Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: Object is kept in a standard containment cell for inanimate objects. It must be kept in the appropriate sheath while also remaining covered in cloth. Additionally, the object, coverings and all, must be kept in a locked container unless it has been approved for testing.
Description: The object is a sword known as Kusanagi no Tsurugi, the famed sword of Japanese folklore. Originally housed in the Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, the Foundation acted on folklore describing the sword's origin and abilities by relocating it to the nearest Site for testing. Soon after the object was captured, its appearance was determined and a replica was made and put in the sword's place. Testing has established that the folklore was accurate and the sword does in fact have anomalous properties, leading to an SCP designation and appropriate containment protocols being enacted.
The sword's primary anomalous properties present themselves when the sword is swung. Through unknown means, whenever the sword is exposed to the air and moved, the air in the immediate vicinity of the weapon moves with it and retains its momentum even after the sword has stopped moving. The speed, direction, and orientation the weapon is moved determines how the air around it is moved. A secondary anomalous effect is that the sword can only be used or even looked upon by a member of the Imperial Household of Japan. It is suspected that this preference is due to the mythological origins of the weapon, as the sword was owned by the Sun goddess of Shintoism, Amaterasu, and was given to her descendants, who became the first emperors of Japan. Therefore, the sword can only be used by individuals belonging to that family. Anyone who is not a direct descendent of the Emperors of Japan will rapidly deteriorate in the months after viewing the sword, typically ending in death. The mechanism through which this is achieved is not known, but the affected individuals appear to suffer from a form of asphyxiation, which gradually gets more severe until the death of the individual. If individuals not in the family of the Emperors attempt to use the sword, it will not work for them and they will die through different means (see Testing Log XX-XXX).
