Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a standard anomalous object container in site 17. Due to the benign nature of the object SCP-XXXX is available for recreation use by site personnel upon request when testing is not scheduled, with the caveat that all interactions are to be monitored and analyzed by assigned researchers as testing data.
All unique audio recordings of sounds produced by SCP-XXXX are to be cataloged and stored in foundation databases under designation SCP-XXXX-R.
Personnel who have received psychological counselling after a traumatic experience with any other SCP are discouraged from interacting with SCP-XXXX outside of testing, especially if the SCP in question produces a distinct auditory effect of any sort.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an inflatable red rubber playground ball 25cm in diameter, and textured with a checkerboard pattern of ridges common to non-anomalous balls of the same type. There are no identifiable brand markings or other irregularities on the outside of the object. Notably, SCP-XXXX has no apparent exterior nozzle for inflation. Mass and compression resistance of SCP-XXXX are consistent with a non-anomalous ball inflated to 1.5 psi with pure Xenon gas.
Upon being stuck or thrown against a hard surface SCP-XXXX will emit an audible noise other than the characteristic bouncing sound normally associated with non-anomalous playground balls, examples include running water, flapping cloth, the sound of a basketball passing through a hoop, the screech of a car tire, a stock "bubbling" sound effect, and a single note or chord played on an instrument. The noise produced will always be immediately identifiable to the individual who last touched SCP-XXXX(hereafter referred to as the subject). Sounds which would normally be loud enough to damage the hearing of the subject such as gunshots or explosions are emitted at a safe, although sometimes still uncomfortable, volume. If SCP-XXXX is activated while a sound is still ongoing the sound will be cut short and a different sound will play. If SCP-XXXX is brought forcibly to rest (such as being caught after a bounce) any active sound will immediately cease.
When used by subjects who have been deaf since birth, SCP-XXXX produces no audible sound. When used by subjects who were not born deaf, but have since lost their sense of hearing, SCP-XXXX will still produce a noise that is audible to others in the vicinity.
Although human vocalizations such as laughing, grunting, humming, and whistling have been recorded, SCP-XXXX has never produced a reproduction of spoken language. This has been seen to not include animal vocalization in mimicry of human speech such as a talking parrot, or artificial reproductions of human speech such as a text-to-speech device. SCP-XXXX has been observed to occasionally produce sounds of a disturbing or distressing nature. (e.g. screams of a deceased loved one) This is normal and any resulting psychological distress is to be treated as non-anomalous.
SCP-XXXX shows a strong tendency to emit sounds of which the subject has extremely specific knowledge. For example, when used by a subject intimately familiar with a wide range of firearms SCP-XXXX was significantly more likely to produce the sound of gunfire on any given activation. In this case the subject was able to identify the exact model of gun being fired on every occasion. In another instance a subject with a hobby of bird watching was able to accurately identify 25 different bird calls produced on 25 consecutive activations.
SCP-XXXX shows an even stronger tendency to emit sounds which the subject associates with another SCP. Fragments of the song sung by SCP-983, phrases spoken by SCP-846, vocalizations of SCP-1400, and short clips of SCP-061 have been observed following activation by subjects which had previously come into contact with these SCP. Reproductions of sounds produced by an SCP which would normally constitute a cognitiohazard do not show any of the expected anomalous effects when emitted by SCP-XXXX, nor do subsequent recordings of these reproductions. Whether this is due to the influence of SCP-XXXX itself or some other more practical reason is unknown.
History: SCP-XXXX was brought to foundation attention on ██/██/20██ in the town of █████,Oklahoma. Agent ████ ███████, a foundation agent embedded in the local police force, passed a group of local schoolchildren playing a game of kickball and noted the object's anomalous auditory properties. When questioned as to SCP-XXXX's origin a ██ year old boy named ███ ██████ informed Agent ███████ "My dad brings me stuff from work sometimes". Agent ███████ was able to obtain the object, and immediately brought it in for containment.
Addendum:Subsequent investigations have revealed that all information regarding the exact identity and whereabouts of ███ ██████'s father have been erased from public records and local memory. Further investigation is ongoing.
