SCP-4269 while exposed to darkness

Item #: SCP-4269

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4269 is to be kept in a large thermally insulated chamber with lights turned on at all times zero light during normal routine. Though under no circumstances must personnel enter the containment chamber with the lights turned off. While personnel are in the chamber, the lights are required to be kept at full capacity. Only during special tests using Class-D personnel may the lights be dimmed. The chamber must be kept at a temperature of -34°C in the winter, and -10°C in the summer to simulate an arctic environment. In case of facility wide power loss of both main and backup systems, the chamber will make use of its own backup power system, see Addendum-042.

Description: SCP-4269 is an extremely rare anomaly that occurs in Aptenodytes Forsteri (Emperor Penguin) chicks. Whenever these chicks are exposed to light levels below circa 0.4 lux, they begin shaking violently, followed by coughing and screaming. After circa 20 seconds their eyes begin glowing red and they become extremely aggressive, attacking almost* any living thing near them.
At the time of writing, 8 of these chicks are contained at site-13, however an unknown amount is still roaming the Antarctic. The first known encounter with SCP-4269 occured on a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 19██. The encounter resulted in the deaths of 3 scientists. Due to the nature of SCP-4269 it is possible that it had been encountered on earlier expeditions.
It has been observed that while in close proximity, SCP-4269 can trigger a fear reflex in beings of lesser intelligence. This reflex mostly occurs in wild animals, though in rare cases some humans. The reflex seems to be greatly multiplied by darkness, and will affect most humans severely when light levels reach 0.4 lux and below. Further tests involving neural oscillation readings have shown that while in absolute darkness, subjects in very close proximity to SCP-4269 suffer from an immediate and complete loss of brain function including the brainstem. These readings also seem to indicate that the cause of brain death is psychological, and not physical.

Addendum-042: During minor containment breach incident [REDACTED], facility wide power loss of main and backup systems occurred and the lights in SCP-4269’s chamber went off during maintenence. All 6 maintenance personnel inside SCP-4269’s chamber during this incident were declared deceased immediately. To avoid further incidents, backup power systems were installed locally and connected directly to SCP-4269’s chamber. Furthermore, personnel entering the chamber are now also required to carry high powered flashlights.

Addendum-069: Tests including adult non anomalous Emperor Penguins have shown that SCP-4269 does not attack its own kind, however the adult penguins were very visibly in distress, showing same signs of fear reflex as other subjects in close proximity to SCP-4269, even with lights at full power.
