SCP-??? prior to containment

Item #: SCP-????

Object Class: Safe Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-????-1 is to be placed on a tripod in the middle of a standard containment chamber at Site-██. The tripod should be positioned so that the camera is 2 meters above the ground and facing the north wall, the lens parallel to the ground. The walls, floor, and ceiling of the room are to be painted black. The north and east walls are to be left blank, save for a light detector on the north wall. There are to be no security cameras in this room. The entrance to the room is to be located on the south wall. On the west wall, there is to be a standard darkroom for film development. It is to contain all of the standard equipment for photo development, and is to be restocked with 36 shot 35 millimeter film whenever any instances of SCP-????-2 are developed. only when the routine development procedure is undertaken by D-class personnel. 4 cameras are to be positioned in each corner of the room. One camera is to be positioned in one corner of the room, facing away from the primary development area.

Researchers, agents, and other Site-██ personnel of Class-C or higher are free to enter and exit the containment room of SCP-????-1 as they please. Personnel, provided they have knowledge of film development, are permitted to take SCP-????-2 out of SCP-????-1 at their leisure, given that it is the end of a cycle and that they replace it with the correct film stock thereafter. If personnel develop SCP-????-2, they must create two copies of each instance resulting from SCP-????-2 on 3 x 5 photo paper, one for the record-keeping department of Site-██ and one for personal use. Personnel are advised to remember to shut the door to the containment room upon exit.

Entrance of the containment chamber of SCP-????-1 is restricted only for D-class personnel. Immediately after 36 instances of SCP-????-A, two D-class personnel are to enter the room and remove SCP-????-2 from SCP-????-1. Upon removal, they are to immediately move into the development room. While one subject, heretofore referred to as "D1," develops the film, the other, heretofore referred to as "D2" is to stand in direct view of the camera. D2 is to keep his eyes closed for the duration of the procedure. D1 is then to look over each of the film negatives. If they can continue operating, they are then to produce positives of each image onto 3 x 5 film paper. Only one photo should be produced from each negative. D2 is to verbally signal D1 to respond every 15 seconds. Should D1 fail to respond three subsequent times, D2 is to [REDACTED], and ten 15,000 lux lights are to be remotely activated in the darkroom. Should any of these lights fail to be activated, a sprinkler system dispensing [REDACTED] is to be activated in the darkroom. If such an event takes place, class-D personnel will be sent in the following day to remove what remains of D1 and D2 and repair the developing station.

Description: SCP-????-1 takes the form of a normal Yashido Electric 35 GSN camera. It was discovered in 19██, ██ years before these cameras officially entered production. It was recovered from a private collection, after its owner was heard bragging about a "defective" camera which took "nonsensical photos."

All photos manually taken with SCP-????-1 appear to be completely normal and devoid of anomalous properties. However, when the camera is left untouched, it will automatically shoot photos at random intervals. Once this process starts, the film reel inside of SCP-????-1 becomes an instance of SCP-????-2. Photos will continue to be taken until the film in the camera runs out. If the camera is at all touched, or exposed to over 10 lux of visible light, the process will end and the film inside will become overexposed and unable to be developed. Each instance of the camera's unaided operation is regarded as SCP-????-A. The periods between instances of SCP-????-A vary widely, from 18 microseconds to 12 and a half years.

Once developed, SCP-????-2 displays a series of negatives from what appear to be parallel universes, similar in physics and dimension to our own. All photos are from a planet seemingly analogous to Earth, but they vary wildly in observed climate, location, and, judging by the positions of the stars, time. These photos can be transferred onto larger sheets of photographic paper in a darkroom after development, enabling further study. These photos have been shown to be completely harmless, allowing the open-door policy of containment for SCP-????. Occasionally, SCP-????-2 contains an image which is classified as an extremely lethal cognitohazard. Upon viewing a developed positive print, anyone who observes it is instantly put in a vegetative state, their muscles locking them in whatever position they were in at the time of observing. Although no external signs of movement have been observed in individuals afflicted with this condition, brain function has been shown to continue for up to two hours after the initial viewing took place. So far, six personnel have been lost due to this event. The cognitohazard does not seem to apply to any negative prints of the photo.
