Item #: SCP-XXXX Infinite Improbability, Fortuna
Object Class: After months of heated debate between research staff and MTF agents, anomaly has been classed as Keter. Any attempt to have this anomaly reclassified as Thaumiel will be denied.
Special Containment Procedures: XXXX is an ephemeral entity, so by her nature difficult to contain. She is believed to be somehow one with spacetime, and is reclusive from the general public, though gradually becoming more open with Foundation personnel. Efforts should be made to restrict information about her from public view. Agents are to monitor news stories involving improbable accidents and surveillance feeds and theft reports from towns with large casino or gambling presences. Agents are also to monitor extreme sports activities, natural or manmade disasters and high stakes search and rescue operations or any event with a lot of people, press and a high risk activity going on. Some more violent events this anomaly has affected in the past include a hostage situation, a large scale shootout, and active warfare. Satellites with built in video recording and photographic capability have been designated for use by agents and researchers assigned to this SCP, and are available upon request.
Under no circumstances are agents or researchers to make specific requests from XXXX for assistance in their research or aid in their activities. Attempts to do so will be reviewed, and consequences can include termination if they're believed to warrant it. Research into XXXX can be halted by a majority vote from 05 council at any time. Agents and researchers are not to engage in unprovoked acts of violence around this SCP, and may assume her to be present and/or watching a Research Site within a week before or after she appears within the Area of Operations of a Mobile Task Force assignment. Prayers or thoughts asking for help when one's life is in danger may draw her attention to Foundation Operations and critically injured staff, triggering a benevolent action from this entity. But specific requests will draw her ire. She has also been known to frequent our infirmaries after an MTF operation, checking on and engaging in conversation with injured MTF agents.
Description: Most of the time SCP XXXX remains hidden from observation when active, though she seems to have become emotionally attached somehow to MTF operations. When visible, XXXX takes the form of an aparition of a woman, silver in color who's specific features are blurred. Despite this, eyes, nose and mouth are clearly discernible. She wears jewelry made from pieces from games associated with both strategy and chance, and which are well established symbols in the public mind. The parts used to make this jewelry frequently correspond with thefts of spare parts and game pieces from Casinos and tournaments with a cash prize, with Las Vegas being the most frequent city hit.
XXXX operates by causing unlikely quantum events to occur, typically in small ways that cause a big change to a particular situation. For example, causing 049's surgical tools to turn into candy or sending a deer running through an area of operation as a distraction, causing agents to narrowly avoid seeing 096's face. Because her powers operate by manipulating matter on the quantum level, and because of her non corporeal nature, XXXX defaults to a Keter classification, despite a brief campaign by several members of different MTFs to have her qualified as Thaumiel.
Areas affected by SCP XXXX will frequently show odd hot and cold voids on infrared scanning and targeting displays with these areas capable of becoming hot or cold enough to physically cause damage to flesh and disrupt local weather patterns. It is theorized this damage could be indirectly used to incapacitate SCPs with high regenerative ability or resistance to damage, though the subject is uncooperative and the extent of her abilities is not proven. The heat and cold generated as a side effect of her powers can reach seriously damaging levels to her surroundings and the severity of this depends on how overt and outrageous the use of her powers is.
SCP XXXX will appear to a random MTF squad once every few months, and may follow them or staff at the site they are stationed at for up to two weeks. Though the amount of time is not consistent from visit to visit. For this reason, any staff who reports a sighting of her is to take notes and/or sit for an interview at the earliest possible moment. XXXX’s voice can vary in volume and her speech can vary in focus. It's believed that the more areas she's active in, the less focused she becomes on conversation. During times of severe disaster she can become unresponsive to questioning or stimuli if she's attempting to take action elsewhere. The degree to which she can split her attention seems to be limited in scope. But when responsive she is frequently amenable to conversation.
XXXX’s behavior is very distinctive and can be used to track her movements. She has an unusual attraction to first responders and risky endeavors, and this is believed to be what called the Foundation MTFs to her attention. She has a particular disdain and disgust for individuals, including SCPs, that actively target innocent third parties, calling them selfish and occasionally becoming quite vengeful and vicious. It is MTF operations concerning these SCPs, or MTF operations that are about to fail due to overwhelming force, that seem to draw her attention to the foundation the most.
Many of the most infamous SCPs draw her scorn in proportion to their body count or number of high level breaches and she may show up to 'save' Foundation staff during a breach by 'steering' anomalies away from them. She does not kill them, and refuses to express remorse unless her interference has had the unintentional consequence of taking an unrelated life. She is frequently willing to jump into the middle of a containment breach to attack violent anomaly entities, which can cause unintended casualties. After such instances, XXXX has articulated that she has a lost control of her temper and the intended target’s actions made her angry. In such cases, the marks of her attack appear to have had sections of matter dematerialize with an extremely clean edge to the wounds, and the edge of such wounds will be visibly singed. Analysis shows that its likely she broke the molecular bonds of the target piece of matter.
She is able to disrupt other dimensional phenomena for a short time but displays a low level of success in doing so. See attached document concerning an incident taking place on //__ during an attempted Serpent’s Hand breakout in which the Way they laid out to escape ceased to function upon them coming to Fortuna’s notice. It's believed she came close to the location the Way had been activated in, and her close proximity and frustration over a previous encounter caused her to accidentally disrupt the Way and force it closed. This resulted in the capture of one of the Serpent’s Hand agents responsible for the breach.
Because she has an effect on matter at the quantum level XXXX can cause a wide range of disruption, including minor cognito hazardous effects, and leaves behind traces similar to those of a reality bender.
XXXX displays a fairly weak hume disturbence level when powers are activated and this dissipates quickly when her abilities cease functioning in an area. The hume disturbances seem to follow within a few seconds of her powers being activated, acting more like waves leaving marks in beach sand or the shocks after an earthquake than a permanent mark. They follow after her power use within a second or two in short sharp bursts that emanate outwards from the disturbance.
However, she refuses to use her power when asked in the way that's asked, and has even caused unlikely unlucky events to occur when researchers have attempted to press the issue, stating that "The greatest heroes never ask for recognition, they protect because its their instinct to do so" and that "I favor the bold, not the selfish." And she has a disdain for having to utilize her powers in a way that seems ridiculous or comical, despite clearly being able to do so and the outcomes being favorable.
One of the more disturbing but subtle methods of action that XXXX is able to use is to trigger brief hallucinations and to damage living tissue by manipulating the molecules of said tissue or energy inherent in brain synapses as needed. The former can be used to deliver a warning, or influence a person's decision making when making a critical decision. For example causing a person who was planning to go right to go left instead, away from a dangerous situation. This tendency when influencing persons to steer them away from danger is frequently counter productive to Foundation operations, as it often results in agents moving away from a targeted SCP or individual who could cause them serious bodily harm. This "for their own good" attitude is counter productive to foundation goals, which often involve moving towards danger instead of taking the safer action.
This ability doesn't fall into the classic example of a cognito hazard, but people who are immune to cognito hazards are immune to her. However, as with the hume disturbances that follow her, they seem to be a minor ability, one that is controlled via quantum level matter control rather than outright mind control. Unlike many cognito hazardous entities, XXXX will not use this ability on a person who has asked her to stop. It can, however, manifest if subject attempts a non specific disruptive action on a small scale, regardless of intention.
XXXX is able to inflict physical damage by herself, but prefers to manipulate circumstances so that someone else does so for her. At foundation agents' request, she has adopted a frequent signature that she leaves when she needs to identify where she's been, the number 42, either as a burned or frozen mark on a nearby surface, or by leaving 42 of an object or an object displaying that number in the immediate vicinity.
Researchers with heavy physics backgrounds have put forth the theory that XXXX is able to cause a hypothetical anomaly called a Boltzmann Brain to manifest, or may be one herself. However, a Boltzman brain has never been found before. And so the Foundation lacks the statistical sample size required to make this distinction.
In cases where another human is behind a dangerous circumstance, or the anomaly causing it is in a position where it is unable to be observed, she is unable to give specifics of the situation or show others where the individual is despite being able to sense their presence. It seems that she loses her ability to speak, this may indicate a disruption of cognition if she attempts to give away their position.
XXXX is able to shed light on the emotional state of such entities however. For example she cannot see SCP 076-2 (Abel) when he's in his tomb, but she can sense his emotional state and frequently refers to his tomb as "your big black box of rage and murder" when Abel is the topic of conversation. Her descriptions of other SCPs are often colorful and frequently vulgar, and her descriptions are often either mocking or painfully blunt, hitting the nail on the head so to speak. They are not limited to malevolent SCPs either. Examples including "Beaky boi" (049), "Shit statue" (173), "Yarn slug" (1867), "Puke people" (610), "Giggle boi" (999) ect.
Addendum: The following notes are undersigned by a number of high ranking staff, with the title "XXXX - Fortuna: Keter vs Thaumiel."
Due to the ethereal qualities of SCP XXXX we believe that she fails the segment of the Locked Box test used to determine thaumiel eligibility and would like to express our annoyance of those agents and researchers who would like to nominate her for this classification. Your applications and reasoning are unprofessional, and you do not seem to register the implications of her abilities.
The ability to affect matter and localized space time is not an ability we at the foundation like to see in open use. Fortuna has shown herself to generally have good judgement in how to apply her powers. It is better to operate around her and conceal her activities rather than try to bend her to our will or turn her powers into a show. We will continue to try and find a way to contain her. There is concern however that attempts to contain her, if failed, might result in substantial property damage or loss of life.
To point to how powerful she is when provoked, we would like to remind you that she's able to interfere with some of the most feared SCPs and some of our most advanced containment systems seemingly with impunity and is able to cause severe structural damage as a side effect, not a main effect, of her powers. And we would like to avoid provoking her into causing a containment breach because researchers couldn't be more calculating or decided her powers were good for a laugh.
The Foundation keeps a number of horrible things under its proverbial cloak (see procedure 110 Montauk as an example), including things Fortuna would definitely consider morally objectionable. We do not want a creature with both a conscience and a powerful ability like hers to have reason to attack the Foundation when we cannot physically contain her. Referring to the locked box test again, we cannot even grab her to shove her into the box for the test.
Research and Interview Logs
Interviewed: SCP XXXX aka Fortuna
Interviewer: MTF Lieutenant Damascus, MTF Zeta 9 Mole Rats
Foreword: recorded via concealed body cam within agent's nearby body armor, hanging on the nearby wall, while Agent was recovering from compound leg and rib fractures sustained during field operations. Infirmary was dark to encourage the interviewing agent to rest.
Lieutenant Damascus is currently attempting to gain approval for his own MTF group, and thus is under increased command scrutiny from command at multiple sites. He may no longer be in Zeta 9 when reading this entry if a large amount of time has passed since the file was created, and so searches for his contact information should be by code name rather than by MTF Unit.
<Begin Log>
Damascus: I knew it, knew I was being followed. Who are you, what do you want?
XXXX: A woman can't be curious?
Damascus: Clearly you aren't a woman. Women aren't made of silver mist. Now WHO. ARE. YOU?
XXXX: I don't like names. The Romans gave me several. Fortune they called me. I don’t like the name, but it stuck.
Damascus: How'd you manage to find us?
XXXX: I followed a prayer for help. I was too late it seems.
Damascus: Not entirely. We got 'em back intact and saved one of 049's intended victims from being… messed with. Not to mention the look on his face when you turned his tools into jelly beans, that's going to be a fish tale for years to come! But did you have to… be so vicious? He'll be bedridden for a few weeks!
XXXX: He deserves worse for what he did to that family. They did nothing to him. He chose them because they were in his path. Pestilence my ass, there is no pestilence! I'd do it again and worse.
Damascus: and the burns? the table spontaneously dehydrated, charred and splintered and the roof tiles shattered to dust.
XXXX: I can't stop that. My powers don't work from nowhere. The bigger the event, the more damage to the surrounding environment. In this case I wanted to remove his weapons and strengthen yours. I had to input energy from the environment to make that happen. I needed molecules from the table and to vaporize or move the molecules in his surgical kit to another location or form. See for yourself. *gestures, and causes a large white cotton bath towel to drop from the ceiling onto the agent's lap* Thats from the infirmary sto…
*ice crystals erupt on the sides of a nearby cabinet, causing a shower of wood shrapnel which Damascus shields himself from with his arm.*
Damascus: I see that, well thanks… I guess… that's one helluva laugh that mission ended on. Can you do more?
XXXX: Not for you to say. Now I believe there's a ten car pileup one county over about to happen that requires my attention.
The apparition seems to dissolve, losing cohesion and bursting apart. However she reappears some hours later on the camera. The look on her face appears to be a dark scowl.
Damascus: I didn't mean it as a request, you know that right?
XXXX: *face softens, awkwardly* ah… I have to be careful. In the past I've been mistaken for everything from a goddess of victory to a jinn. It gets annoying and tiring. "Give me this" "Give me that" "Smite my enemies" "Make her love me." all of them are morons! You can't contain or control luck! It comes to you or it doesn't. Every gambler who's ever had a system just doesn't understand me I suppose. And a lot of them are gamblers at heart even if they don’t play traditional games of chance.
Damascus: no no, not to profit, we study people like you, and your powers seem so… odd. We have very resilient or very damaging individuals locked up here but they're generally not talkative and we've never seen someone specifically like you.
XXXX: Not comforting, to be honest. And I like being social, people just want to use me most of the time. As for my nature, you know, I can actually give myself headaches trying to figure that out or if I split or overuse my powers too much. I don't have a body though… phantom headaches? Like phantom limb pain? It's a lot easier if I use someone else as a proxy or channel. Or an item. I can channel myself through metal objects quite well.
Damascus: So what… my tanto were a channel to damage 049? That does something? You know he can kill with a touch right?
XXXX: Which is why I empowered your limbs, at all times there was a shockwave and or a dense cushion of air molecules between your skin and his robes. As for channeling, essentially, it helps me, not you. If I can use someone else as a focus all my senses become better. My cognition increases too. If I use an object as a focus I don't have to be thinking about maintaining my powers at that object location. I still have to think to be able to use my powers. I can think faster and with more capacity than a human… but I still have to think. Its not controlling people, I’m watching you through your eyes but I can’t make you do anything, only react.
Damascus: but are there any limits? besides focus? at the Foundation we um… we're not fond of letting things; powers or entities run unchecked, even well meaning ones are viewed with suspicion. My bosses might get… annoyed… if you just pop in willy nilly for a chat.
XXXX: Heat, energy… I'm bound by entropy you know. I have to expend energy to change things. It uses less energy to send an animal from the nearby area careening through a battle than it does to drop a sperm whale on it. For the surgical tools I changed, I had to borrow atoms from the table and swap them with the metal. Wood can be changed into sugar quite easily, mushrooms do it all the time.
Damascus: I see… *yawn* damnit, sedatives and heat. I don't want to sleep yet, my brain still has to figure out all this.
XXXX: you have plenty of time. *reaches out for the towel from earlier and touches it.* Infrared reading shows heat blooming across the towel surface at about the same temperature as hot tap water.
Damascus: *falls asleep with the towel across his chest*
After action interview log
Interviewer: Dr. Hoyle (Lt. Damascus’ immediate supervisor)
Interviewee: SCP 049
For the purposes of medical treatment, 049’s bindings have a little more slack than normal, allowing him to sit up if he needs to. The medical bed bedside table has several potted lavender plants and bouquets in vases on it. There’s no glass that could be used as a sharp edge if broken. Lavender essential oil, a diffuser, lavender incense and matches are available for 049’s use in a basket by his bedside. A number of assistants enter behind Doctor Hoyle carrying scanners. Doctor Hoyle enters, leaning on a heavy looking walking stick.
Hoyle: Damn that looks nasty… my name is Doctor Edwin Hoyle. Your reputation doesn’t need an introduction so I’ll get right to the point.
049: I can respect that, you want to examine my wounds, yes? Several doctors have already done so with an eye to research, I don’t feel like moving at the moment. I won’t resist. They are quite painful.
Hoyle: Yes I do and thank you. While the assistants set up the equipment, I’ve already got Damascus’ point of view at what happened.
049: (disappointed) Oh the zero seventy six fanboy…
Hoyle: (chuckles) Yes, he does tend to get a bit starry eyed when Omega 7 is in town. (Hoyle props a number of pillows under 049’s head so that they can face each other.)
049: I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’m a few centuries old. I raised my scalpels to strike, and they dropped out of my hands, turning into candy of all things! My fingers became extremely stiff from cold, like I’d shoved my bare hands in a snowdrift. It stung and burned. I examined my fingers when they got me back into containment. They appear to have endured physically damaging levels of cold. I will need time to fix the damage, unlike some of the others you may have seen who can regenerate rapidly at will or on instinct, I need to actively treat myself to regenerate from an injury like this.
Hoyle: May I see your hands?
049: Of course. You know you can’t touch them right?
Hoyle: (matter of factly) Not my first rodeo. We’ll also need samples of your robes. Please let me know if the sample taking causes discomfort.
Several assistants begin clipping small shreds from the edges of 049’s robe for trace and microscopic analysis.
049: (removes his gloves and holds out his hands for Doctor Hoyle to see) My cloak behaves similar to a crow’s feathers, it does not have nerve endings. Its connection to my body does however. That specific area is quite sensitive to touch and vibration.
Hoyle: (examines the skin carefully) These look like boils.
049: (visibly forces his body to relax as the assistants go about their work.) They were ice crystals. I am unsure as to the exact target, whether it was my tools or my hands or both. I heard a female irritated voice growling and calling me the usual insults, murderer, butcher, ecetera. But the female MTF agent in the party was not speaking. They were content to block my escape, and allow the Fanboy to rend chunks out of me. To his credit, Damascus was quite precise with his blows. He came nowhere near anything vital or debilitating.
Hoyle: We found the environmental damage from the transmutation, but did you notice anything else, besides the MTF and your… (hesitates in disgust) patients?
049: I heard a female voice yelling in rage, calling me murderer and monster and things of that nature. I thought it was the little girl that I was administering my cure to when I was caught, that she was somehow anomalous and my cure was interacting with her powers somehow. But now, I have my doubts.I was too far off guard by the experience to be honest, or I’d have thrown a scalpel at Damascus’ eyes. I can fight. I’m not a pushover. I just don’t typically choose to, do no harm after all.
The scientists finish taking their readings and begin to disassemble the equipment. Doctor Hoyle finishes his notation.
Note: SCP 049’s cloak had huge gouges made by XXXX’s effect channeled through agent Damascus’ duel tanto. His fingers appeared to have had ice directly frozen from the flesh. 049 is not forthcoming about the treatments he is using to repair the damage and has rejected the offer for material to produce and assistance in producing skin grafts.
The following surveillance footage was taken from 076's containment chamber date //__…
The security camera shows the box containing 076 slowly sliding open amid the breach warning sirens, his hand reaches around the side and…
… the box slams shut and opens repeatedly on 076's fingers, breaking them and trapping them in place. Containment procedures kick in, flooding the chamber and approach with sea water. Several sections of the above shaft freeze to ice and when a second attempt is made to escape…
… the box slams repeatedly shut again, this time on 076's wrist. After twenty or so blows, a spear of ice slices through 076's wrist, pinning him and immobilizing one hand, pinning it to the outside wall of Abel's tomb.
A silver feminine figure is briefly seen on camera, wagging her finger at 076. Her mouth forms the words. "uh uh uh, play nice."
The hand that's visible struggles, finally flipping the bird at the figure before it falls limp.
The ice spear twists and the figure's mouth forms the words "naughty naughty, where's the soap when you need it?"
There's a pause. "What? I can't hear over the sound of your murderous rage! Cool it bro seriously!" Another ice spear shoots through the water, slicing through Abel's casket right down the middle.
All attempts at escape cease. activity monitors in the chamber show that 076 is paralyzed by the ice spear, which is showing no signs of melting.
Within five minutes a robot drone was scrambled to go down 076's shaft to see what was going on.
Robot footage shows multiple ice spears and chunks blocking the way down the shaft. It passes the silvery figure, turning to get a good look at the ethereal features, only the eyes, mouth and nose are clear enough to see detail. The camera makes note of jewelery made from corporeal objects, specifically a tiara made with poker chips, (recording what casino they belonged to by the stamp) and earrings made of dice before moving on.
When it reaches the casket, the robot begins to take footage of everything, top to bottom, first from the outside. By the time it arrives, 076-2 is speared by ice through the chest, wrists, and about thigh level. As the robot swims into the casket to take a look, its camera and lights illuminate the damage. 076 has been speared through the wrists, femoral arteries, and heart. As the robot reaches his face, and the light and camera pan upon it, one baleful eye glares at the robot in the darkness. There's a rush of movement, a flash of teeth, and with the only weapons left to him Abel bites the robot, breaking it.
Addendum: On a more constructive note, a number of more mathematics inclined staff members, including two agents from Asimov's Law Bringers and a D Class known for his card counting have volunteered their skills in crunching statistics for use in analyzing this SCP. Please review their letters volunteering their skills and contact me to figure out scheduling. I know we're all quite busy. Further volunteers are welcome should more data come in and their work permit. Just try to approve folks of a more rational sort alright?
Creator's notes: Fortuna is made primarily for people to use in tales or as a source of buffs in roleplay. But she also came out of trying to wrap my head around the more resilient scps from series one like the Lizard or Shy Guy and from my first time reading the book "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy." Despite the fact that I like a lot of the series 1 creatures, this is the one stick in my craw with them. I had trouble putting limits on her powers and I felt that going the same route as "The Deer'' wasn't good enough, so I made a creature bound by thermodynamics and the processing power of a somewhat superhuman mind. Manipulating quantum physics and probability could turn out to be as dangerous as it is whacky. And I hope that more creative, less trolly sorts can come up with entertaining tales using her exploits for comedy as well as fright and action. Explore her powers, think of the implications, and if you need to use her to bash an "ultra resilient" SCP, she's game for a few rounds of "Super smash lizard".
The three log examples I gave are meant to illustrate the way the anomaly behaves in conversation and how she operates in a combat environment. Pretty sure she falls into keter class by default because she can't be grabbed. But I wanted to muck with the item class debate in universe partially because I was worried my Keter classification out of character would be disputed. And I wanted to play with that anxiety in the document itself to quiet my nerves.
