Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX and all instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to be contained in a metal storage container of not less than 4 x 4 x 2 meters suspended at least 1 meter above the floor. SCP-XXXX-1 instances are to be kept on a metal frame in the middle of this container so that they do not have direct contact with any side of the box. Video surveillance of each side of this container should be monitored for protrusions. Any room located directly above, below, or adjacent to SCP-XXXX's location are not to be used as dormitories or for sleep studies except as part of an approved experiment.
Following incident SCP-XXXX-I2 (see incident report below), personnel should notice and report any unusual topography in the hallways and rooms surrounding SCP-XXXX's containment cell or lab rooms to Dr. Theresa Mathers or Site-11 Containment officials.
In the event of a containment breach a human corpse may be used to attract SCP-XXXX back to its containment cell.
Description:
This section is pending revision following incident SCP-XXXX-I2.
SCP-XXXX is a standard spring based twin sized mattress. Despite its seemingly normal appearance, it is self-healing and self-cleaning, clearing bodily fluids at a rate of 0.5L per hour.
SCP-XXXX contains twenty-four localities of increased firmness corresponding to the number of vertebrae in the human cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. While the human spine typically follows an S or C curve, SCP-XXXX displays a curve with three sharp and distinct changes in direction, described as a "3" or "M" shape. Persons who lie on SCP-XXXX, hereafter called Subjects, report feeling these "bumps" move underneath them during the night. Subjects also report hearing threatening whispers. Communication with the entity has been limited, but has indicated that SCP-XXXX believes replacing its spinal column would resolve its chronic pain.
Subjects who are killed by SCP-XXXX have their vertebrae forcibly removed from their back. No Subject's spine has been recovered following one of these attacks. Nevertheless following such an attack the surface of the and with the same length as the Subject's spinal column. Experimentation with SCP-XXXX has shown that only human Subjects are attacked, with both living and dead Subjects experiencing the same outcome.
High speed photography of attacks and autopsies have shown that SCP-XXXX's attacks have a consistent sequence. First, six sharp implements pierce the Subject's back on one side of the spinal column centered on the L1 vertebra. Simultaneously, a single sharp implement pierces the opposite side. These seven sharp implements squeeze towards one another to grasp the spine of the subject. The spine is then ripped out with inhuman force, causing near instant paralysis and death. Despite videos showing this sequence of events, no weapon has ever been seen to cause these injuries. Because of the arrangement of wounds, it is theorized that the SCP may manifest seven invisible digits with sharp claws during attacks.
Discovery: The following is a timeline of the events leading up to Incident SCP-XXXX-I1 and the recovery of SCP-XXXX by the foundation.
| Date | Description |
|---|---|
| 04/27/20██ | Subject 0 puts SCP-XXXX up on ███████.com as a freecycled mattress. They report that it is a spring based mattress in good condition and that it was used for 2 years. Subject 0 is contacted by the mother of Subject 1, who agrees to pick up the mattress the next day |
| 4/28/20██ | SCP-XXXX is acquired by Subject 1's mother. She sets it up in a small bedroom. After initial excitement, Subject 1 reports being afraid to sleep in the room. She sleeps in her mother's bed instead |
| 4/29/20██ | Subject 1 reports hearing whispers and feeling the bed move while trying to sleep. She tells her mother "It wants my back because its back hurts and I have a good back" and that there's hard bumps in the mattress that move. She again sleeps in her mother's bed. |
| 4/30/20██ | Mother of Subject 1 insists that the child sleep in her new bed overnight. |
| 5/1/20██ | Incident SCP-XXXX-I1: Subject 1 is found deceased and missing her spine which appears to have been pulled out of her back with great force. Crime scene investigators note that the sheets are saturated with blood, however no blood stains are found on the mattress, which piques the interest of an ex-Foundation investigator on the team. The SCP-Foundation is contacted and takes custody of SCP-XXXX. |
Concluding Notes: Subject 0 was interviewed, but claimed that no anomalous activity had occurred when it was in his custody. No similar incidents have been found that meet the same criteria as this attack. The origin of the anomaly has not been established.
