Special Containment Procedures: A secure storage facility (IADBS2 Area XXXX) has been constructed around the SCP-XXXX portal within SCP-XXXX-1's Forêt de Baïnem for the purpose of housing SCP-XXXX-2 instances as well as backups of high-priority Foundation documents. Access to SCP-XXXX-1 outside of this Area is prohibited outside of authorized SCP-XXXX-2 retrievals. A secure perimeter has been constructed around the side of SCP-XXXX within baseline reality in Étang de Thau. Due to this perimeter's location being near a populated area, various concealment measures including large-scale cloaking devices and X-Class Repulsion memetics have been put in place.
Despite posing a potential CK-class Reality Restructuring Scenario threat if handled improperly, the O5 Council has voted 8-5 in favor of continuing retrieval of select SCP-XXXX-2 instances, which are to be exclusively done by MTF Rho-77 ("Cross-Pollinators") with approval from L5 personnel. Once brought into baseline reality and given sufficient time to have their desired effect, instances are to be returned to their original locations or stored within Area XXXX.
Any person or object traveling through the threshold of SCP-XXXX from baseline reality to SCP-XXXX-1 or vice versa must first be authorized by L5 personnel. Personnel deemed to be a potential historical divergence are to not be allowed entry through SCP-XXXX under any circumstance. Man-made objects passing through the threshold must be manufactured within a month prior to their time of entry and bear no symbols depicting countries, companies, organizations, etc.
In the event of a major alteration to history caused by SCP-XXXX-2, the severity of the alteration(s) will be assessed, and appropriate measures will be taken, up to and including the Ennui Protocol. All contradictory information resulting from an impartial alteration is to be expunged from public view.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a 0.8m wide, 3.5m tall spacial anomaly located in Étang de Thau, Sète, France that serves as a portal into an alternate reality, designated SCP-XXXX-1, exiting into a parallel version of the Forêt de Baïnem. SCP-XXXX was discovered shortly after its reported manifestation on 05/07/2015 by local residents, who were amnesticized following initial containment.
SCP-XXXX-1 diverges from baseline history in a large number of ways. Some aspects remain unchanged, including the current day, year, and time; the age of the Earth; and the age and position of all observed celestial bodies, including SCP-XXXX-1's Sun and its Milky Way galaxy. However, history between the two is largely divergent.
Efforts to document SCP-XXXX-1's history are somewhat hindered by the fact that any descriptions of divergent events written on materials originating from inside the anomaly will become SCP-XXXX-2 instances, but this effort is still ongoing.
The following are examples of prominent divergences:
- Non-existence of the SCP Foundation, any of its GoIs, or any equivalents
- No observed anomalies
- Fewer recorded wars throughout history and fewer authoritarian/dictatorial regimes both throughout history and in SCP-XXXX-1's present day
- Absence of many notable tragedies in history (examples include: detonation of nuclear bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, the Boston Massacre)
- Absence of many notable assassinations throughout history (examples include: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi. All died of natural causes in SCP-XXXX-1.)
- More diverse species of animal and plant life, including the presence of species which are extinct in baseline reality
- Globally longer average lifespans, better average health, etc.
- Substantially lower air pollution levels
All objects originating from SCP-XXXX-1 that depict a significant historical divergence in any way are designated instances of SCP-XXXX-2. Objects within SCP-XXXX-1 which do not represent a significant divergence from baseline history are non-anomalous. Instances can be physical or digital documentation, such as books, recordings, or pictures, and can also be artistic interpretations such as paintings and sculptures. In the case of specific people acting as divergences, their body, alive or dead, is also a SCP-XXXX-2 instance. What exactly constitutes a significant historical divergence is not completely understood, and as such all objects within SCP-XXXX-1 are to be considered SCP-XXXX-2 until proven otherwise.
SCP-XXXX-2 instances possess an anomalous property which comes into effect when instances are brought through the threshold of SCP-XXXX and into baseline reality. This effect varies depending on the importance of the divergence the instance represents and how closely related the object is to the divergence. The effects of SCP-XXXX-2 instances can be harmless and localized, but may also greatly alter history; thus far, the most major historical alteration from a SCP-XXXX-2 instance to date is the erasure of a member of MTF Rho-77 (see Incident XXXX-1), however, it is believed that SCP-XXXX-2 instances' ability to alter history are theoretically boundless. The properties of SCP-XXXX-2 instances that is of the most use to the Foundation (and thus, the reason for its Thaumiel classification) is their ability to predict future events via a memetic effect on certain individuals. (See Test Log.)
Addendum XXXX-a [Abridged Test Log]:
Foreword: All effects applied only to baseline reality and had no effect on SCP-XXXX-1; "areas of effect" mentioned below only apply to the baseline reality side of SCP-XXXX. Additionally, listed divergence points are conjecture, but are believed to be accurate.
Test #: XXXX-9
Divergence Point: Assassination of Abraham Lincoln; did not occur in SCP-XXXX-1's history.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Gun belonging to SCP-XXXX-1's John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Abraham Lincoln in baseline reality. Gun was confirmed to not be the equivalent of the one used in the assassination.
Result: No immediate effects. Personnel in the area later reported having dreams of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in which they took on many roles, including Agent █████ who reported dreaming of taking on the role of the bullet used to kill Abraham Lincoln. Dreams persisted for approximately 1 week. No further effects.
Test #: XXXX-15
Divergence Point: Location of the Ark of the Covenant. Currently resides in St. Mary of Zion Cathedral within baseline reality and is displayed within ██████ Museum in SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Several miniature replicas of the Ark.
Result: Personnel within an approximately 30m radius gained memories of transporting the Ark between various locations, taking on the roles of various historical figures. Affected personnel were amnesticized.
Test #: XXXX-17
Divergence Point: 1) Ronald Reagan's death; in SCP-XXXX-1, Reagan died on August 13th, 2002 of a sudden heart attack, while in baseline history he died on June 5, 2004 of pneumonia. 2) Existence of SCP-1981; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Tape of Ronald Reagan delivering his "Evil Empire" speech to the National Association of Evangelicals at Sheraton Twin Towers Hotel, Orlando, FL on 08/03/1983. Specifically chosen due to possible connections to SCP-1981 in order to test how SCP-XXXX may affect other SCP objects.
Result: Surrounding personnel involuntarily spoke the phrase "September ██th, 20██, ██:██:██ PM". A containment breach was attempted at this predicted date and time, in which a D-Class personnel attempted to access SCP-1981 in containment. D-Class was terminated before being able to break in.
Notes: Following this test, a proposal to reclassify SCP-XXXX as Thaumiel3 was submitted to the O5 Council. Request approved 10-3 on ██/██20██.
Test #: XXXX-19
Divergence Point: Existence of SCP-1715; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Photograph of I'm Not There by Pol Ubeda Hervas.4
Result: Two days later, approximately ██ homicides occurred in a single day within the town of █████, Michigan. All victims were later confirmed to be SCP-1715-1 instances.
Notes: Well, this is certainly confusing. Is this a direct result of the instance crossing the threshold, or a response from 1715 itself? We previously thought that SCP-XXXX-2 instances only had the ability to affect those around it in a limited radius; this is clearly incorrect. I suggest we tentatively move forward in research. There is a possibility that the potential area of effect could be limitless. —Dr. Kent
Test #: XXXX-22
Divergence Point: Existence of SCP-4456-D; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Floorboard of the ship "Soy Mi Amante".
Result: Personnel in the surrounding area each involuntarily verbalized several sets of coordinates. Rewatching of security footage allowed a transcript to be made of the majority of them, and there areas were later confirmed as manifestation points of SCP-4456.
Test #: XXXX-24
Divergence Point: Existence of SCP-173; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Eyesight (視力 Shiryōku), SCP-XXXX-1's equivalent to SCP-173. Object is a physically identical, but non-anomalous statue created by artist I████ K███.
Result: SCP-173 became completely dormant and effectively non-anomalous for 48 hours, after which it returned to normal behavior. Effect could not be replicated.
Test #: XXXX-26
Divergence Point: 1) Publication of the Where's Wally? book series. In SCP-XXXX-1, publication was cancelled in 2014 due to financial reasons within the series' publication companies. Publication is still ongoing in baseline reality. 2) Existence of SCP-4885; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: Copy of the final printed issue of Where's Wally? within SCP-XXXX-1.
Result: Several days later, Researcher █████, assigned to SCP-4885 reported gaining a "pretty bad feeling" about one of the 36 possible SCP-4885 containment chambers shortly after the above SCP-XXXX-2 instance was retrieved. A maintenance team was dispatched and various structural flaws were discovered and repaired.
Notes: This appears to confirm my previous suspicion on an unlimited area of effect. Luckily, this particular effect was helpful. I've sent a currently pending request to restrict item transfer through the threshold to L5 personnel. I'm now fairly certain now that this is an Ekhi-class. —Dr. Kent
Test #: XXXX-28
Divergence Point: Existence of SCP-190-DE; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: DNA samples from SCP-190-DE-1 and -2. (Normal, non-anomalous humans within SCP-XXXX-1.)
Result: All walls within a 20m radius of SCP-XXXX were covered in graffiti depicting various menu items and manifestation times of SCP-190-DE, many of which were dated to the future. Information was copied and sent to the German branch.
Notes: First instance of physical effects. Not only was this a pain to clean up, it's also very concerning. I'll have to check the records, but I don't believe this particular SCP-XXXX-2 was authorized. —Dr. Kent
Test #: XXXX-31
Divergence Point: Existence of SCP-4252; no anomalies exist within SCP-XXXX-1.
SCP-XXXX-2 Instance: The text of SCP-4252-B written on a piece of paper with a pencil, both from SCP-XXXX-1.
Result: SCP-4252 was activated despite the phrase not being spoken. Personnel in the surrounding area reported hearing a dial tone, followed by the sound of running water, then the voice of SCP-4252, who stated "that's weird", after which the effects abruptly ended.
Addendum XXXX-b [Incident XXXX-1]: On, 10/05/2019, several days after Test XXXX-34, MTF Rho-77 returned to baseline reality after a retrieval mission. In addition to the authorized items, an obituary reporting the death of ██████ ████ was among the items brought through the threshold. MTF Rho-77 was also found to have one member less than the number of agents who entered SCP-XXXX-1. This initially lead to the belief that said agent had been left behind inside the anomaly, however, all interviewed personnel, including MTF Rho-77 and other personnel assigned to SCP-XXXX were unable to recall any details or memories of the agent. Foundation records contained a corrupted name listed as a member of MTF Rho-77. The MTF Rho-77 member who brought over the unauthorized item was unable to be identified.
Following this event, SCP-XXXX was placed on lockdown and labeled a CK-class threat; Disruption and Risk classes were updated accordingly.5 The previously mentioned decision to continue using SCP-XXXX as a Thaumiel object was made by the O5 Council shortly after.
