Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe (SCP-XXXX-A), Euclid (SCP-XXXX-B)

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX-A is to be kept in a locked strongbox of suitable material, placed in a secure and surveilled area. Access to SCP-XXXX-A requires explicit permission from Site Director.

SCP-XXXX-B is to be contained according to standard Human Detention Procedure B (as outlined in Memorandum 3223, published 10/12/1991), with the following modifications:

  • Under no circumstances should personnel allow SCP-XXXX-B to come into possession of any writing implement or any item which may be used as a writing implement.
  • Personnel interacting with SCP-XXXX-B are advised required to wear noise-canceling headphones, and may not engage the entity in conversation.

All personnel interacting extensively with SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B risk cognitohazard exposure, and are to be demoted to Class E if suspected of exposure. Exposed individuals are to be designated as SCP-XXXX-C instances, and contained under the same procedures as SCP-XXXX-B.

Description:
SCP-XXXX-A is a leather-bound book 15.24x22.86x2.29cm in size, with the title "Theories of Calculation" written in serif font on the spine. SCP-XXXX-A was printed in 18██ by H█████ B███████, but is believed to be a translation of an earlier work by the ancient mathematician █████████, itself annotated by 10th-century Arab scholar ███████. Despite Foundation investigation, no other copies have been found.

The book details various mathematical proofs in a format consistent with the era of publication, with printed diagrams and equations. The majority of the book's proofs are believed to be non-anomalous, until page ███, which begins a section titled "The Variable Kaph." Under the heading, the following equation is listed:

The variable at the far-right end of the equation is transcribed as the Pheonician symbol "Kaph." Due to the nature of SCP-XXXX-A, further investigation risks cognitohazard exposure: however, it is believed that the following paragraphs explain the equation, and how it may be solved to reveal the value of Kaph.

SCP-XXXX-B is ███████ ████████, a human male of Semitic ancestry, aged ██, originally born in the United Kingdom. It is believed that SCP-XXXX-B, in his role as mathematics teacher at █████████ University, acquired and read SCP-XXXX-A, exposing himself to cognitohazard.

The cognitohazard effects of SCP-XXXX are as follows:
Exposed individuals, such as SCP-XXXX-B and SCP-XXXX-C instances, exhibit extreme episodes of depression and mania, chronic insomnia, and an intense, overriding desire to "explain" the concept of Variable Kaph to anyone they encounter. These desires have, in the past, manifested in:

  • Assault and battery
  • Emotional manipulation through threats of suicide or self-harm
  • Extreme attempts to placate and "befriend" staff-members

Attempts at communication by SCP-XXXX-B and SCP-XXXX-C instances are to be heavily restricted.
