Digital reproduction of SCP-5609
Object class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5609 should be mounted vertically on a wall and stretched over a 678 mm x 630 mm area. It should be placed under a constant source of light. The light level should not exceed 2000 lux, and should not be lower than 1500 lux. A garden bed must be placed under SCP-5609, containing only grass of the species poa pratensis. Once a day, one D-class personnel should mow that grass to a length between 0.5 cm and 1 cm. Barring emergency, no other individual is permitted to be in the presence of SCP-5609. All mowed grass must be burnt immediately.
Description: SCP-5609 is the 1906 painting ‘Demeter Mourning For Persephone’ by English artist Evelyn De Morgan. SCP-5609 was acquired from a museum in ████████, after curators noted strange, constant floral and fungal growth in a 5-meter radius around the artwork. SCP-5609 was brought to the Foundation’s attention when an instance of this growth resulted in the injury of a staff member at the museum. The wing of the museum that housed SCP-5609 was promptly closed to the public, at which point Foundation researchers were able to procure the art piece.
Growths spawned by SCP-5609 can take the form of any plant species. Seeds brought into the vicinity of SCP-5609 will undergo rapid germination, regardless of the presence of outside factors such as water or fertilizer. Growths will spawn specimens of the closest plant species, but if no plant life is already present within a 20 m radius, species will spawn at random, using any plant proteins found within said radius. The strength and hostility of the growths are dependent on the species of the plants, as listed in Table 1.01.
Table 1.01:| Species | D-class assigned | Effects |
| Kentucky Bluegrass | D-1284 | Remained in a docile state despite moderate overgrowth. |
| Hybrid tea rose | D-3429 | Sharpness of thorns increased significantly when in contact with human skin. |
| Morning glory | D-2263 | Vines grew rapidly, constricting the neck and limbs of D-2263, as well as cameras in the containment chamber. Experiment aborted. D-2263 was safely retrieved. |
| Venus flytrap | D-6015 | Closing power and speed of leaf blades significantly increased. The specimen also gained a boosted digestive ability, owing to an increase in the potency of mucus secretions. D-6015 exited the containment chamber before completing the experiment, and was reassigned. |
| Pomegranate | D-5902 | Upon attempting to consume the pomegranate seeds, D-5902 reported an intense feeling of nausea followed by [REDACTED]. D-5902 was terminated shortly afterwards. Foundation personnel are hereby prohibited from bringing pomegranates into contact with SCP-5609. |
Addendum 01: While performing maintenance on SCP-5609 on ██/██/████, D-1284 reported the presence of a piece of paper pinned behind the frame of SCP-5609. The paper was inscribed with an Ancient Greek script, written in an unidentifiable medium. When translated, the script read ‘I miss you.’
