Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a room or container with walls covered in a scaled surface. The scales should be at least 5 mm deep and spaced less than .01 mm apart. No personnel are to come into contact with SCP-XXXX or any reproduction or image of SCP-XXXX. Visual observation of SCP-XXXX is inadvisable, but acceptable provided personnel do not come into contact with SCP-XXXX and are subjected to psychological screening previous to viewing. Individuals attempting to copy down SCP-XXXX on physical media or digitally so that SCP-XXXX is depicted visually should be administered an amnestic and forbidden further visual access to SCP-XXXX. In case of the expansion of SCP-XXXX, personnel are to report the incident to a superior and activate standard emergency protocols. Under no circumstances should SCP-XXXX be copied or any flat surface come into contact with SCP-XXXX.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a pattern 3 meters tall by 5 meters long interposed on a whiteboard 1.2 meters tall by 1.8 meters long resting on a whitewashed slab of plaster 5 meters long, 3 meters tall, and 1/8 meters thick. The pattern is inscribed in ink from a black dry-erase expo marker, and cannot be removed from the surface it is present on by application of: water, conventional wall-cleaning substances, industrial strength cleaning fluid, and other common solvents. The surface SCP-XXXX is interposed upon is unanomalous in nature, and is subject to damage, defacement, and destruction in all areas not in contact with SCP-XXXX. All surfaces in direct contact with SCP-XXXX, however, cannot be destroyed by all tested conventional methods.
The anomalous area of SCP-XXXX is a detailed, recursive, and infinitely self-similar mathematical set. The origin of the pattern itself is unknown. SCP-XXXX derives its anomalous properties from the pattern itself, not the composition of the surface it is interposed upon or the substance it is composed of. It is presumed that any copies of SCP-XXXX would also manifest anomalous properties.
SCP-XXXX shows mild cognitohazard effects in a limited array of fields, including but not limited to abstract mathematicians and linguists. Observation of SCP-XXXX by these fields creates a mild obsession with the pattern. Psychoanalysis of individuals that have observed SCP-XXXX indicates a sense of awe in observers with some level of expertise in the pattern of SCP-XXXX. While seemingly unanomalous and mostly harmless, observers of SCP-XXXX could potentially have a propensity to copy down SCP-XXXX, likely creating a new instance of SCP-XXXX. Individuals showing this propensity should be administered to as detailed in the Special Containment Protocols.
When in contact with a surface whose curvature is less than 45 degrees, SCP-XXXX grows and spreads on the surface it is in contact with at a uniform rate of 2 cm per second with lines spreading from the edges of SCP-XXXX. The expansion of SCP-XXXX coincides with the simultaneous accumulation of multiple small anomalies into a large, broad-based, complete failure of major systems. It is unknown whether the expansion of SCP-XXXX causes such failures, or merely coincides with them, given that most of the smaller anomalies originate from before the expansion of SCP-XXXX.
