Item #: SCP-4886
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-4886 are to be kept in a spherical steel cell with diameter of five (5) metres and a feeding hatch fitted to the highest point of the cell.
When the number of SCP-4886 instances drops below one hundred (100) (this usually occurs every four (4) months) a single live rodent is to be dropped through the feeding hatch and into the cell of SCP-4886 to allow it to feed and reproduce.
No personnel are to go within twenty metres (20m) of or enter the containment cell at any point. In the event that SCP-4886 is able to come into contact with a live subject larger than a rodent outside of testing, the immediate area is to be evacuated and put on lockdown until the feeding event is complete.
Description: SCP-4886 is a member of the Kingdom Plantae, and the Phylum Anthophyta. No more about its taxonomic classification is known, however it is thought to be distantly related to the Venus Fly Trap. Instances of SCP-4886 are referred to as spores and a single instance of SCP-4886 is able to survive up to five (5) years without any sustenance or water.
Particularly young spores have a diameter of approximately five milimetres (5mm), but can grow to have a diameter of ten centimetres (10cm). Each spore has a bowl-like shape and has a green exterior dotted with large black spots. Although each spore has a green main body, it should be noted that they do not photosynthesize and have shown to prefer dark and cold environments. They have dark-red interiors and the rims of their bowl-like shapes are lined with several sharp teeth-like protrusions.
SCP-4886 has a distinct and harzardous feeding action. When a spore is disturbed and collides with an object, the bowl-shape quickly clamps closed around the teeth-like protrusions, embedding them within the object. This often occurs accidentally on the walls of the containment cell and any spores that do this quickly die, as once they have closed they cannot reopen. This clamping mechanism has shown to be extremely strong, often tearing through clothing. If this occurs on the surface of any animal large enough the spore will immediately begin to reproduce.
Reproduction has shown to be extremely painful to the subject and has always resulted in extreme panic and death. Once a spore has effectively bitten an animal, it begins to draw the blood from its circulatory system. This blood goes through a currently unknown process and results in the production of more SCP-4886 spores. These new spores are very small and are produced and stored inside the usually much larger spore, which is still biting down on the subject. As the spore fills with more and more offspring, it begins to swell to much larger than it's original size and its walls begin to become extremely weak. This point is usually reached around three (3) seconds after the initial bite. Due to the subject's state of panic, they will usually swat at the spore that has bitten them with any limbs they have available. This swatting will burst the now extremely large spore, leaving its remains still embedded in the subject and releasing the reproduced spores inside of it. Most of these released spores will find a new place on the subject to latch onto, and the process will begin again.
