SCP-XXXX at resting depth. Note the distortion of the photograph caused by high radiation levels.

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: A 600 km2 perimeter is maintained around SCP-XXXX. The perimeter is divided into three zones: the outer “Green Zone”, the 200 km2 “Yellow Zone”, and the inner 50 km2 “Red Zone”. Unauthorized vessels entering the Green Zone are to be redirected under the cover story of an ongoing ecological study in the area.

All staff manning vessels within the Yellow and Red Zones are to wear electronic personal dosimeters at all times. Staff within the Yellow Zone should not receive a yearly whole body effective dose in excess of 5 rem. Persons who exceed this dose should be rotated out within 1 week. Radiation levels exceeding 10 rem/h necessitate an immediate evacuation to the outer Green Zone, followed by medical evaluation of effected staff.

The SCPS Geiger is the only vessel authorized to enter the Red Zone. SCPS Geiger is equipped with extensive radiation shielding and monitors, as well as a fleet of unmanned submersibles capable of emergency repairs. MTF Eta-12 “Flash Bangers” are the primary personnel involved in the containment and study of SCP-XXXX. MTF Eta-12 consists of two separate containment teams that rotate between manning the SCPS Geiger on a 6 month basis. Personnel should not exceed a dose of 5 rem during their rotation. A short term dose of 25 rem is allowable during emergency procedures and is to be followed by evacuation and medical assessment. Levels of 50 rem/h necessitate immediate evacuation of all personnel into the Green Zone.

Should SCP-XXXX show signs of reentering an active state, protocol VELA will be activated. During protocol VELA, all vessels aside from the SCPS Geiger immediately evacuate from the containment area. SCPS Geiger will deploy its cache of boron control rods into and around SCP-XXXX as well as its fleet of unmanned remote monitoring vessels. Upon completion of these operations SCPS Geiger will evacuate the containment area. The perimeter is to remain closed to all vessels until SCP-XXXX exits its active state. Protocol VELA has yet to be implemented in the field.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a large deep-sea organism that measures approximately 110 meters in length and resides at a depth of 7000 meters or more. SCP-XXXX is lined with numerous bioluminescent sacs composed of a material seemingly identical to silicon dioxide, though the material has shown resistance to pressure and heat under testing far beyond what would be expected of the compound. The subject’s abdomen appears to be composed of the same substance and is filled with thousands of opaque, spherical objects. Confirmation of the composition of SCP-XXXX’s abdomen as well as the purpose of the objects within has proven impossible, as SCP-XXXX has violently destroyed all vessels or persons attempting to extract samples.

SCP-XXXX produces light via Cherenkov radiation through an unknown nuclear reaction which takes place within its sacs. Exact identification of this process has proven to be so far impossible, as the extreme amounts of gamma and neutron radiation given off by SCP-XXXX prevents direct observation and causes severe degradation to numerous types of equipment. Additionally, attempts to drill beyond the outer layer of the bioluminescent sacs results in SCP-XXXX releasing large amounts of viscous slime from several glands located behind its head. These excretions contain several highly radioactive isotopes. Due to the extreme contamination hazard posed by this substance further attempts to extract samples from SCP-XXXX’s bioluminescent sacs have been suspended.

SCP-XXXX is largely immobile, possessing only vestigial fins for propulsion. It is, however, capable of horizontal movement through manipulation of its buoyancy via unknown means. The creature’s diet or if it even requires external nutrition is unknown, as it has never been observed feeding or producing waste. The internal structure of SCP-XXXX is unknown due to the effects of strong radiation on imaging devices.

SCP-XXXX is capable of entering an “active” state during which it ascends to the surface and greatly increases its radiation output. SCP-XXXX then emits two bright flashes within milliseconds of one another before returning to its inactive state. This active event has only been recorded once by the [REDACTED] satellite on ██/██19██, after which SCP-XXXX became known to the Foundation.
