SCP-XXXX in its inactive state

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: A parameter of six kilometers is to be guarded by 2 armed aquatic research vessels. The vessels’ primary location is to be outside of the ‘Yellow Zone’ and intersect any unauthorized ships within 13 nautical miles. No fewer than 30 functioning trail cameras are to be stationed along the island with 4 along the east and west cliffs, 2 on the cove’s beach, 2 outside of the research building, and 22 throughout marked points upon the island with the majority facing man-made trails, the beaches, and the sea. A team including a clearance level 3 researcher, marine biologist, oceanographer, and 3 researchers are to be staffed at all times at the research site stationed near the center of the island. 4 armed guards are to be stationed on the shore of SCP-XXXX. The staff is to be rotated with new personnel every six months with a renewal of supplies. This rotation cannot fall between the 20th and 25th day of SCP-XXX last active status.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a cove located off of the coast of ███ ███████ on a small island that is approximately ██ kilometers in length and built of mostly cliff faces and forests. SCP-XXXX’s beach is approximately 1.6 kilometers in length with the surrounding cliffs ranging from 4 to 30 meters high with the tallest settled on both sides of the beach. The waters off of SCP-XXXX’s beach have been mapped into two sections with these being the ‘Red Zone’ and the ‘Yellow Zone’. The ‘Yellow Zone’ spans outward of approximately 30 kilometers from the edges of SCP-XXXX’s beach and goes out as far as nearly ██ kilometers out to sea and 2 kilometers inland. The ‘Red Zone’ spans the length of SCP-XXXX’s beach and is currently unknown how far this zone spans out to sea.

These zones only display their anomalous features for a span of 24 hours after day 24 of its ‘inactive’ state. During the ‘active’ state, all electronics, machinery, and other man-made equipment including navigation devices will begin to experience malfunctions and incorrect readings. Within 15 kilometers of the ‘Red Zone’, living organism including humans subjects will begin to experience disorientation, nausea, hallucinations, and paranoia leading to potential violent actions to others, themselves, and their equipment. This same reaction also seems to have an effect along the cliffs adjacent to SCP-XXXX’s beach higher than 5 meters up. The ‘Red Zone’s full anomalous effects are currently unknown due to lack of successful recordings, but always results in total engine failure and the sinking of sea vessels. This has lead to a loss of all aerial and sea vessel transportation that have entered into the ‘Red Zone’.

SCP-XXXX has two states that its anomalous features are classified as, ‘active’ and ‘inactive’. During the ‘inactive’ state, SCP-XXXX shows no anomalous properties and will appear as a normal island cove. This state of inactivity will span over 24 days. On day 25, SCP-XXXX begins its ‘active’ state at 0:00 where the seawater within the ‘Red Zone’ will begin to recede and uncover a maze-like structure composed of rock, different species of coral, and an unidentified coral-like component with luminescent properties that come in a deep purple, yellow, and blue color. The exposed seabed is also vastly different in comparison with new usual geological structures and a lack of expected remnants of seashells, debris, and stranded marine life. Along with the new structural formation of the maze, the seabed also slopes downward at a roughly 10-degree angle with no drop where the usual shelf normally ends. As of this time, it is unknown how deep the maze extends and if there are any changes in its slope degree.

Outside of the ‘Red Zone’, the seawater still remains at its usual state defying normally displayed physics and current understanding of gravity, thus creating a form of ‘wall of water’ along both sides of the maze. Waves and tides have even been observed along with marine life thriving as usual.

Due to the decline of the sloped ground of the ‘Red Zone’, its wall of seawater at each side increases in measurement and is thought to be a contribution the dimming of light observed as the maze reaches a lower depth. This, however does not explain the cause of the maze being unviewable with a ‘black haze’ filling its place along the visible horizon and its reasoning is still unknown.

Recorded explorations have brought some insight to the structure of the ‘Red Zone’ from within. Though recording devices and radio along with basic electronics and equipment seemed to function without issue, other more complicated devices and any form of image capturing from within the maze has resulted in failure. It’s currently unknown why this is and the reasoning for the differences. These exploration logs are attached at the bottom.

Addendum: As of the result of exploration #3, no exploration teams are to travel deeper than ██ kilometers into the maze.
As of now, all exploration teams are to exit the maze fully by 23:00 during SCP-XXXX’s active state.

Exploration Log 1

December 16,20██. The first exploration since SCP-XXXX’s discovery is held. At 00:00 on day 25 of the last active state, the seawater began to recede and the structure of the ‘Red Zone’ began to come into view. It took an hour for the water to recede out of sight. At 01:13, D-8043 is sent into the carrying a hiking backpack equipped with a standard issue flashlight, a day’s worth of provisions, a standard recording device that would automatically backup any recordings made on the research computers, a standard radio, two watches, and extra batteries.
Despite the effects the two zones cause to electronics and living organisms, entering into the ‘Red Zone’ through the maze structure seems to negate them and allows for further study to take place within the ‘Red Zone’. With this in mind, D-8043 will explore into the maze for a duration of 10 hours with 30 minute breaks every 2 hours while within the ‘Red Zone’. The research team dubbed as ‘Home Base’ during these explorations are stationed at the main facility located outside of SCP-XXXX.

03:00
B: “D-8043, it is the two-hour mark of your exploration start. Please report in.”

D: “Yeah. Ok, so pretty much it’s just sand, rocks, and coral? I dunno what these things are, but they glow and shit. Anyway, the water walls or whatever they are, they're kinda freaking me out. I ain’t gonna lie doc.”

B: “Noted. Are there any changes to your surroundings since entering?”

D: “Aside from what I already said? Not much actually. It’s winding in here, though. I dunno how many dead ends I’ve hit, but I’ve been recording like you guys told me and mapped out where I’ve been so far.”

*crunching from a granola bar can be heard*

B: “We’ve received the data transferred from your recordings and are currently having a map drawn based off of the information that you have provided. Continue with your break and begin your exploration again at the marked time.”

D: “Gotcha.”

From the continued time of 03:30 through 10:00, D-8043 reports back on structures that make up the maze and different pathways, their locations, and branch offs. During the extent of this time, no other living organisms of natural or anomalous properties are encountered. D-8043’s only extra noting outside of the structure of the maze is that of the fading light. From 09:36 to the current recording, all natural light has begun to fade within the maze despite the sun coming to its highest point in the day and there being no notable ceiling or structure covering the maze. Despite this, the glow of the unidentified coral seems to make up for the lack of other natural light, resulting in D-8043 to save the use of artificial lighting.

10:30
B: “We have reached the max time target of exploration into SCP-XXX. Please state your current findings and then proceed to make your way back towards the exit of the maze.”

D: “It’s about time… Ok, so pretty much, I haven’t came across anything weird outside of the build of this place other than the fact that it seems the darkness doesn’t increase over time. So if I gotta guess, I’m gonna have to say that it’s gotta be somethin’ blockin’ the light. I mean, I can faintly see the sky? Maybe it’s due to how deep I am? I donno. I don’t really understand any of this shit.”

B: “Noted. We’ve recorded your progress and made marks of interest upon our map. You may proceed to taking your break and then exiting the structure.”

D: …

B: “D-8043?”

D: “You know, I actually think I’ll just go ahead and start leavin. I still have plenty of energy and I’m not tired yet.”

B: “Is everything alright?”

D: “Yeah… I just wanna get out.”

D-8043 proceeded to exit the maze using the map he had recorded along with the aid of home base. During the duration of his leave, he only took two 30 minute breaks while mentioning that he simply ‘wanted to leave due to an uneasy feeling’. At 18: 43, D-8043 successfully exited the maze with no notable effects from SCP-XXXX. All recordings are taken along with some samples taken from the maze by D-8043. At 23:00, SCP-XXXX began to refill with water. At 00:00, SCP-XXXX goes into it’s ‘inactive’ state.
The samples taken from SCP-XXXX show no anomalous properties except for a two-inch sample of the unidentified coral that showed [REDACTED]. The map from D-8043 is marked out and is to be used in further explorations.

Exploration Log 2
October ██, 20██, D-7932 is equipped with a standard issue flashlight, a day’s worth of provisions, a standard recording device, a standard radio, two watches, extra batteries, and a map of the currently charted ‘Red Zone’. The subject is to travel for a duration of 10 hours with a 30 minute break every 2 hours. With the map, it is hopeful that he will be able to venture further and embed a tracker into the sand at the turning point of his travel. At 00:00, the water begins to recede with D-7932 able to enter at 01:10.

03:00
B: “It has been two hours since you have entered into the maze. Can you please state your current whereabouts along with your current surroundings.”

D: “Sure. I’m still in region 1 and all I see are the rocks and coral walls, only they keep getting taller the deeper I go in.”

B: “Understood. And has the lighting of your surroundings changed?”

D: “No.”

B: “Very good. Take your break and then proceed.”

D-7932 had passed the previous mark that D-8043 had originally first reported back by roughly █ kilometers due to the success of navigation through the maze. It takes the subject almost less than half the time to reach D-8043’s final mark on the map with matching changes and notes throughout the exploration.

06:48
D: “Alright, doc. I’ve reached the end of my map. Do I, like, continue or…?”

B: “Yes, but please embed the tracker into the sand firmly before continuing.”

D: “Yeah, alright…”
*Sounds of sand shifting and the placing of the tracker is heard.*
D: “Ok, it’s in.

B: “Excellent. You may proceed further, and make sure that you record your steps and findings so we can continue to chart the area.”

D: “Yeah…”

B: “Is everything ok?”

D: “Yeah, everything is fine…”
*slight mumbling before the radio feed is cut*

08:00
D: “Ok, so it’s break time and there is no light down here other than the glowing coral. I mean, I don’t think I need my flashlight or anything just to walk and navigate, but the sky just looks black. I’m really uneasy out here right now…”

B: “Calm down, now. Can you tell us what you can observe around you?”

D: “Yeah, basically the same shit I’ve seen the entire time I’ve been here. Look, I know nothing has changed and I frankly haven’t even seen anything in here, but something doesn’t feel right. I don’t know. Like, I don’t feel I’m in any danger or anything, but I feel like…something is here… Like I’m being watched from a distance. Maybe it’s just the dark. Anyway, I’m gonna take my breather and continue…”

B: “Just try to gather your thoughts during your break. Please report in if anything changes.”

10:26
D: “I hear something…”

B: “Explain?”

D: “I dunno…it’s really far away, but I hear this…deep wailing sound. It sounds like something out of a fucking horror movie, but I can’t really tell where it is. Oh fuck… What is that? Do you guys hear that too?”

B: “We do not, but attempt to record it and proceed with caution.”

D: “Fuck…yeah, yeah alright…I think it's…that way? Ok, yeah it’s that way, so I’m gonna head down this path…like…shit what if there’s some dangerous animal or something out here?”

B: “I can assure you everything is fine. Just proceed with caution.”

10:45
D: [Inaudible]
*D-7932 is heard, but is talking too fast and is muffled out of panic. Along with the subject’s frantic voice, a loud, unidentified wailing can be heard along with multiple other voices.

B: “D-7932, can you tell us what is going on?”

D: [Inaudible]

B: “I’m sorry, but your feed isn’t coming in clearly. Please try to speak more directly into the radio.”

The feed continues to be untranslatable with the wailing and voices becoming louder. Eventually, D-7932 can be heard screaming before the feed cuts completely. Home Base is unable to reconnect the feed and D-7932 is declared unrecoverable when SCP-XXXX returns to it’s ‘inactive’ state. The tracker that D-7932 had planted was unable to be retrieved, as the signal from the tracker was picked up among vastly different locations extend as far as [REDACTED] before suddenly [REDACTED]. There will be no missions to retrieve the tracker.

Exploration Log 3

January ██, 20██, D-2160 is equipped with a standard issue flashlight, three day’s worth of provisions, a small pistol locked inside of a protective case for self-defense, a standard recording device, a standard radio, two watches, extra batteries, and an updated map of the ‘Red Zone’ carried within a hiking backpack. They are ordered to not open the backpack until their first break due to the weapon carried within. D-2160 is to travel for the duration of SCP-XXXX’s active state with a 1-hour break every 4 hours. This exploration is to try to uncover what D-7932 may have encountered along with study the behaviour during the transitioning between the ‘active’ and ‘inactive’ state. At 00:00, the water begins to recede with D-2160 able to enter at 01:16.

From the point D-2160 entered to the 09:00 mark is fairly uneventful with the same readings the previous explorations had provided. The map continued to prove useful with excelling the travel progress and nothing else notable is reported.

9:00
B: “D-2160, this is home base. Please report your progress.”

D: “Everything is good, but I keep hearing…something. That can’t be right, can it?”

B: “Explain?”

D: “I dunno. It’s faint. You know, really far away or at least I think it is. I wanna say that it’s this moaning or wailing sound, but maybe it’s the wind passing through this place? It’s creepy and kinda makes me uneasy.”

B: “Remember your firearm and just be sure to tread carefully.”

D: “Gotcha. Past that, nothing else to say really.”

B: “Understood.”

*The wailing isn’t recorded through the radio or the recording device on D-2160.*

10:45
D: “Hey Doc, can you guys hear me!?”
*Unidentified wailing sounds and voices can be heard through the radio*

B: “Yes we can. What’s going on?”

D: “I don’t know what this place is, but it’s gotta be cursed! There’s fucking [REDACTED] out here and they’re everywhere! Oh god! I don’t know what to fucking do! The gun doesn’t do shit!”
*The sound of D-2160 running is heard as the voices and wailing continue*

B: “Calm down. What is it you’re seeing exactly?”

D: “I…FUCK! They’re [REDACTED].I mean, there’s…god, I don’t fucking know how many…Most of them are just [REDACTED]. I don’t know if they’re alive or fucking what! What do I do!?”

B: “Alright, alright, try to get to safety. Can you understand what these things are saying? I’m hearing voices.”

D: “No…There’s too many and the wailing is too loud…”

B: “Alright, then retreat to the most secure place you can find.”

D: “Yeah…yeah ok!”
*The feed is cut at this point and no contact is obtainable over the course of three hours.*

13:50
D: “Home base…are you there?”

B: “We’re here. Give us the status of what’s going on.”

D: “Well, I fucking ran back as far as I could and found a small area that I was able to squeeze in and hide. I don’t think those things followed me back this far…”

B: “About where are you right now?”

D: [REDACTED]

B: “Alright. How long have you been stationed there?”

D: “I don’t know…an hour and a half, maybe? Like, those things followed me for a good little bit, but they didn’t seem too worried in actually catching me… I can’t hear them anymore either…”

B: “Do you think it’s safe enough for you to continue?”

D: “Man, I dunno…I really, really don’t want to go back there…I wanna leave.”

B: “Ok, try to continue for as far as you can, and when you hear the wailing, begin your return.”

D: ”…”

B: “D-2160?”

D: “…I…Alright…Fine, but the second I hear those…things, I’m out of here…”

B: “Understood.”

After this, D-2160 traveled and remained on course for about four hours. They reported in hearing the wailing from a far distance and requested termination of their exploration of SCP-XXX any further. This request was approved and D-2160 began their travel back. Due to the distance traveled and the time spent in SCP-XXX, D-2160 was approved to sleep where they chose and continue after waking. They slept for three hours before reporting back in and continuing their return. They are also ordered to report in at 10 till midnight.

23:50
D: “Reporting in… Nothing out of the usual now.Just the same stuff I’ve been looking at all day…thank god…”

B: “And the [REDACTED] are gone?”

D: “Yeah. I guess they’re not all the way up here…”

B: “Understood. Have you marked it on your map and the recorder?”

D: “Yeah, I have…fuck that area…”
*During the conversation, SCP-XXXX begins its transition to it’s ‘inactive’ state. Radio contact is also lost with D-2160 and is never re-established nor does D-2160 reemerge from SCP-XXXX, however their recordings are still uploaded.*

00:00
“So I seemed to have lost contact with Home Base…not sure if it’s a signal issue or…something else… Regardless, I’m going to go ahead and take my break. I probably will only take maybe twenty or thirty minutes for this one…I really just wanna get back…”

04:00
“Still nothing from the radio… I’m gonna keep trying, though…something feels…kind of off…but I think it’s because this place is frying my nerves…Those…things…I can’t stop seeing them in my mind…God…their fucking faces…and that fucking noise… Welp, I’m gonna try to relax a little again and get back to it.”

08:00
“I’m confused…It’s still dark as shit and I should be back at the entrance…”

*The rustling of a map can be heard along with some inaudible muttering.*

“Ok, so I’m about a mile from the entrance, so…what’s up? Home Base, if you’re getting this right now then please figure out what’s up with the radio…”

10:13
“I should have gotten back…It should be daytime now… What the fuck. Did I get fucking lost in here…No…No because I’m right where I should be on the map…Where is the FUCKING exit…? Home base, where the fuck are you?”

11:06
*D-2160’s voice is almost a whisper and nearly unintelligible*
“Oh god…how did they find me…I’m at the exit… The fucking exit should be right here…I…I don’t know what to do…They’re just fucking staring…their mouths are just hanging open… Fuck…I don’t wanna move…They’re just…staring…Just…staring…just…”

*The recording cuts at this point.*

After a few more hours of attempted communication with no response, D-2160 is assumed terminated. Currently, there are no more scheduled explorations into SCP-XXXX.
