Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B are to be kept in separate item storage lockers in Site-XX. Both instances should not be stored in the same storage locker, Consoles capable of playing SCP-XXXX, or any devices capable of playing video or capable of receiving or translating an RCA or RF audiovisual signal should not be stored alongside either instance. During testing, two standard Nintendo Entertainment System models NES-001 are to be connected to two compatible CRT televisions via RCA. Two D-Class personnel familiar with the non-anomalous version of the game are to play through the entirety of SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B respectively. Two supervising researchers are to record the respective playthroughs and document any deviations from the function and gameplay of a non-anomalous cartridge.

Description: SCP-XXXX consists of two official cartridges of the video game ██████ published by ██████ in 1987 which have been anomalously modified to allow for wireless multiplayer. On inspection of the internals of the cartridges, they both appear to be identical to a standard release version of the game and lack any antenna or transceiver. Analysis of the ROM data of both cartridges reveals identical programming to the standard release version as well.

If the game is started in one player mode, the cartridge appears unmodified, however if a game starts in two player mode on either of the cartridges, second controller input does not function. If both cartridges are used to play in two player mode at the same time, each instance will control one of the two characters in both games and the game will proceed as if both players were playing on the same console, regardless of physical location of each player or console. The method by which SCP-XXXX-A and SCP-XXXX-B communicate is unknown, as neither cartridge emits any unexpected radio or electromagnetic frequencies during gameplay. There is currently no known distance limit for this communication.

Discovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered after Foundation webcrawler CL/SCAMMER noticed potentially anomalous language in an advertisement for a yard sale of multiple video game cartridges. SCP-████ and SCP-████ were also acquired at this time. Discovered alongside the cartridges was a handwritten note, found inside the box for SCP-XXXX-A.

Dan,

I'm sorry I've been away so long. I'm sure mom and dad have already told you that I can't come home for a while. They're right, it's safer for me to be here and I don't really want you to see me in this sorry state anyway, ha! I'll be home eventually either way. I thought this might happen though, so I messed around for a while, and I made this!
I know it looks like the usual cartridge, but give it a try today when you get home, plug in a controller, pick two player, and wait around a bit for me. I even found a cheat code while I was making it, gives you extra lives. Makes me wish we had [ILLEGIBLE]

Nevermind about that anyway, we'll beat it soon with all the practice we put in.

I'll see you soon!
Ben.
