Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is contained in a basic safe storage locker. It is situated on a standard book holder, held open at a 45-degree angle.
Both the front and back covers are strapped to the holder with leather straps. No attempts should be made to remove them. When SCP-XXXX is not in use, snake weights are to be employed to ensure it remains open to the page displaying SCP-XXXX-A.
In the event that the leather straps are removed from SCP-XXXX and it is allowed to completely close, all further research is to be halted. SCP-XXXX is to be placed in a secure locker and no further observation will be allowed.
Description: SCP-XXXX-A is a leather bound codex containing two separate manuscripts, both written in Latin. The manuscripts date back to the thirteenth century, but the binding is more recent, estimated to have been done in the sixteenth century or later. There is evidence that the current binding is a replacement for an earlier one that also included both works.
SCP-XXXX-B, an anatomically incorrect manicule, is the single instance of annotation within SCP-XXXX-A. SCP-XXXX-B has two modes, active and inactive. In its inactive phase, SCP-XXXX-B appears non-anomalous, always pointing at a line within one of the manuscripts. Its active phase is, as of yet, unobserved. When SCP-XXXX-A is entirely shut, an unknown mechanism is unlocked that allows SCP-XXXX-B to relocate to other parts of the text. When SCP-XXXX-A is reopened, SCP-XXXX-B reverts to it inactive state. So far, testing indicates that SCP-XXXX-B's new location is random, though there is a higher probability of it reappearing in the last manuscript it was observed in.
No further anomalies have been observed. SCP-XXXX was taken from the estate sale of a late book collector. The executor appeared to have no knowledge of its anomalous properties, and the Foundation was able to secure it without any further intrusion.
Test Log
Procedure: The researcher is to repeatedly open and close SCP-XXXX-A and record SCP-XXXX-B's movements.
Result 0: Prior to testing, SCP-XXXX-B was located in "Virtues of Certain Stones," section 7: "if it be put in seething water it maketh it to run over" (in reference to topaz)
Result 1: SCP-XXXX-B is found in "Virtues of Certain Stones," section 24: "which how long he did bear it, always had victory" (in reference to Gigatronica, possibly amber)
Addendum: Dr. Taylor requested permission to use SCP-XXXX as research tool for SCP-\\\\, which shares similar geographic and temporal origins. Permission granted.
