Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is tracked by the Foundation operatives assigned to Project Seeker Obelisk. It gives off a signal at [REDACTED] frequency, which is picked up by orbital satellites owned by the Foundation, allowing its movement to be under constant observation. Whenever SCP-XXXX teleports, it is tracked, and Foundation operatives are to be immediately dispatched to the area to contain any other anomalous items or entities in the proximity of SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX is not believed to be actively malicious, and deaths associated with SCP-XXXX are mostly related to its teleportation into popelated areas, or by abducted anomalies being “returned” by SCP-XXXX to their prior locations. Project “Seeker Obelisk” is the name for the ongoing research into SCP-XXXX.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is an obelisk composed of a superdense compound resistant to all forms of damage employed via testing by Foundation operatives. The obelisk stands 555ft (169.164m) above ground, the exact height of the Washington Monument, and has a completely smooth, nearly frictionless surface. The jet black stone absorbs almost all light, much like the vantablack(™) compound, making it difficult to visually perceive the object’s dimensions. It’s existence appears to repel mental categorization, making many laymen unable to perceive the object. However, Foundation operatives and other entities with extensive interaction with other SCPs do not have as much difficulty perceiving the obelisk or the intensely disorienting humming noise which many can hear when approaching within 15m of the object.
The obelisk teleports at random intervals, to random locations, always within 15km of other anomalies. No connection has been established between types of anomalies it “seeks”, which can be of any class, and range from whimsical to exceptionally dangerous. In approximately 11.2% of instances, no current anomaly can be located, though the presence of an anomaly prior to the obelisk’s arrival is assured in 97.3% of the instances.
Addendum:
SCP-XXXX was discovered in 1992 by Dr. Anton Kettle, a scientist not associated with the Foundation, who found SCP-XXXX via sonar at the bottom of the ocean when researching the extent of the reach of global pollution below 30m in the Atlantic Ocean. When it disappeared a week later, and then reappeared near to an anomaly in Siberia subsequently studied by the Foundation, a project was founded to understand the nature of the obelisk. The following are the note summaries of Dr. Philomina Worthington, Head of Project Obelisk for important discoveries regarding SCP-XXXX.
July 1992: SCP-XXXX is only mildly boggling to behold in person. Most of my team were able to see the object at a distance, except for Agent Kay Duncan, the newest member of the team. We began by testing who could view the object, and who could not, utilizing various D-Class. Most of the D-Class could not see the object, and attempted to change the subject when SCP-XXXX was directly pointed out to them except for a D-Class who had been previously assigned to several other Foundation locales. Our working hypothesis is that previous proximity to SCP anomalies alters the mind in such a way that it can accept the presence of SCP-XXXX.
Damage from around SCP-XXXX seems to be related to its sudden appearance in the area. Several tree limbs had been broken or crushed by the massive objects suddenly displacing all other items in the area. A great volume of displaced earth is also found around the base. We also observed one deer which had been cleaved in half by the arrival of SCP-XXXX.
At a distance of approximately 15m, an unnerving “hum” can be heard emanating from the object. This hum causes mild disorientation and nausea which lessens with repeated exposure. The hum is continual, and an expert is being brought to both record the sound, and research any messages or other anomalous properties of it.
Several attempts have been made to chip off even the smallest sample of the object for laboratory testing, to no avail. Industrial drills have been tried, as has acid, fire, pressure, and even gunfire. With authorization, we even tried both [REDACTED] and [REDACTED], neither of which produced even the smallest of results.
The base of the object is slightly wider than the top, which terminates in a four-sided pyramid typical of many obelisks. Due to the nearly frictionless nature of the object, it could not be climbed, so a crane was brought in, so that we could examine upper portions of the obelisk. No markings have been found on the obelisk, no discoloration, no tool marks. Digging has been done to attempt to observe the obelisk’s underside, but it was found to continue underneath the earth. Subterranean imaging tools have revealed that the obelisk is exactly the same size underneath the ground, terminating in a second four-sided pyramid approximately 555ft ( below the surface, making it’s true height 1110ft (338.328m).
February 1999: The object has teleported an average of approximately 12.14 times per year since the initial discovery. Most of the time, another anomaly can be found within ten miles of the obelisk once it teleports. There is no observable interaction with the other anomalies when it teleports, though regrettably some data was lost due to initial attempts to track SCP-XXXX failing. It became “lost” several times before the Foundation managed to utilize satellites to accurately pick up on the signal at [REDACTED] frequency globally.
Because SCP-XXXX doesn’t appear to be hostile, and because over 90% of teleportations result in little damage and no casualties, attempts at containment have been terminated. Eight human casualties and numerous animal casualties have occurred due to the living beings sustaining damage by being located at the incoming teleportation site. SCP-XXXX or its operators appear to prefer teleporting to remote areas and seems to actively avoid urban landscapes when possible. Despite the obelisk always teleporting within 10 miles of another anomaly, it has not teleported near any Foundation facility, nor any other known facility engaged in the research, handling, acquisition, or destruction of anomalies. This has led to a theory that it is only interested in “undiscovered” anomalies, though how it knows whether an anomaly has been discovered by various organizations is yet unknown.
Nonetheless, this makes SCP-XXXX useful in locating new anomalies which need to be contained. For the safety of Project Seeker Obelisk, a protocol has been instituted such that travel to the new teleportation site is not undertaken by Project Seeker Obelisk’s operatives until the new anomaly is contained.
There is some worry that other organizations will notice and begin to track SCP-XXXX on their own, which could lead to continual battles at the site of new anomalies with organizations inimical to the Foundation. For the moment, however, it is believed that only the Foundation has the equipment necessary to track the emitted frequency, so this particular aspect of SCP-XXXX will be kept at a higher clearance.
It should be noted that there have been eight occasions wherein SCP-XXXX has teleported, and subsequently the nearby anomaly has gone missing. In several instances, the exact second of the teleportation matches the disappearance of the nearby anomaly. Two of the anomalous objects have since returned, both in poor condition and no longer exhibiting the anomalous properties witnessed prior to their disappearance.
The current theory is that SCP-XXXX teleports “chosen” anomalies away. So far, there is no real pattern to the types of anomalies “chosen” to be taken. They have been of varying levels of danger, and varying levels of containment class.
March 2017: In February of this year, one of the anomalies teleported away by SCP-XXXX during 2009 was returned, and it is the first one which has been returned alive. This anomaly, now believed to be powerless, is categorized as SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1 has since died in an apparent suicide, despite being under intermittent surveillance by Project Seeker Obelisk staff. Appended to this document is the written testimony of SCP-XXXX-1, who would not submit to an interview, stating that ‘straight questions and answers could not properly convey the experience’ and that he, ‘believed linear conversations to be a potentially dangerous habit we should all abstain from in the future’.
