Item #: SCP-4082

Object Class: Safe Keter Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-4082 is to kept in a guarded anomalous object containment cell in site-19. Any personnel that wish to test SCP-4082 must gain approval from the 05 Council and be accompanied by personnel with Clearance Level 5 or higher.

In the case of containment breach, fire is permitted to be used on instances of SCP-4082-3. After containment breach, instances of 4082-2 must be captured and contained. After the subject expires, the cap may be retrieved by personnel with a Memetic Resistance level of 19.5. If a member of personnel with such Memetic Resistance is not present, a drone may be used for
retrieval, however pilot must have a Memetic Resistance Level of 14.5.

If there are no personnel meeting these requirements available, the hat may be retrieved by personnel with Clearance Level 5 or higher, as long as the retriever is given Class-D Amnestics. Subject is to be monitored by Site Medical Staff, and another armed guard is to be place outside SCP-4082's cell. In the case of an attempted breach, lethal force is permitted.

Description: SCP-4082 is a newsboy cap dating back to 1893. A tag inside says "Manufactured by the William and James Co.". The fabric is an unknown material that closely resembles tweed cloth, however it is described to feel like silk. SCP-4082 also appears to be water proof, staying completely dry even when completely submerged in water. It also appears to be fireproof, unlike the other caps it creates. Requests to test other resistances are pending.
SCP-4082's anomalous effects will not manifest until it is placed on a person's head, hereby known as 4082-1. When this is done, 4082-1 will be unable to remove the hat. Over the next 30-60 days, the subject will begin to hear a voice, usually beginning as a whisper and advancing into a standard tone of voice. The voice is described as being very friendly and persuasive.
After a week, the subject will begin to request materials. These materials usually include cloth, usually tweed cloth, thread, and needle. Other materials include cotton, wool, and polyester. The subject will then begin to stitch other newsboy caps, taking a break every 12 caps. A total of 36 caps are made a day.
After a month, subject will lose partial control over body, and the voice goes silent. The cap count increases to 24 caps. A total of 72 caps are made a day.
After 3 months, subject loses complete control of body and caps are made without stopping. The least amount of caps within a 3 month period made came out to be 1,245. The most was 4,082.
The subject will persist without food, water, or sleep for 6 months. The normal human body will only last 10 days without sleep, 4 to 6 weeks without food, and around 3 to 5 days without water.
Once 4082-1 expires, the cap will be removable. Anyone who walks in and picks it up afterwards will begin to hear whispers, even if they do not put it on. This subject will hereby be known as 4082-2. 4082-2 will continue to hear the voices, even when miles away from the cap. The subject will then begin to hunt down the cap until they find it, often going without food or water. Once found, the subject will put it on, and begin spreading the other caps made by 4082-1 to nearby people, who will now be called 4082-3. 4082-2's eyes become Navy Blue with Gold Specks.
4082-3 will not hear voices, rather they will be offered the cap by 4082-2. If 4082-3 accepts, 4082-2 will give them the hat. If the subject rejects the offer, 4082-2 will then force the cap on the head of the subject. When the cap is put on, forcefully or willingly, 4082-3 will lose complete control of their body, and their eyes will change color. The colors are listed below:

Red Eyes - Red eyed instances of 4082-3 are known as "Hunters". Hunters are told by Scouts who has a hat and who does not. The Hunter will then search for the person. Once found, they will force the cap on the subject's head.
Violet Eyes - Violet eyed instanced of 4082-3 are known as "Tailors". Tailors are provided materials to make more caps, usually out of fabrics, however other materials have been used in the case of a shortage, such as the subject's own skin. When the subject's skin is used, the subject will eventually die, and a hunter will collect the cap until another target is provided by Scouts.
Orange Eyes - Orange eyed instances of 4082-3 are known as "Shepherds". Shepherds will look for animals, usually sheep, and begin harvesting their fur for materials. They will also harvest plants, usually cotton or hemp. Most Shepherds are farmers, however other subjects can be shepherds if no farmers are nearby. In rare cases of a material shortage, they will gather people and begin to harvest their skin for material. Usually this is when a non-assimilated population gets too low.
Neon Green Eyes - Neon Green eyed instances of 4082-3 are known as "Scouts". Scouts will search for people who do not have a cap and will report to Hunters. How the Scouts communicate to the hunters is unknown.
Amber Eyes - Amber eyed instances of 4082-3 are known as "Nomads". Nomads will leave the current population once the whole population has been assimilated. Nomads are chosen from the populations of Hunters and Scouts. The chosen few will be provided 5 caps and will be sent off into the world. From here, the subject will follow roads until they find a nearby town or city where they can disperse the caps given. Amber eyed instances of 4082-3 will hitchhike, often accepting rides from those who offer. Oddly enough, the subject will not give a cap to the driver or any other passengers inside. They will often stay with the subjects until they reach their destination.

Discovery - SCP-4082 was discovered in ███████, Maine after many reports of a small coastal town populated by people wearing "Newsy/News Boy/Casual-Wear caps" with "odd-colored eyes" and "violent tendencies". Many people spotted in the town were reported as missing. The Foundation sent Agent █████ to investigate. Agent █████ didn't return and wasn't responding to any calls. Multiple other agents were sent out to investigate with the same result. MTF Epsilon-6 was deployed and reported what was described as "A mob of red and green-eyed subjects in newsboy caps gone mad". The Foundation was unable to remove the hats. Multiple attempts to avoid harming civilians were attempted, but non worked. The Foundation then approved lethal means of containment. Attempts to kill the subjects with any ballistics round proved fruitless. Larger weapons were then approved, such as explosive devices. While the subjects remained unharmed by the initial blast, the resulting fire did work. The Foundation then sent out an early version MTF Epsilon-9 (This was possible thanks to the creation of the Flame Thrower). MTF Epsilon-9 incinerated all instances of SCP-4082-3. A survey of the town showed all inhabitants had been assimilated. There were no survivors.
4082-2 was found in a nearby lighthouse on the top floor. 4082-2 was found in a nearby lighthouse dead. Autopsy showed the subject died of Dehydration. Retrieval of SCP-4082 was attempted, but failed after Agent ████████ grabbed the cap and heard voices, telling him to put it on. After putting it on, attempts to remove SCP-4082 failed until Agent ████████ died approximately six months later in containment. The cap was then put into a proper containment cell by researcher Dr.███████. Soon after, he attempted to steal the cap. SCP-4082 was transferred multiple times due to containment breaches, eventually arriving to Site-98 in ████████, Japan. Here, multiple tests were ran on SCP-4082 until another containment breach occurred. See Incident 4082-Beta.
