Item #: SCP-5424
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5424 is to be kept in a locked box with a digital numeric pass code lock of no less than four numbers at Site-19 securely fastened inside a glass case with its aluminum rod free of coming into contact with any object. Approval from one Level 3 personnel is required before SCP-5424 is to be removed from its containment zone.
Description: SCP-5424 is a set of two attached plastic dials in a horizontal row, both resembling that of a standard wind up kitchen timer, with a 4-inch aluminum rod fastened to the back 0.5 centimetres in diameter. The left dial features two settings crudely written in black marker which read “Alive” and “Not Alive”. The dial on the right consists of 40 settings, with the label above reading “Power” written with the aforementioned marker. SCP-5424’s anomalous properties begin when touching either a sapient being or any object made up of regular matter with properties opposing SCP-5424’s “Alive/Not Alive” setting. With the “Alive” setting selected, any object made of standard matter coming into contact with the tip of SCP-5424 will immediately gain sentience and become an instance of SCP-5424-1. SCP-5424-1 instances gain the ability to audibly speak, see at a range of 80 degrees, and hear at a range of 30-70 decibels. Despite the aforesaid abilities, physical structure of SCP-5424-1 instances will not change in any way. Wechsler Intelligence Scale tests have concluded SCP-5424-1 instances have an IQ of approximately 70-110, relative to the setting of SCP-5424’s “Power” dial before contact is made. SCP-5424-1 instances are fully capable of forming opinions based on media, politics, and will even form bonds and share in-depth conversations with personnel interacting with it. Machine instances show expert level knowledge of their inner workings and can even perform their primary function without any source of power, while still remaining immobile. SCP-5424-1 instances show an intense amount of anxiety when informed they will be returned to their non-anomalous state, with several instances recorded as going through Kübler-Ross’ five stages of grief, leading some personnel to be hesitant in the process of removing sentience from the SCP-5424-1 instance. Previously sapient beings are unaffected upon contact while the “Alive” setting is selected regardless of “Power” setting. Corpses are unaffected by SCP-5424’s “Alive” setting.
When the “Not Alive” setting is selected, SCP-5424’s “Power” dial becomes irrelevant; any sapient being coming into contact with the tip of SCP-5424 will cease all muscle movements as though it has been “frozen in time” and will remain unresponsive unless the being comes into contact again with the rod and the “Alive” setting has been selected. Note that the subject will not decompose during this period. Subjects reanimated with SCP-5424 will retain all previous memories and characteristics, though the IQ of a subject can be increased or decreased with the “Power” setting
*Date of Recovery*
SCP-5424 was obtained at an abandoned high school in [REDACTED], Michigan on //2002 after a police officer failed to return after responding to an anonymous report of 4 people carrying assault weapons into -— High School. Foundation personnel became aware of an anomaly through a routine check of MIA officers and intercepted reinforcements via the guise of FBI intervention. MTF-Epsilon-6 apprehended a militia consisting of 24 members planning to overthrow the local government with aid from SCP-5424 to create Low-IQ sentient “bugs” that could be placed in places of interest to gather information and report back to the group, and military equipment capable of supplying the user real-time feedback during use. Levi --, Leader of the militia: “Knights of the New Age” claims to have created SCP-5424 though could not provide details. Further investigation deemed unnecessary. All members issued Class C and Class A amnestics and released.
