A specimen of lumbricus terrestris, believed to be spawned by SCP-XXXX
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class:
Special Containment Procedures:
Description: SCP-XXXX refers to the anomalous phenomenon to which the existence of most organisms belonging to the phylum Annelida, commonly known as earthworms, is attributed. As of ██/██/20██, global earthworm populations are within the range of ██ and ███ quadrillion. The portion of earthworms thought to be born through non-anomalous means is thought to be less than 2 percent of this figure.
Earthworms themselves have been studied extensively by the Foundation and non-Foundation helminthologists. Specimens found in environments where worms are not biologically capable of living have mostly been found dead. In some cases, worms in these environments have been unique to the point of belonging to a new species of earthworm. Currently, there are 63█ known species of earthworm believed to have been formed as a result of SCP-XXXX, 4█ of which are unknown to the public. As evidenced by the previous sentences, earthworms born as a result of SCP-XXXX are genetically diverse and capable of being born with unique mutations. Worms formed in this way already have a microbiome of bacteria and other microscopic organisms inside them, even in locations absent of such lifeforms. Based on data from soil surveys, all earthworms created by SCP-XXXX are most likely created in their adult stage.
As of ██/██/1962, of 25,607 locations surveyed on all seven continents, including 1,839 islands in every ocean, wild earthworms have been located in all of them. Notable locations surveyed include several coastal and inland Antarctician research bases and Foundation sites, as well as remote, unpopulated islands thought to be inaccessible to earthworms. See Addendum XXXX-1 for a list of unusual locations thought to be affected by SCP-XXXX.
Currently, SCP-XXXX is believed to spawn earthworms in any land that humans have set foot on, and such worms are able to slowly spread the area of effect by long-term inhabitance.

Addendum XXXX-2: ██th Annual North American Site Directors New Designations Conference
//The following is part of a transcript from a 1897 site directors conference held in ███████████, Illinois. The transcript is from a discourse regarding the yet-uncatalogued SCP-XXXX. //
Dr. C█████: If everyone would please turn to page 84 of your handouts, I would like to discuss the designation of SCP-███.
Dr. E█████: That one about the worms? We already determined that to be non-anomalous.
Dr. C█████: This particular file slipped through the archivists when we initially acquired it at Fort Knox. Take a look at that file and the one on the next page.
Dr. N████: Where did you get this?
Dr. C█████: It was a document provided by our friends at the IGAMEA. The next page was found in a dumpster outside a Prometheus Labs site in Milwaukee.
Dr. E█████: The dumpster?
Dr. C█████: Yes, Arthur, the dumpster. And the Rosetta Stone was found on the side of a road. Now if you will, allow me to explain the significance of these.
Dr. T████: I don't see the reason to reconsider this case. We made it clear last year that ███ most likely has a perfectly reasonable explanation that simply has yet to be discovered.
Dr. C█████: One could make that argument for any one of our anomalies! The evidence I've brought here shows that the ASCI was not alone in believing this abnormality was worth investigation. You cannot argue it is not anomalous just because it doesn't break your neck or make you go mad.
Dr. N████: We'll send these to the labs and hear what they have to say, but the mating practices of worms do not constitute an anomaly to be contained. Do not bring this up next year.
