Artifact involving mnestics / amnestics / time. Incident logs.
Anomaly Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: a 100m radius concrete bunker, with the obelisk in the middle. Bunker should be located at least a 24hour journey from nearest known anomalous weapon. Researchers assigned to the anomaly should be under a dose of mnestic to allow them to read the obelisk properly. Guards assigned to the anomaly are required to wear temporal shielding, and carry a crowbar capable of resetting temporal distortions. Sentient beings are to remain 10m from the obelisk at all times.
Description: Artifact is a black obelisk with 4 sides, coming to a point at the top and bottom. Obelisk floats motionless over a small black square base. White dots form a 9x16 grid on each side of the obelisk. The "front" of the obelisk has one rune in place of the white dot in the top left corner. The rune does not correspond to any known language, but approaching within 40m allows subjects to read it. This rune contains some instructions for escaping the obelisk's influence.
Obelisk emits a spherical amnestic/temporal field with radius 80m. The amnestic properties begin immediately upon entering the field, and intensify near the center.
80m - 40m - 20m - 10m
10m temporal field activates, allowing subject to jump back to this point at any time. Amnestic and temporal field follows subject if they leave the 80m sphere. Subject generally will explore. Subject will automatically be returned to this time and space if they expire via non-anomalous means. Subject will retain memory of previous time spent near the object, and the reason for the most recent time jump. Subjects generally develop stress related to their condition and seek a more permanent death.
Difficult to interact with. Researchers aggressively keep things away from artifact. Some kind of predictive ability, as if the researchers know exactly how to convince people to stay away.
Initial desc of artifact.
A small obelisk, black, four-sided. Etched with a grid of small dots. Approaching within 40m subjects claim dots are actually runes. Subject issued polaroid camera, approach to 10m, develop photo on spot. Anomalous nature does not extend to photo; photo shows grid of dots. Approaching within 10m deemed unsafe.
Proposal to discontinue testing: DENIED
The previous approach gathered no information about artifact. No explanation for the safety hazard was ever provided. As this was apparently the artifact's doing, the researchers will not be held directly accountable. Previous research staff reassigned and given amnestics. Light mnestic doses supplied to future researchers.
Revised desc of artifact.
Wide amnestic filter radiating from artifact deflects research staff. Upon interaction, causes a random anomalous death. Subjects seem aware of the mechanism that kills them, this could be the source of the reluctance to test it.
Proposal to administer half-doses of mnestics to test subjects to enforce testing compliance: APPROVED
Proposal to correlate with Foundation database, to see if these are consistent with anything we have on site: APPROVED
Revised desc of artifact.
Upon interaction, random sentient anomalous artifact activates, killing subject. Weapons selected are sentient, and capable of firing through site walls. Not always the same artifact, hence apparent random nature.
Proposal to continue testing with sentient weapons on site: DENIED
Proposal to test artifact at a site without sentient weapons: APPROVED
Proposal to increase mnestic dose for primary research team: APPROVED
Revised desc of artifact.
Upon interaction, the subject locates and gains access to an anomalous weapon. Subject then activates the weapon.
Proposal to test artifact at a site without weapons: DENIED
Proposal to expand subject pool to investigate correlation with weapon that activates: APPROVED
Revised desc of artifact.
Upon interaction, the subject locates and gains access to an anomalous weapon. If subject is aware of any anomalous weapon, one of those will be chosen, otherwise one seems to be chosen based on how easily it is accessible. Researchers under higher grade of mnestics are showing signs of rapid aging. Measurable time distortion when subject's skills make it harder for them to gain access to artifact. Artifact amnestic field strength intensifies in proportion to the time dilation, but subjects have been able to approach within 9m without triggering an interaction event.
Proposal to test full mnestic battery with artifact: DENIED
Proposal to administer one D-class subject with Class-Z mnestic: APPROVED
Revised desc of artifact.
Time / Amnestic field surrounding an obelisk. Approaching the obelisk enables the subject to travel through time, as long as they remain relatively close to the obelisk. The obelisk runes are messages from past subjects. They communicate that the only way out of the obelisk's influence is through death.
Administering mnestics allows the subject to approach more closely. This allows the subject to remain conscious of the process by which their thoughts are etched onto the obelisk. This also allows the subject to more readily read past advice for how to bypass site security to obtain weapons.
Class-Z mnestics allow the subject to touch the obelisk. A single rune was carved by the subject, and it is the only rune that remains visible at 40m distance. Approaching within 40m while focusing on this rune allows a subject to view the entire history of the obelisk, by reading the other runes that manifest.
The subject administered Class-Z mnestics was able to survive for just one hour before expiring at the base of the obelisk. They were able to travel back in time to just after entering within 10m of the obelisk, and spend an additional hour in that region. This process apparently repeated until a closed timelike curve was formed. The subject exited our timeline, leaving only that single rune behind.
(Transcribed from the rune in the top left corner of the front of the obelisk)
The obelisk is the only way for messages to travel between subjects different journeys through time. The Class-Z mnestics allowed the me to unpack everything I knew before I entered. It took me a lifetime. One hour at a time. I had time to revisit everything that led up to my crimes, my conviction…
They told me what Class-Z mnestics were. Rewrite my brain so that I can't forget. I can feel my entire sensory system processing every firing neuron. It's not meant to happen. I'm meant to forget most of this, and just pick the best parts. It takes so much longer to think through this haze. In a sense, these time skips are a way to bypass the one restriction on Class-Z mnestics. A way to bypass the limited time you get to spend with them in your system before death. It's a bit of a way to reset and go back. It's a bit of a way to live a life in spite of the mnestics. It's a bit of a life, anyways. I wouldn't say it's any better than the life I lived before. It's a life where I'm dying every second I'm awake. Still, I can play around with the runes on this obelisk a bit, tell myself a few jokes along the way.
I think I probably want to wipe them away before I'm done though. When I'm really done, when I decide not to travel back and continue the time jumps. I'll try and wipe the obelisk clean, leaving just one rune. That'll be nice and compact. Compact my whole life away into a single book, a single sentence, a single character, and then carve it into stone. If I don't, they'll probably eventually send someone else in after me, to go through the same things.
It's not how I'd choose any of this to go, but like I said, it's the only way I have left to communicate anything to the outside.
