Nicholas32704's SCP-001 Proposal: "The Red Mist"
Item #: SCP-001
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: The ocean where SCP-001's anomalous properties are contained is to be monitored at all times. MTF Gamma 6 "Deep Feeders" are to ward off any ongoing sea traffic from the area.
In the event of an SCP-001 REM sleep cycle, site personnel are prohibited from interfering and interacting with anything, and are only required to observe the event. Upon pinpointing who SCP-001.4 is, they are to be tracked down and exterminated to prevent an SCP-001.5 event. Class-A amnestics are to be administered to any witnesses.
Subjects exposed to SCP-001's REM sleep cycle are to be tracked down, interviewed for details relating to their encounter with SCP-001 (in the case that SCP-001.4 is unidentified), and then administered Class-B amnestics to prevent the anomaly's "red zone" from further growing.
Infected SCP-001.5 personell are to be exterminated as soon as possible. If they are reported to have gone missing near any body of water, they are to be declared dead, with cause of death being labeled as drowning, and the closest body of water larger than five (5) acres from where they vanished in is to be locked off and quarantined. Should they re-emerge, MTF Beta 7 "Maz Hatters" are to be sent to exterminate the entity (and/or entities). Upon exterminating SCP-001.5, the body is to be cremated, and the body of water is to be open to the public once again. Class-B amnestics are to be given to any witnesses of the event.
Description: SCP-001 is an anomalous area located within the ██████ Ocean. SCP-001's properties occur every fourty-eight (48) hours, wherein a completely random subject abruptly goes into REM sleep for sixty (60) minutes before re-awakening.
Subjects who are interviewed report that they experience a dream, wherein they start by standing on a raft over an ocean during the nighttime. Their friends within the dream, which have been designated as SCP-001.1, then beckon the subject to join them in a 1940s-era submarine with a length of twelve (12) meters, hereby refered to as SCP-001.2. If the offer is declined, SCP-001.1 instances will attempt to lure the subject with personal childhood objects. If the offer is declined once more, SCP-001.1 instances will become aggressive and force the subject into SCP-001.2.
The interior of SCP-001.2 is described as looking "home-made" and rough, with plastic plates, bowls and utensils composing the submarine's machinery and control module, flashlights taped to the ceiling as a primary light source, and blankets, pillows and carpet composing the rest of the living space. Subjects report that even more childhood objects are used as decorations inside the submarine.
Upon entering SCP-001.2, it slowly descends into the water for approximately 30 minutes. Subjects do not report any feelings of water pressure as the submarine descends. SCP-001.1 instances will begin to communicate with the subject, often bringing up a topic relating to finding "the red mist." Subjects report witnessing aquatic lifeforms such as fish, sharks and whales outside the windows of SCP-001.2, although as the submarine descends deeper and deeper, these entities slowly become more and more abstract and deformed.
Eventually, subjects encounter a large, cloudy mass of reddish-brown fluid near the bottom of the water, labeled as SCP-001's "red zone." Upon SCP-001.2 descending further into the fluid, subjects report witnessing entities that include grotesquely deformed human corpses, animal carcasses, [REDACTED], and eventually an enourmous humanoid head, which has been designated as SCP-001.3.
SCP-001.3's appearance always varies, although subjects exposed to the entity consistently report the facial structure to be rotting and deformed in some way, along with the following details:
- The "hair" of SCP-001.3 is incredibly dense and long, and appears as if it has fallen out in some areas.
- The "jaw" of SCP-001.3 is ripped and unnaturally extended open, exposing a lengthy rotting tongue and a mouth full of destroyed and missing teeth.
- The "eyes" of SCP-001.3 are incredibly small and sunken into their "eyesockets."
- The "neck" of SCP-001.3 extends downwards for an undetermined length, with visible gashes and holes exposing nerves and veins.
Subjects report that upon witnessing the entity, all instances of SCP-001.1 become extremely distressed, with the one exception, designated as SCP-001.4, expressing fascination and awe.
Several minutes after encountering SCP-001.3, SCP-001.2 will cease functionality, and its "hatch" will open, flooding the interior with the red liquid. Subjects report that they were required to swim upwards with the SCP-001.1 instances in order to escape, with an intense feeling of suffocation and need for oxygen accompanying them.
Upon reaching the surface, subjects report that before waking up from REM sleep, the instance of SCP-001.4 is nowhere to be found.
Soon after subjects complete SCP-001's dream cycle, the person of whom SCP-001.4's appearance was based on will become infected, now designated as an SCP-001.5 instance. No known cure currently exists for this infection. Upon SCP-001.5 entering any body of water, they will vanish until another instance of SCP-001's REM dream cycle occurs, wherein they will re-emerge from the closest body of water that is at least five (5) miles in radius from the original body of water they vanished in, as a [REDACTED], lacking any upper brain functions and attempting to drag any human beings they can obtain into the body of water with them. Should the entity succeed in this, it will vanish under the surface of the water and re-emerge fourty-eight (48) seconds later and repeat the cycle.
For every human that SCP-001.5 drags underwater, the size of SCP-001's "red zone" expands another thirty-five (35) meters in length. Dr. ███, lead director of SCP-001 containment, predicts that if this were to keep happening, SCP-001's "red zone" would eventually occupy the entire ocean, resulting in an XK End-of-the-World scenario.
Addendum 001.1: Reports of missing divers and marine biologists, along with an increase of SCP-001.5 incidents on the ████ shore, had lead site personnel to discover SCP-001's origin point to be within the physical world, located in the ██████ Ocean. MTF Gamma 6 "Deep Feeders" was then sent to patrol the area 24/7 to ensure no further casualties ensue.
Addendum 001.2: Certain properties of SCP-001.3 are memetic in nature. If subjects exposed to SCP-001 are not treated with Class-B amnestics before falling asleep again, they will enter another one of the anomaly's REM sleep cycles. Read Interview Log 001.3 for details.
Addendum 001.3: Physical contact with SCP-001.2, along with physical contact with SCP-001.3's "red zone," result in immediate decomposition and cardiac arrest for any personnel other than subjects experiencing SCP-001's REM sleep cycle, and is strictly prohibited as result. View Video Log 001.2 for details.
Addendum 001.4: The ocean floor of SCP-001's containment zone is covered in a plethora of carcasses, bones and flesh of marine life and [REDACTED].
Addendum 001.5: SCP-001's "red zone" extends to the ocean floor, into an abyssal crater with a radius of 40 meters. Currently no site personnel can determine how deep the crater goes.
Video Log 001.2:
(Site personell explores the ocean aroujd SCP-001's red zone and accidentally collides with the submarine, decaying rapidly and falling down into the red zone. Video ends with seeing SCP-001.3's head.)
Interview Log 001.3:
Interviewed: Laura ████, age 15
Interviewer: Dr. ███
Foreword: Site personnel conducted an experiment to study what would happen if subjects exposed to SCP-001 are not given amnestics. Laura had went into REM sleep and dreamt of descending the █████ Lake with three (3) instances of SCP-001.1, including her friends Kyle, Dan, and Rebecca. Soon after, Dan had been reported missing. That night, Laura had went into REM sleep again. Site director Dr. ███ then found Laura's whereabouts and conducted an interview with her.
<Begin Log>
Dr. ███: I want you to tell me about the dream you had last night.
Laura: (sigh) It was the same one as the one I had last night. Everything from the submarine, my friends giving me my old stuffed lion toy, going down underwater and seeing the face in the red mist.
Dr. ███: Go on.
Laura: Dan wasn't in the dream, though. Instead, there was a dead body. It was horrific.
Dr. ███: What did the body look like?
Laura: Its neck was stretched, his nose was gone. Jesus, most of his legs were just bone. I think he was missing an eye too. And his tongue…
Dr. ███: What happened when you entered the red mist in the water.
Laura: It was the same as the dream before. Everything got all black, I saw the diver bodies and animals. There was even a whale. Then I heard that roar like last time and, and-
*Laura takes a few deep breaths and attempt to calm herself.*
Dr. ███: What did you see?
Laura: It was Dan's face. It was all ripped up and shit and he was so fucking *destroyed.*
Dr. ███: I see. What happened when the submarine hatch opened.
Laura: The blood water started to burn me, and I heard the roar again. All I knew I had to do was swim out if there as fast as I could, but then…
Dr. ███: What?
Laura: The body sprung back to live and followed me underwater. I couldn't breathe and the surface was miles above me but I couldn't wake up at all and that thing was trying to pull me back down.
Dr. ███: What happened after that?
Laura: (looks down, eyes closed) I looked down, and that's when I saw… *more* of those heads. Below Dan's head were all these other ones. Kids, teens, adults, old guys, I think I even saw a fucking *baby.* Each one was full of infection and mold and barnacle and shit like that, but then, as I looked further down, I saw a skull. Just a featureless, emotionless, human skull with no skin or meat on it at all. That's when I realized…
Dr. ███: What did you realize?
Laura: (opens eyes) It was my skull.
The body was dragging me towards it…
Then I woke up.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: 3 hours later, Laura had been reported missing, last seen in her own bathroom. Even 48 hours later, Laura had not reemerged at all. Class-B amnestics have since been permanentally assigned to be administered to subjects at all times.
Soon Afterwards, MTF "deep feeders" reported that SCP-001's "red zone" had grown 25 meters in radius.
Note: "Every 2 days that submarine descends into that red mist and chooses its next victim. Every time it happens we have 2 short days to find the whereabouts of the people who are in it, and if we're quick enough, we can exterminate the guy who's infected.
"But if we're too late, they're gonna show up as one of those deformed zombie things and drag as many people as it can with them. If we're too late, one of them is gonna fall asleep again and become lost forever. If we're too late, that red mist is gonna keep getting bigger and bigger to make room for whatever godawful thing is in there, until eventually it will take up the entire ocean, and who knows what the fuck will happen then.
"Every 48 hours, someone is randomly selected to be taken, and when they come back, every 48 seconds it will take someone with them. We have to keep track of all the people who enter the submarine. We have to keep finding and exterminating all of its offspring it sends to drag with them.
"We have to keep giving the people amnestics so they won't be selected by another dream. The severe increase in population on Earth helps to an extent, because there's just no way the thing can drag all of us in with it, but if the red zone keeps getting bigger and bigger, I think we may be approaching an XK-End-of-the-World scenario a whole lot sooner than I'm comfortable with." - Dr. ███, 8/17/1█
