from birth.
I don't think I've ever seen D-█████ so happy. It's not every day you get to see someone discover a new sense. — Dr. S█████

██/██/20██: Attempts to replicate the symbols made by SCP-MUZAK do not induce sound recall. However, taking pictures of said symbols does.

██/██/20██: SCP-MUZAK-2 has been detected changing the pronouns used in the lyrics of Am I Blue? from

There was a time I was her only one/But now I'm the sudden lonely one
to
There was a time he was my only one/But now I'm the sudden lonely one.

Additionally, SCP-MUZAK-2 appears to respond to songs typically described as "sad", or those about loss. This suggests that SCP-MUZAK-2's effects are separate from SCP-MUZAK. Further testing using such songs is required.

██/██/20██: Asking questions into SCP-MUZAK does not elicit any response from SCP-MUZAK-2

██/██/20██: Video of SCP-MUZAK using all known wavelengths reveals nothing. Permission asked to open SCP-MUZAK and see how it works.
Granted. Just don't damage it. — O5-██

██/██/20██: Oak box easily opened. Varnish identified as standard for late 1800's. Brass tube can be seen to connect to needles that vibrate when exposed to sound. Needles run from brass tube to unknown contraption with copper wire sticking out of it. Copper wire runs to mechanism that turns gears to move the outside needle. The contraption cannot be removed due to entanglement with copper wires. Electricity visible to the naked eye can be seen moving along the copper wires when SCP-MUZAK is exposed to sound. Attempts to harvest said electricity have been unsuccessful, leading to the assumption that the electricity is anomalous. Further testing required.

██/██/20██: Extensive testing reveals little else about SCP-MUZAK and SCP-MUZAK-2. The anomalous electricity remains unharvested and unidentified. SCP-MUZAK-2's identity and history remain a mystery. The only information we can glean from its lyrics are:

1) It lost someone it was romantically attracted to.
2) This romantic attraction was not mutual.
3) SCP-MUZAK-2 did something to upset the object of their affection and was punished for it.

The only time SCP-MUZAK-2 did something other than changing pronouns was ending the song Space Oddity with the words "I'm sorry." Further testing may be required.
Actually, she's told us all we need to know. — Dr. ██████
