Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Any instances of SCP-XXXX are to be kept in an on-site research tank with dimensions 50 x 50 x 10 metres, with no more than ten (10) specimens per tank. Tanks are to be joined by 2 x 10 x 2 metre connectors with a magnetically sealed bulkhead at each end, allowing for specimens to travel between tanks.

Tanks should be constructed to resemble the environment in which instances of SCP-XXXX were first discovered. A coral reef, open ocean and kelp forest. Further tanks are ready for construction if any specimens are found outside the already discovered habitats.

Tank water is to be replaced once every two (2) weeks and cleaned twice a month by maintenance personnel with level two (2) or higher clearance. While cleaning is in progress, all SCP-XXXX specimens are to be transferred to an adjacent tank- any non-compliance can be met with force at the discretion of head researcher. Specimens are to be fed mackerel weekly, approximately five (5) kilograms per specimen.

Any new instances of SCP-XXXX discovered are to be secured by the nearest mobile aquatic task force and all evidence of the specimens in public eye are to be seeded as fake.

Description: Believed to be the origin of the 'mermaid' legend, SCP-XXXX specimens are Placodermi humanoids. From their waist down, specimens have elongated fish-like tails resembling various aquatic species. Upwards from their waist specimens resemble primitive hominids, however, in place of skin they are covered in scales, again, resembling various species. SCP-XXXX specimen necks sport four (4) gills, and from the top of the neck along the spine a large spiny dorsal fin protrudes.

Specimen heads have no nose but four (4) holes in which they smell and two (2) large black eyes, approximately ten (10) centimetres in diameter. Specimens have a large mouth and approximately fifty (50) teeth (mostly cuspid in nature). Dissections of dead specimens have found primitive lungs suggesting SCP-XXXX specimens have the ability to survive on land as well as water.

SCP-XXXX specimens are capable of sentient conversation and have communicated to researchers on many occasions- most notably in their native tongue. Other tests have shown incredible problem solving skills and when asked, have recited pi to exactly forty seven thousand, nine hundred and eighty six (47,986) places suggesting incredible memory power and complex mathematics despite lack of evidence for built civilisation. Theories suggest generations of specimens retain all prior knowledge acquired by their ancestors.

SCP-XXXX specimens also become extremely aggressive when their territory is threatened and will attempt to swarm any aggressors and then proceed to [DATA EXPUNGED].
It has also been theorised specimens are a result of many unexplained marine disappearances. Task forces are further enquiring into the possibility of SCP-XXXX specimens in the Bermuda Triangle.

Addendum: Any complaints about SCP-XXXX specimens being held in captivity must be taken up with Dr. Charles Gears. It has been assured that harm will only be inflicted if securely justified.
