A structure within SCP-XXXX photographed during exploration.

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Under the approval of the New Zealand government, Provisional Area-88 has been constructed near SCP-XXXX.

Monitoring of SCP-XXXX must be maintained via visual surveillance. Personnel may enter SCP-XXXX only for the purposes of authorized exploration and/or research. Unauthorized attempts to access SCP-XXXX or SCP-XXXX-1 may be met with immediate disciplinary action.

Any imagery or other forms of evidence depicting SCP-XXXX or SCP-XXXX-1 must be censored and exposed persons administered Class-A amnestics. This includes satellite imagery, cartographic material, and climate databases. Area-88 staff are prohibited from photographing the anomaly without express permission from Level-4 personnel.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous structure located within the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The facility is a single-storied, circular building; the vast central enclosure within the facility covers approximately twenty square kilometers. Several, similar structures located nearby SCP-XXXX are suspected to be related, although they do not exhibit anomalous properties.

The climate of SCP-XXXX is markedly different from that of the surrounding area. Temperatures range from 19° to 30° Celsius; precipitation averages at 220 cm annually. This tropical environment functions independently of outside conditions and is unaffected by exterior factors, despite lacking sufficient shelter from them.

Additionally, SCP-XXXX is inhabited by a significant amount of wildlife. Genetic analysis of these species, designated SCP-XXXX-1, has shown similarities to species found in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe, with the exception of most plant species. Despite extreme differences between the populations, it is estimated that SCP-XXXX and European species diverged from a common ancestor only three hundred years ago.

SCP-XXXX-1 species (specifically, animals) exhibit an accelerated rate of genetic mutation, upwards of fifty thousand times more in than non-anomalous species (1 in 60,000 compared to 1 in 3,000,000,000). Polyploidy1 is also increasingly common. Furthermore, populations of SCP-XXXX-1 display rapid maturation and significantly shorter gestation periods and life spans, reducing generation time by up to 95%. As a result, SCP-XXXX-1 species display an extremely advanced rate of speciation. It is estimated that an SCP-XXXX-1 speciation event occurs once every two to three weeks.

Approximately every fifteen to seventeen years, a Ω-event will occur. During these events, 60-90% of SCP-XXXX-1 species will experience massive population loss or total extinction. Although an exact cause for these events is unknown, overconsumption and accumulated harmful mutations are suspected to be major contributors. SCP-XXXX-1 populations may take up to two years to recover from loss caused by a Ω-event.

SCP-XXXX was initially made known to the Foundation on 22/4/1956. Authorities at McMurdo Base notified the Foundation of staff who claimed to have observed a large "colosseum-like" structure. Several employees had also been reported missing, presumably after attempting to investigate the anomaly. A tactical response team was deployed the following day, leading to SCP-XXXX’s discovery. Missing McMurdo Station personnel have not yet been found.

Since SCP-XXXX’s classification, several expeditions into the area have been conducted. Transcripts of the video feed from these expeditions can be found in the SCP-XXXX Exploration Logs. Further exploration of SCP-XXXX is being considered.
