Item #: SCP-4368

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4368 is to be kept in a 5m x 5m x 5m metal room with a wall thickness of at least forty (40) centimeters and an observation window made of bullet proof glass with a thickness of at least seventy (70) centimeters, located at least 500m underground. SCP-4368 is to be contained at specially built Site 192-B in the north of ████████, Russia, separate from all other anomalies in containment. Access to SCP-4368’s chamber is to be under a five-airlock system, all airlocks to be outfitted with a release mechanism to aerate a Class-D or higher fungicide. Airlocks are to undergo a two (2) minute decontamination period using fungicides, before individuals may begin proceeding through. A ten (30) minute period will be established before allowing access into the next airlock (on exit or entrance) in order to screen on whether the individual is infected. Airlocks are to be routinely cleaned by Class-B personnel or higher through use of flamethrowers.

All uncovered material is forbidden from exiting SCP-4368’s chamber after entering. Materials and personnel are required to wear an airtight hazmat, complete with a separate air supply. Testing and/or access to SCP-4368’s chamber is prohibited unless given permission by 3 Members of the O5 Council. Any uncovered material or personnel that proceed past airlock 3 are to be considered lost, and purged through cleaning (see above), or after conducting tests by not allowing them to leave SCP-4368’s chamber. In the case of a “black” level containment breach (See Addendum 1), access to the underground lab is to be detonated and all underground personnel and SCP-4368 to be considered lost.

Description: SCP-4368 is a member of the Agaricus bisporus series of mushroom, looking identical to the wild strain of the species. The difference comes in the fact that SCP-4368 decomposes organic material on the molecular level at a rapid rate, often destroying material infected within 1-2 hours (for a complete guide to SCP-4368 cycle, see Addendum 2) The organic material being decomposed (hereon referred to as SCP-4368-1) will be restructured into additional iterations of SCP-4368 and release spores (hereon referred to as SCP-4368-2) that linger for a currently indefinite amount of time. The only way known way to destroy iterations of SCP-4368-2 is through intense heat and or fungicide. SCP-4368-2 has been shown to be one of SCP-4368’s primary ways of spreading itself. Direct contact with either SCP-4368 or SCP-4368-2 will cause an organic material to become infected and become a SCP-4368-1. As of this point, there is no known cure to SCP-4368 after becoming infected, though it has been confirmed that a iteration of SCP-4368 cannot infect another version of SCP-4368.

SCP-4368 was discovered in a field nearby a small town in ████████████, Nebraska. The town had been overtaken by SCP-4368, with many structures having collapsed due to lack of wood and other organic materials used in construction. No survivors have been found, but many implants and prosthetics have been found. At the point of discovery, SCP-4368 had a radius encompassing nearly 13 kilometers, and rapidly expanding at estimated rates of 1-2km/hr. It is assumed due to the rapid rate of material reconstruction, observers or others who came across SCP-4368, became versions of SCP-4368-1. Foundation agents were able to successfully burn back SCP-4368, and obtain a sample, before decontaminating the surrounding area.
