Item #: SCP-4XXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: As of 09/██/201█, SCP-4XXX is located at Containment Site 4XXX-B, one of 5 above-ground facilities approximately 50 miles from [REDACTED], Serbia. Sites 4XXX-A through E, while hosting a variety of classified Safe SCPs, including SCP-0███, SCP-20██, and SCP-300█, have been built to contain SCP-4XXX. As such, it is advised that no SCP believed to amplify, neutralize, or corroborate SCP-4XXX's effects be housed at a Site 4XXX for longer than 48 hours.
The top priority for containment of SCP-4XXX is that the light sources in SCP-4XXX-1's containment chamber remain operational. The containment chamber itself uses an array of otherwise standard-issue LED lightbulbs, giving off approximately 1100 Lumens each. Energy output must be carefully monitored, with SCP-4XXX-1's containment chamber and surrounding area to be prioritized over other utilities. Damaged or spent bulbs must be replaced within 30 minutes of notice, or worst case within 24 hours of observed anomalous activity. Containment of SCP-4XXX-1 has so far ensured that the 2 other associated entities/effects are minimized.
All staff at a Site-4XXX are to have their sleep cycles monitored. All activity and night-time observations are to be documented and investigated, especially observations considered anomalous (waking nightmares, night terrors, hallucinations, etc.). There are to be compiled and reviewed by on-site personnel for changes in activity (see Incident Report 4XXX-22). Individuals affected by the effects of SCP-4XXX-2 are to be administered Class-C amnestics within 48 hours.
Any statistically significant uptick in negatively anomalous observations, or else within approximately 6 days of a confirmed SCP-4XXX-2 activation, SCP-4XXX-1 is to be moved to another of the Site-4XXX locations. For the sake of convenience, this would tend to be the next letter in the sequence (i.e. post-incident movement from Site-4XXX-C to Site-4XXX-D). It is advised that lights remain on SCP-4XXX-1 for the duration of this movement, including vehicular transport.
Description: SCP-4XXX is currently understood as 3 entities, heretofore identified as SCP-4XXX-1, SCP-4XXX-2, and SCP-4XXX-3. The relationship between the 3 entities, and whether or not they are simply aspects of fewer than 3 entities, is not currently understood. The 3 entities associated with SCP-4XXX are instead differentiated through their anomalous effects, and the different aspects of those effects.
SCP-4XXX-1 is a wooden bed frame, approximately 130 cm by 180 cm, painted white at its creation. It was uncovered in an abandoned orphanage in the city of [REDACTED], Yugoslavia, and it is believed to date from approximately 17██. Despite the slatted structure of the bed frame, SCP-4XXX-1 cultivates an unusually dark and solid shadow underneath it, sometimes differing in 2000 lumens from ambient or non-anomalous shadows in the vicinity. SCP-4XXX-1's shadow is easily dispersed with LED-generated light, but this is not advised (see Incident Report 4XXX-33).
SCP-4XXX-2 is a designates a phenomenon that, while occurring within the vicinity of SCP-4XXX-1, seems independent of SCP-4XXX-1. When an individual comes in contact with the wood of the bed frame, they will experience a series of voices in the periphery of their hearing. These voices have been described differently based on interviews, and seem to be tailored based on the audience. However, more often than not these voices speak a certain language within the larger Indo-European language family. The voices match similar tones of young children, and repeat a small litany of phrases, the most common of which being "Bau!", identified with an onomatopoeia associated with certain entities in Serbian fairytales. The voices are described as "silent screaming", with a jovial, almost mocking tone. The voices will increase in ferocity and volume at a gradual rate, often at the expense of the victim's mental stability.
SCP-4XXX-3 is an entity that appears within approximately 45 minutes of SCP-4XXX-2 initiation. SCP-4XXX-3 is an arm that seems to appear from within the shadow generated by SCP-4XXX-1. SCP-4XXX-3's point of origin tends to be approximately 65 centimeters from the edge of SCP-4XXX-1's frame, but subsequent testing demonstrates an ability to appear from any strong shadow generated from or around SCP-4XXX-1 (see Incident Report 4XXX-33). The arm has differed between manifestations and experiments, in terms of length of limbs, number of joints, and the size of its terminating hand. Generally, the arm ends in 4 fingers and a thumb, with elongated fingers and blackened skin, which curls like paper at its joints. SCP-4XXX-3 has demonstrated a surprising amount of speed and strength for its gaunt appearance; it has been observed grabbing a mass of up to half a ton, and dragging it 10 meters within 6 seconds.
SCP-4XXX-3 is attracted to children or "child-like" individuals; in fact, while SCP-4XXX-2 occurs for any individual in contact with or in the vicinity of SCP-4XXX-1, SCP-4XXX-3 will only manifest when an individual younger than 10 is within 50 feet of the SCP-4XXX-2 manifestation. SCP-4XXX-3 will generally make a beeline for the young individual, and try to drag them into the shadow underneath SCP-4XXX-1. Returning to the point of origin, this arm will disappear without a trace, along with its unlucky victim.
Addendum 4XXX.1: Incident Report 4XXX-22 Within the first approximately ██ years of containment, SCP-4XXX-1 was classified as "safe", and kept within Site-[REDACTED] as opposed to its own designated sites. Incident is believed to have begun ██/██/19██, following a test of SCP-4XXX-2 on a resident D-class. Within 48 hours of initial testing, there was a significant increase in nightmares and negative hallucinatory experiences amongst the staff, at least as reported through recovered researcher's dream journals and general reports. Archived documentation also indicates a rise in insomnia across Site-[REDACTED], negatively affecting particular tests. Incident 4XXX-22 climaxed within 6 days of the initial test, when at ████ hours on ██/██/19██, Site-[REDACTED] ceased communication with SCP staff at neighboring facilities, prompting investigation. Site-[REDACTED] was found with its doors wide open and all windows smashed; initial containment breach was immediately denied when it was found that only the staff were missing, none of the D-class staff or SCPs. The staff members were all recovered within 2 months - most had suffered extreme mental trauma, and a few had committed suicide in the intermittent period. The D-class left behind had experienced significant brain hemorrhaging over the approximate week, while others complained of "those damned voices" or were nonverbal, only replying to questions with the sound "Bau". Object class was changed to Euclid upon review, and containment procedure research was begun.
Addendum 4XXX.2: Incident Report 4XXX-33 While contained at Site 4XXX-C, much of the containment procedure for SCP-4XXX was refined. Amongst other experimental strategies, it was proposed by resident researcher Dr. Katarina to place SCP-4XXX-1 within a room surrounded with lights, including lights embedded in the floor, in an effort to neutralize the shadow it generates. While the outline of the shadow appeared to remain solid in the bright light, there was a recorded 200 lumen difference in intensity between it and non-anomalous shadows. Subsequent testing recorded that SCP-4XXX-2's effects remained unchanged, but no subsequent emergence of SCP-4XXX-3 took place, even when "baited" with child D-class in the room. However, as Site 4XXX-C awaited O5's approval for SCP-4XXX's object class change to "Safe", there was recorded a significant [REDACTED], leading to serious injury and damage within a ██ radius of its supposed epicenter. Reports indicate that in addition to anomalous events matching those witness in [ACCESS DENIED], SCP-4XXX-3 had technically committed containment breach, by manifesting through strong shadows made by the light emanating from SCP-4XXX-1's containment chamber. At least 1 death was recorded, and containment procedures were again revised.
It was like witnessing madness. The arm was the largest we had ever seen. It had bent in crooked elbows to fill the whole hall going down. God, Emile had been down there moments before… the blood it smeared on its way back… - Resident researcher Dr. Komonov
Addendum 4XXX.3: Exploration 4XXX-42 SCP-4XXX-3 has previously been proven to be easily "fooled" or "baited". Testing has implemented a strategy where a D-class child will be instructed to move once SCP-4XXX-3 manifests, upon which the arm will still follow a straight line and instead grab whatever is behind the child. At a certain point, however, SCP-4XXX-3 appears to "know" that the object it grabbed is not a child, and the object will be ejected from the point of origin.
Following approval, this led to the creation of a research project (Project Bugaboo) intending to discover the point of origin for SCP-4XXX-3. Initial short-range cameras and vision monitors indicated a complete lack of light past SCP-4XXX-3's point of origin; Exploration 4XXX-42 involved a complex echo-locative visualizing apparatus, attached to a child-shaped dummy. The apparatus was successfully "baited", and ejected after approximately 45 minutes, which to this day stands as the longest possible "baiting" of SCP-4XXX-3. The recording remains classified.
