The Mentorship Program

Helping today's newbies become tomorrow's heavy hitters!

The Goal

Pair new authors with veteran authors so the newbies can learn how to write a successful article.

For sake of clarity, the definitions of newbies and veterans are available below.

Newbie	Veteran
Writers who have one or less successful article (SCP/GoI Format) or have been members of the Wiki for less than 90 days.	Writers who have been on the site for some time and have six articles with a high average rating.

What This Is

An opportunity to build relationships within the community and allow for newbies to learn how one crafts a successful article. Co-authoring with an experienced vet allows for more eyes to land on a newcomer's work and will hopefully establish a dedicated readership anticipating more from them.

If you're reading this, that must mean you're either relatively new around here or are new to writing articles. Either way, we're glad to have you!

In order to enter the program, you'll need to fill out this lovely little form and reply to the thread with it. If you don't fully grasp what to put in there, don't worry. I'll break it down for you in just a bit.

IDEA THREAD LINK

This one is pretty simple. Just replace the link with a link to your own idea thread. You don't have to change 'Click Me!' to anything, that's just the text that will appear as a hyperlink. Like this! Make sure you specify which tab (if any) your draft is on.

ABOUT THE IDEA

Again, pretty straightforward. Type two or three sentences about your concept. What's the idea? What story are you looking to tell? Consider this your elevator pitch. Please be mindful and keep it brief!

TIME ZONE

Being on the same or near time zones as your co-author definitely helps. If you don't know your time zone, google is your friend.

What's the easiest way to reach you online? Most users prefer IRC and Wikidot Private Messages, but others may be more open to Discord, Skype, carrier pigeon, and even smoke signals. You don't need to include links to reach you here (privacy is important!) just the name of your preferred platform(s).

Tell us about you! What do you like? Some hobbies? Maybe your favorite SCP or GoI? Anything you feel like sharing here! This section is designed to allow you to find an author with mutual interests as to avoid awkward 'ums' and 'uhs' between writing. We're hoping that you won't just become co-authors, but friends too.

  Hi! I really like writing weird, whimsical anomalies. I don't really have a favorite SCP, but my favorite GoI is Wilson's Wildlife Solutions. I love how their stories are typically about ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances.

OKAY, BUT NOW WHAT?

Now you wait! If your draft, idea, or even interests and personality are liked by a veteran, they'll be in contact with you. But keep in mind that the forums sometimes move slowly and your draft may not be the most interesting. If you find yourself having difficulty attracting interest, I suggest you brainstorm in the appropriate forum.
Who knows; you may even come up with an idea so good you won't want to share it!

A FINAL WORD

In preparation of your (hopefully!) up and coming collab, you should check out Zyn's essay on co-authoring. It will tell you what to expect, some tips, and how to get the ball rolling. Keep in mind that your partner also has a real life so don't expect them to be around 24/7. Similarly, if you're not going to be around for a few days, it's always polite to let them know!

Another thing, you are not guaranteed to be picked by a veteran. Please understand that if you post here, you are vying for a chance to be selected. That means it's in your best interest to put forth your best draft!

+ For the Veterans

Hiya! If you're reading this, you're likely no stranger to writing and would also like to help some newcomers. That's great! But before we all get excited, we've got to lay a very important rule.

Do NOT take over the draft. - This is very important. You are here to mentor your partner on how to succeed on the wiki. You are here to share your knowledge and insight, not simply take their draft and polish it on your own. Yes, this may be frustrating. Yes, this may take time. But at the end of the day, the Wiki will come out a better place for it. As the nice header of this title says; "today's newbies become tomorrow's heavy hitters!"

With that out of the way, let's get into some questions you may be asking.

Why should I do this?

The Idea

How often have you seen an article posted with a very cool and interesting concept, but lacking proper execution? This is your chance to take that idea and help it shine its brightest.

The Cool Factor

When I was first starting out on the Wiki it was my dream to collab with big names. Imagine being a newcomer to the site and having a popular author reaching out to you and being interested in your idea, and working together on it. Now take that high and make it into a reality.

The Wiki

At the end of the day, we're all just a bunch of nerds who write spooky spaghetties. As members of the community, we should be inviting newcomers with open arms and helping them learn the ropes. Think of it as an investment in the future of the wiki.

Who Can Apply

All vets will be vetted by CO Team to check the following:

1- Your behavior on the Forums/IRC

• Pretty much just making sure you're not a huge dick. If you have a history of being rude, then it's pretty likely your partner won't have a good time writing with you.
• This will be handled by a quick O5 thread lookup, for those curious.

2- The quality of your articles.

• If you have five articles up but they're all at single digit upvotes, there's a pretty good chance you might not have a good grip on what you're doing. Either that, or you absolutely suck at plugging.
• This doesn't mean you need to have articles at +100, We want to make sure the newbies are getting someone who knows what's up.

How to Apply

Easy. Just shoot me a PM, preferably with your scpper page linked and let us know you're interested in this project.

What Next?

The application period for veterans will be open for a week or until [ARBITRARY NUMBER HERE] apply and are accepted, whichever comes first. After that, the newbie application period will begin and you can have your pick of the litter. Just make sure you comment on their post letting them know you're interested and PM me after contact has been established. Once the ball is rolling, try and be available for your newbie. IRL happens and we get that, but this is supposed to be a collab, so try not to disappear for days at a time without at least a warning.

For Both

Once a pair has been established, the involved parties will have 5 weeks to produce an article. As the participating newbies are required to present a draft, this should be more than enough time to allow for whatever esoteric nonsense life may throw at you two to run its course and still have time to produce a good end product. If something happens which renders you completely unable to continue in this, we understand. All we ask is you please let me know as soon as possible.

What This Is Not

This is not a 'Save My Draft' thread. Vets are not expected to completely take over the project, but instead, offer advice on how to improve concepts, obtain critique (and implement it!), etc. This is may start out rough, but through teamwork and communication, We hope both authors can be proud of the work done.
