Item #: SCP-4808
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4808 can be contained within a standard foundation security locker, to which only personnel with level 4 clearance and above are permitted access.
Description: SCP-4808 is a cylindrical dial with a diameter on 3 cm and height of 4.5 cm. Its casing and innards appear to consist of mostly stainless steel, with some components having an unknown composition. Despite the design of SCP-4808 clearly intended to give a high degree of accuracy, there are no marking or measurements present on the device. The only indicator that the device is active, is that it is warm to the touch.
SCP-4808's anomalous properties manifest when it is held or worn by a sentient subject. SCP-4808 seems to be able to modify the difficulty of all actions taken by those in contact with the device. The addition or subtraction of difficulty is dependent upon how far the device has been rotated one way or the other. SCP-4808 does not reset it's setting between uses and has no descernable way of seeing how far it has been rotated, this presents a hazard to those coming into contact with the device after its initial use.
Test 1A - 10/01/2018
Subject: d-1330
Procedure: Subject was placed before a jigsaw puzzle, a Rubik's cube, and a scratch-off lottery ticket. Subject is then instructed to solve the jigsaw puzzle and Rubik's cube within five minutes (subject had already scratched the lottery ticket to reveal a loss).
Results: The subject failed to complete either task remarking on her lack of formal education.
Analysis: These results were expected and were only meant as a baseline.
Test 2A - 10/02/2018
Subject: d-1330
Procedure: Test 1A is replicated, with the subject receiving SCP-4808 this time. Subject is told to rotate the dial on SCP-4808 to the left, as far as possible, before engaging with the puzzles. Subject complies also not letting go of SCP-4808 as instructed before the test. Subject notes that this experiment will go worse than yesterday as she is now one-handed.
Results: Subject complains of back pain and adjusts in her seat, bashing the table by accident in the process. This sends the puzzles and lottery ticket scattering to the floor of the chamber. Upon inspection of the puzzles where they landed, they both appeared solved. The ticket was then picked up by the subject, who commented on the completed puzzles saying that her luck must be turning. Subject proceeded to use the scratch-off ticket but found it to be a loss. Subject seemed indifferent to her successes after the experiment.
Analysis: SCP-4808 does not seem to enhance to attributes of its wielder but alter's the conditions of its immediate environment instead. Tasks reliant on chance to succeed seem unaffected by SCP-4808.
Test 3A - 10/03/2018
Subject: d-1330
Procedure: Test 2A is replicated, though subject is told to turn the dial on SCP-4808 as far right as possible.
Results: As subject attempted to reach for the Rubik's cube, it began glowing white and burned through the testing table and the floor beneath. Subject was distraught but was instructed to continue onto the jigsaw puzzle. As subject grasped a piece, three of her finger's were severed by the now extremely sharp edges of all the pieces. Subject dropped SCP-4808 on the table as she held her damaged hand. The experiment was terminated, and d-1330 had her finger's reattached by medical staff.
Analysis: SCP-4808 does not seem to make tasks impossible while on its most extreme setting, though the tasks must be completed with great care to avoid injury. The task is not necessarily able to be completed by a single subject. This may suggest that SCP-4808 is intended for use by another species, or that the device is aware that tools may be necessary in completion of some tasks.
*4:46 PM 10/04/2018*: A breach resulted from an experiment wherein d-1330 received SCP-4808 and turned the dial all the way to the left against instruction. D-1330 rose from her seat in the testing room and broke through the reinforced door leading out, with nothing but her right arm. In the escape attempt small arms fire and attempts at subduing d-1330 were unsuccessful, resulting from misses and slip-ups on the part of security staff. D-1330 was eventually terminated when she attempted to pass through the containment cell of http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-2059. SCP-4808 was recovered successfully.
Addendum: SCP-4808 is able to overheat and deactivate temporarily under extreme circumstances, see experiment log [REDACTED].
Addendum 2: It seems that the rewards gained from tasks completed under the effects of SCP-4808 are based upon the difficulty imposed by the device, greater rewards being given for greater difficulty and smaller rewards for lesser difficulty. This applies to material rewards as well as internal rewards (such as self-satisfaction or pride).
Addendum 3: SCP-4808 can be utilized to affect any task as long as the goal is clear within the users mind.
