Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: A concrete wall must be constructed and maintained, sitting no closer to the center of SCP-XXXX's reactor #2 than one half Kilometer.
At some point on the wall, an observation tower should be maintained with a clear view of the reactor. This tower should have screens and instruments capable of connecting to the cameras and instruments present in SCP-XXXX via radio signal. There should always be at least one guard on site watching the plant from the tower for any obvious signs of a breach. The site must also be monitored at all times using the security cameras and Geiger counters originally built within the plant during it's construction in 19██, as any objects placed within the vicinity of SCP-XXXX will be subject to accelerated radioactive decay.
If any significant amount of radioactivity is detected emanating from SCP-XXXX, it shall be considered a containment breach and local communities should be evacuated.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a nuclear power plant located in South █████████ previously owned by the SouthEast █████████ Power Company. It consists of two pressurized water reactors that were officially put online in April 19██ and June 19██. On May 12, 19██, after an unexplained leakage of reactor coolant, reactor #2 suffered a catastrophic total meltdown. The melted core of U-235 managed to break all levels of reactor containment, including the reactor containment vessel, which was breached by a reactor blowout caused by high pressure within the containment vessel.
After the blowout and meltdown occurred, which left several tonnes of nuclear fuel sitting in a heap within the reactor's basement, specialists employed by the SouthEast █████████ Power Company were sent in to check on the status of the reactor. After an extensive search within Reactor #2's building, it was found that there was a complete lack of radioactive contamination in and around the site. The site was abandoned by the SouthEast █████████ Power Company due to this anomaly. After reports were filed with the company, the situation was flagged by the foundation and subsequently investigated. Due to the loss of it’s only nuclear power plant, the SouthEast █████████ Power Company suffered bankruptcy and was subsequently absorbed into █████ Energy, a front company for the foundation.
Anything built closer than 1/2 kilometer to reactor #2 will, within 24 hours of completion, be destroyed by what seems to be accelerated radioactive decay, despite the total lack of detectable radiation present on site. Any object, other than living organisms and objects directly connected to their person, such as clothes or a carried flashlight, will appear to undergo extensive decay when placed closer than 1/2 kilometer from the center of SCP-XXXX's reactor #2. This decay will last no more than 24 hours, and will leave the object completely disintegrated at the end of said decay. The reactor affects all materials differently, with steel rusting, concrete crumbling, and cloth rotting to name a few examples.
All objects present before the meltdown, along with any living organisms, are not affected by the decay present around SCP-XXXX. Wildlife had been observed moving into and out of the 1/2 kilometer exclusion zone before the wall was constructed, paying no mind to the presence of SCP-XXXX.
Research to replicate this anomaly for use as a possible means to contain the aftermath of a nuclear containment breach on any foundation site is ongoing, and has yet to yield any results.
Addendum XXXX.1: Discovery: The site was found, with reactor #1 fully functional and producing electricity, by an undercover investigation team, hours after the abandonment of the site by SouthEast █████████ Power Company employees. The plant was given SCP status shortly after. All employees on site during the incident were administered class C amnestics and given various cover stories that involve being transferred to an █████ Energy facility. Workers off site at the time of the meltdown were also told that they had been transferred to an █████ Energy facility. Since SCP-XXXX's discovery, no radiation has been detected on site, and reactor #2 has remained untouched.
Additional Notes: Reactor #1 is still fully functional on its own, despite the lack of any personnel on site to control it. The power of reactor #1 has been diverted from the main power grid for various uses by the foundation, and will continue to be used until the reactor’s Uranium is depleted. Reactor #1 has not displayed any signs of unusual behavior since taken under foundation control.
Experiment Log 1A:
Experiment 1 - 5/22/19██
Testing: Radioactivity
Procedure: Three D-class were sent into the reactor core with Geiger counters, basic trackers and flashlights. They were instructed to approach the core through the reactor’s basement, and to return if any radiation was detected beyond the normal background radiation. During the test, the group of D-class managed to accidentally discover a large, partially melted stream of metal, which was later identified to be part of the core.
Results: None of the D class suffered any adverse affects, despite being meters from a partially melted mass of U-235 for nearly 5 minutes.
Notes: One D-class reported setting down a flashlight near the melted mass of uranium for a moment to scratch his nose. After picking it back up he found the previously new flashlight to be slightly rusted and glowing much dimmer. The flashlight was inspected after the test, and all materials had been subjected to what seemed to be 5-10 years of decay. The flashlight has been contained in a clear plastic box and has not corroded any further since the incident.
Experiment 2 - 6/11/19██
Testing: Accelerated Corrosion
Procedure: Various objects, including a steel ball bearing, a potted plant, a flashlight, and a stuffed animal were placed various distances from Reactor #2, with every object within view of a security camera present when the plant was built. The objects were all placed within the containment building.
Results: Other than the potted plant, along with its soil and pot, all objects were subjected to accelerated corrosion. As objects neared the reactor, they corroded faster, with the stuffed animal placed 10 meters from the reactor being completely disintegrated within 30 minutes of having been placed.
Notes: While living entities and objects directly connected to those entities are not affected by accelerated decay, it is not currently known the extent to which this connection is valid. Would an object connected to an object connected to a live entity be subjected to accelerated corrosion? Later experiments should be done involving this concept.
Experiment 2A - 6/13/19██
Testing: Area of effect
Procedure: A D-class was instructed to place down a piece of string going from the wall of the reactor containment building in each of four directions: Due North, East, South and West. Each string was one kilometer long. A D-class watched each string and reported Roughly when each section of t he string was disintegrated, a section being marked by black marks along the string every 100 meters. The strings were observed for 5 days
Results: The farthest portion of each string to desintigrate was calculated, using the plants original blueprints, to be about one half kilometer from the center of reactor #2. It took approximately 24 hours for the string, at the farthest point that it underwent decay from the reactor, but beyond that point the string was completely intact, appearing to have undergone no decay at all.
Notes: Using this data, a wall was constructed around the plant, one half kilometer out to prevent unwanted individuals from entering the plant.
Experiment 3 - 4/5/20██
Testing: Extent of connection to living organisms required to halt accelerated decay
Procedure: A D-class was sent into the reactor containment building, ten meters from the melted core mass holding a plate with a Flashlight sitting on top of the plate, in full view of one of the core’s security cameras.
Results: The flashlight set atop the plate almost immediately started to corrode, proving that an object should be directly touching a living organism in order to avoid accelerated decay.
Notes: It is not known why the entire plant has not been subjected to any more corrosion then should be expected from a [REDACTED] lack of maintenance, along with the soil, rock, etc. that existed within the plant’s 1/2 km influence zone.
