Item #: SCP-2586
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-2586’s dismantled parts are to be stored in seperate containment lockers in Site 38, and placed within opaque containers as to prevent accidental visual exposure. Testing must be approved by researchers with level 3 clearance or higher, and blood tests must be administered for all individuals involved with testing before testing can commence.
Description: SCP-2586 closely resembles an IKEA-brand BOSTRAK-model wardrobe, though it’s colour and material are inconsistent with the standard product. SCP-2586 is constructed of a fibreboard that has proved resistant to testing with forces up to and including 20,000 Newtons, temperatures of up to and including 500 Kelvin and attempted cutting and piercing with numerous blades of surgical sharpness.
Deconstructing of SCP-2586 with regular tools such as conventional screwdrivers is entirely possible, though the memetic hazards still persist, they are dampened considerably when SCP-2586 is in a deconstructed or incomplete state. The level of dampening of the memetic effects has been determined to be directly proportional to how many pieces of SCP-2586 are connected to one another. The screws, hinges, and sticker located on the underside of SCP-2586 have all been determined to be composed of the same material as the fibreboard panelling. SCP-2586 is an almond colour as opposed to it’s stark-white IKEA-brand counterpart.
The sticker reads “KLÖSEM”1.
The anomalous effects of SCP-2586 manifest when visual contact with SCP-2586 is made. Individuals who see SCP-2586 will begin to express a desire to see SCP-2586’s closet doors closed. If the closet is closed when visual contact is made, the individual will express gratitude and state the ‘beauty’ and ‘majesty’ of the closet. If the closet is open, the individual will first state their distaste of the closet, and gradually become more and more irritated with SCP-2586, averaging 47 (forty-seven) seconds before the individual proceeds to close the closet themselves, expressing satisfaction afterwards. Class D personnel will frequently close the doors of SCP-2586 despite being threatened with termination, usually justifying their actions by dismissing the threat.
If an obstacle is placed between an individual and SCP-2586, the individual will relentlessly attempt to pass the obstacle. Subjects have been known to pick locks, kick down doors, and in some cases seriously injure themselves attempting to reach and close SCP-2586. This memetic effect persists indefinitely even after visual contact with SCP-2586 has been lost, and individuals retain the anomalous ability to retain knowledge of SCP-2586’s state years past their testing (see interview log 1A).
These anomalous effects are inverted on individuals with the blood type O-negative, and any individual with this blood type exposed to SCP-2586 will express their desire to have the closet open, often stating it ‘looks better this way’. Because of this, no individual within the foundation with blood type O-negative can view SCP-2586, as it is stored within its closed state, and even the most well-adjusted individuals with this blood type will often resort to extreme measures to ensure that SCP-2586 is opened.
The memetic effects of SCP-2586 remain through disassembly, and its effects will remain operative according to the state SCP-2586 was in at the time of disassembly, although the memetic hazards are noticeably lessened, and take significantly longer to inspire violent behaviour in an individual, sometimes taking months in a disassembled state. In order to initiate another state-change, SCP-2586 must be reassembled and then opened/closed. All individuals affected by SCP-2586 gain an innate knowledge of this procedure, regardless of if they were informed of it or not.
SCP-2586 was discovered after carpenter P████ ████ was offered a large sum of money to deconstruct SCP-25862. The day after work was started, Mr. ████’s body was discovered by a customer with a hacksaw lodged in his skull and numerous cuts consistent with the serration of the saw on his body. Mr. ████’s apprentice was reported missing by his family, likely having fled, and SCP-2586 was found in an open state. Mr. ████’s apprentice was later discovered to be blood type O-negative.
Interview log 1A
Interviewed: Anthony Morais, Field Agent
Interviewer: Belle Kister, Foundation Psychologist
Foreword: Agent Morais was among the agents that brought SCP-2586 into containment, and was unaware of the memetic threat it posed. Two things should be noted regarding this interview, that Agent Morais was stationed at Site 7 at the time of this interview (███ kilometers away from the site where SCP-2586 is contained), and that this interview occurred when testing started, four months after Agent Morais’s exposure to SCP-2586.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Kister: Agent Morais, I apologize that our session today must be recorded, but I have been advised that you may have been exposed to a memetic threat.
Agent Morais: I understand, Doctor.
Dr. Kister: Would you mind stating for the record some of the feelings you’ve had recently, regarding SCP-2586?
Agent Morais: Not at all. Only a few days ago, I started getting the feeling that something was wrong. A lot of anger, a lot of frustration. It was like there was something desperately wrong with something, I couldn’t put my finger on what it was, but I always came back to thinking about the closet. They came in, I guess you’d call them episodes, and they only lasted a minute or so at first, but over the next few days they’ve been getting worse and definitely longer, up until the point where I don’t know how I get through them at this point. I’ve been clear since around twenty-two hundred hours last night though, so that’s a positive.3
Dr. Kister: And you assumed this was post traumatic stress disorder at first, didn’t you?
Agent Morais: At first I assumed it was something of the sort, I’ve seen more than enough in this job, as I’m sure you’ll understand. Either way, I looked up PTSD and the symptoms vaguely lined up, which is why I started seeing you- (at this point Agent Morais’s speech cuts out and his fists clench.)
Dr. Kister: Agent Morais? Is everything okay?
(Agent Morais starts to stand, producing guttural growling sounds. Dr. Kister ends the interview promptly.)
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Agent Morais was treated with Class D amnestics, but they proved ineffective due to the prolonged period of time between first visual contact and administering of amnestics. Officer Morais was discovered dead 1 (one) week after the interview in his dorm, with crudely drawn arrows composed of blood and feces discovered facing in the direction of SCP-2586.
