Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX Is to remain in it's designated containment chamber within Site-64. The chamber is to be kept at a negative pressure at all times. SCP-XXXX should not be powered on unless undergoing pre-authorized testing, or dowsing SCP personel.
SCP-XXXX's containment chamber should be periodically cleaned of salt buildup every 48 hours with pressurized water hoses. Cleaning personnel are advised to wear respiratory and skin protection.
There is no current indication that short term exposure to SCP-XXXX's emissions is harmful, but caution is advised and personnel are encouraged to spend no more time in SCP-XXXX's containment chamber than is necessary until more data on the nature of the emissions is acquired.
Description:

SCP-XXXX appears to be an antique marine depth sounder or 'fish finder.' It's contained in a large metal carrying case roughly the size of a large tool box, sea green in color, with the make and model written in bold red lettering on the side. The case opens on a hinge to reveal a round display with a spinning, flashing light to indicate water depth and a beeper to signal the presence of fish or other nearby objects. There are two knobs on either side of the display labeled "sensitivity" and "suppressor."
SCP-XXXX emits a fine mist of salt into the surrounding air, which creates a film on every surface accept the object itself. Currently the only recorded ill effects from exposure to this are normal levels of dermal and respiratory irritation.
SCP-XXXX appears to operate like a normal depth sounder when tested at SCP facilities, however, when placed on a vessel in a large body of salt water (fresh water does not have this effect) the device ceases normal operation. The screen, which normally displays a single dot to indicate water depth, instead fills the entire meter, and the beeper which normally indicates the presence of nearby objects, ceases to detect objects in the water and instead alarmed whenever certain SCP personnel came within 5 meters of SCP-XXXX.
A commonality was later discovered in the personnel that triggered SCP-XXXX; They had all previously been affected by an SCP. An officer that had merely seen an SCP, or interacted with one without incurring the SCPs effects, did not trigger SCP-XXXX. The person in question had to have been previously influenced by an SCP, whether physically or mentally. These individuals who triggered the object also reported no dryness of skin or lungs when exposed to the salty atmosphere created by SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX was found on December 28th, 19██ on a small abandoned fishing boat adrift in the ██████ ███ off the coast of Alaska by the crab fishing vessel ██████████. The boat was without fuel or power. Every surface of the boat, accept for SCP-XXXX, was coated with a 3cm layer of salt buildup. The air on the boat was described as uncharacteristically dry.
The device was sitting on the deck of the boat, facing outward towards the water, the power cable unhooked and coiled next to it. For normal operation, such devices must be hooked to a transducer, which emits and receives a sonic pulse. However, there is no indication that a transducer was ever installed on the boat.
SCP-XXXX was later confiscated in February 4th, 20██ by SCP personnel when it was discovered at a dump site where every object around it had been been covered in nearly half a meter of salt.
Addendum: Use and study of the object is ongoing, and has sense been helpful in determining the presence of SCP influence in personnel working with other, more hazardous SCPs.
