Item: SCP-4470
Object Class: Euclid
SCP-4470 being introduced to its containment cell in 4/21/20██
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4470 is to be contained in a Special humanoid containment cell at Site-██. SCP-4470 is allowed to wander freely around the site as it is accompanied by it's "hands" at all times. Due to limitations of its avian body, SCP-4470 requires a staff member to act as it's "hands", such candidates are to be chosen by the entity, currently, Junior Researcher James Cartwright holds this position. SCP-4470 is to feed three times a day with its species preferred diet listed below, however, exceptions can be made by its request, grit must be left optional by every meal. Its cell must be cleaned by a single janitorial staff once every 4-5 days, accompanied by it's "hands". Physical contact with the SCP-4470 is strictly forbidden outside of testing and/or via his "hands". The furnishing and appliances are listed below:
- Two (2) wooden bookcases 24.3"L x 12.4"W x 32"H stocked with novels, dictionaries, science books, and certain comics in multiple languages.
- One (1) large dog bed with extra padding and a fleece blanket that is washed once a week.
- A 30 x 20 x 12" wooden coffee table with four accompanying bean bags, interviews with the entity most often take place here.
- A 49 inch flat-screen TV atop a 30.5"L x 16.3"W x 25"H cabinet containing a Playstation 4 console, films, TV shows, documentaries, and video games for enrichment.
Description: SCP-4470 is an adult male specimen of Raphus cucullatus or Dodo bird standing roughly 1 meter in height. Its external appearance is physically and genetically identical to non-anomalous specimens. SCP-4470 is far-sighted and while it vision matches that of many other birds objects within 4 feet of it, this issue has been with a custom set of "working" goggles that are equipped and removed by its "hands". SCP-4470 has a large olfactory bulb, giving it an acute sense of smell which the entity uses to identify unseen objects, persons, and food. SCP-4470's diet consists of fruits, nuts, seeds, as well as small crustaceans and insects which are easily dispatched with the aid of its enlarged beak. Digestion is aided with small stones in which SCP-4470 stores in its gizzard.
SCP-4470's internal structure, however, has been heavily altered and is the source of its anomalous properties. A complex network of wires and cords connected directly to the entity's vital organs, blood vessels, and nervous system. The wires stem from a large mechanical device located at the base of the spine, it's composition is currently unknown. The device has been classified as SCP-4470-1. Throughout its containment, SCP-4470 has claimed that SCP-4470-1 is an integrable part of its anatomy and does not cause it any pain or discomfort. While it has yet to share any notable information on device's more obscure powers, its more practical abilities are well understood.
SCP-4470 possesses a permeable force-field that renders the entity nearly invulnerable to kinetic and concussive damage. This process is achieved by reversing the energy output back into its source; if said damage is dealt via projectile or physical assault, the attack will be reflected back toward the user resulting in injuries ranging from minor bruises to lethal physical trauma. The mechanisms behind this defense are poorly understood as blood samples can be taken without triggering the defense and SCP-44470 is displaced proportionally to the impact, but doesn't express pain or distress during the field's activation.
SCP-4470 is capable of teleporting at a seemingly infinite distance so long as there is a suitable landing point. The performs this action by jumping in place before disappearing into a cloud of glowing red smoke and feathers. The entity maps these locations with an ingrained GPS system combined with its natural homing instincts. SCP-4470 seems to us little energy during these 'jumps' and has demonstrated the ability to transport up to 3 living subjects with it at a time.
As stated before, SCP-4470 is sapient and capable of speech and can translate nearly every known language such as English, French, Latin, Polynesian, Spanish, as well as languages that were previously unknown. Interviews with SCP-4470 have proven to be very informative and has provided indispensable information on poorly known SCP objects, anomalies, and history in general. The entity is generally docile and cooperative toward Foundation staff, displaying a charismatic and sophisticated nature. This, combined with its other useful properties, has led to SCP-4470 becoming an invaluable asset to the Foundation and has been dubbed by staff as Researcher/Translator Prof. D.
SCP-4470 was discovered when it first arrived at the Foundation requesting to see Dr. Clef carrying documents containing invaluable information on SCP-███ in its beak. SCP-4470 was assigned a position in Site-19 when it became clear that it had no malicious intent in working with the Foundation.
Addendum 4470.1: In spite of its generally peaceable nature, SCP-4470 displays a thrilling-seeking side to its personality. This behavior usually occurs when the entity is unattended for too long or is granted a "hands-on" position during research. Tests encouraging these behaviors have been conducted in order to understand the full extent of SCP-4470's capabilities, a few of which have been listed below.
Test Log:
Test 4470-04
Test Requested: Falling from over 40,000ft without a parachute
Purpose: To demonstrate the power of its deflector shield.
Resulting: SCP-4470 was dropped from a carrier jet at 50,000ft without a parachute as per the agreement, the entity's terminal velocity was clocked at 675mph. However, upon impact, SCP-4470 seemed to phase into the ground without a trace. It reappeared (2)mins later in a crater 120ft in diameter precisely 1 mile away from his original target dazed but undamaged. When questioned for its sudden relocation, SCP-4470 claimed that it did not want to vaporize the prairie-dog town 3ms away from its former landing site.
Researcher Notes: "While Prof. D was able to complete the experiment successfully, it still doesn't explain how he was able to spot the prairie dogs and relocate himself before hitting them. Well, he at least has more humanity than some co-workers I know." Researcher Dr.████
Test 4470-07
Test Requested: To be placed into SCP-173's containment
Motivation: To demonstrate SCP-4470's effectiveness in combat and willpower against and an unbeatable opponent.
Results: SCP-4470 was placed into SCP-173's containment cell and all direct observation of the entities was ceased for over (5)hrs as per agreement. No activity between the items was recorded for 5 1/2hrs until the silence was abruptly broken when the sound of an explosion was heard from within the cell. When visual contact was reestablished with the entities, SCP-173 was observed standing against the western wall of its cell which had experienced moderate structural damage. SCP-4470 was located at the adjacent side of the chamber, momentarily stunned by the force of its deflector shield's activation but was otherwise unharmed. SCP-4470 removed itself from SCP-173's cell with no further incident, SCP-173 resumed its normal behavior shortly after its chamber was repaired.
Researcher's Notes:"It appears that SCP-4470's defenses are effective at repelling SCP-173's attacks; this could prove useful if we manage to replicate this technology, but we'll require further research to do so," Guest Researcher Prof.█████
Test 4470-14
Test Requested: To write a 400-page non-fiction novel based on events that it had witnessed.
Purpose: To study its long-term memory and literary skills.
Results: SCP-4470 managed to complete the novel within five days with the aid of its "hands" during which needed several prompts to continue writing. The novel was titled "The Marvelous Adventures of Professor D." following the adventures of a dodo bird referred to as "Professor D." that attained sapience and immortality after consuming an alien artifact mistaking it for food. As the story progressed, "Professor D." would travel the world, witness many monumental events in history, and encounter many extraordinary creatures (some of which being notable SCPs within Foundation custody). The story concluded with the entity's arrival to the Foundation. The original novel was moved to Dr.█████'s office for personal reasons.
Researcher Notes: "It's a shame I couldn't publish this novel, but at least some people will able to read it." Prof.█
