Item #: SCP-RYCE
Object Class: Keter-Thaumiel
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-RYCE is to be contained in a standard humanoid containment cell at Site-19. SCP-RYCE is to be contained at Site 193-R until further notice. As normal containment procedures appear to worsen SCP-RYCE's anomalous effects, and dampen the foundation-oriented efforts of SCP-RYCE-A, SCP-RYCE is to be "contained" through non-containment. Procedure BET (See Addendum 1) is to be consistently followed by MTF-42069 ("Headasses"), aided whenever possible by SCP-RYCE-A.
While SCP-RYCE is acting in a stage 1 memetic "passive" event or a stage 2 memetic "frustration" event, regular socialization is encouraged. As references to SCP-RYCE's "name" appear to function normally online, the use of its "name" in conversation or reference to the entity is also encouraged. SCP-RYCE-A's latest creation, dubbed "Ryce bot," is a script for the communication program "Slack" that assists in containment by consistently mentioning variations of SCP-RYCE's name. The Foundation is currently researching the possibility that SCP-RYCE's anomalous effects could be permanently neutralized through the use of AI.
Should SCP-RYCE reach a stage 3 memetic "pressure" event during any point in its containment, all foundation agents in the area are to observe Procedure LIGMA (See Addendum 1).
Should SCP-RYCE reach a stage 4 memetic "control" event, SCP-RYCE and SCP-RYCE-A are to be administered amnestics and all instances of SCP-RYCE-B are to be eliminated.
Description: SCP-RYCE is a humanoid entity capable of appearing as a human male of average weight and an average height of 5'8". While SCP-RYCE never appears to noticeably change form, MTF-42069 has noted around 158 subtle height changes in the past 16 years of containment. SCP-RYCE's ability to shapeshift does not appear to extend beyond this and so is not considered hazardous.
SCP-RYCE's anomalous effects become apparent in a series of events, triggered when SCP-RYCE is not consistently referred to as any of the following names/acronyms:
- Rhys
- Ryce
- Either of the above, with hyphenated words attached before or after
- Either of the above, with extra letters in the middle of the word, such as rhhhhhyyyyys or ryyycccccce.
SCP-RYCE normally remains in a stage 1 memetic "passive" event, and remains there as long as continued references are made to its "name."
The four stages of SCP-RYCE's memetic events have drastically different effects, although the method of containment generally remains the same.
- Stage 1 (memetic "passive" event, default state): SCP-RYCE acts as a normal human. It gives off a minor memetic aura that appears to exist to assist in keeping SCP-RYCE at this event state. The aura causes anyone in the area of effect (20 meter2 radius) to feel comfortable and friendly around SCP-RYCE, and to say its "name" whenever possible. Affected subjects are generally calmed by the presence of this effect, and experience a significant increase in cognitive ability for 2-5 hours.
- Stage 2 (memetic "frustration" event): SCP-RYCE acts as normal. The minor memetic aura shifts to cause those around it to become frustrated at any and every activity, and to blame SCP-RYCE for their frustrations. This stage is rare, and is normally handled by SCP-RYCE-A. The heightened frustration and blame will cause affected individuals to frequently refer to SCP-RYCE by its "name," generally causing SCP-RYCE to revert to stage 1.
- Stage 3 (memetic "pressure" event): SCP-RYCE becomes near-dormant, often staying in one spot for hours at a time. The memetic aura continues to project a frustration effect, but begins increasing in range and power. Affected individuals have been noted to repeatedly yell SCP-RYCE's "name" out of sheer anger. After approximately ██ minutes, individuals in the memetic radius will begin to pass out, or occasionally, have an aneurysm. After another █ minutes, SCP-RYCE will transition to stage 4.
- Stage 4 (memetic "control" event): SCP-RYCE returns to normal activity, apparently unaware of any issue. Anyone within the now ███ meter2 radius area of effect are awoken from unconsciousness as instances of SCP-RYCE-B. SCP-RYCE-B retain the form of the person affected, but are no longer conscious in any meaningful way. The instances will band together and attack any living creature besides SCP-RYCE. They will also not attack anything that repeats SCP-RYCE's "name." Only individuals rendered unconscious by a Stage 3 event will become instances of SCP-RYCE-B.
SCP-RYCE-A is formerly a senior researcher named Michael Francis at Site-19 who was affected by a Stage 4 event. It is the reason for SCP-RYCE's addendum Thaumiel classification, as it works to contain the memetic effects of SCP-RYCE. While it was necessary to neutralize the ██ instances of SCP-RYCE-B that breached containment, SCP-RYCE-A was found hiding in a storage room, and was deemed to not have been affected as normal by the Stage 4. Instead, SCP-RYCE-A became obsessed with containing SCP-RYCE, and proposed the procedure of containing SCP-RYCE in a more social environment than the Foundation, where Stage 2, 3, and 4 events can be dealt with more easily. SCP-RYCE-A has also discovered a way to focus the frustration from Stage 2 events on things SCP-RYCE specifically has done (examples include Doom, Volleyball, and something called a "Major Project") to increase the amount of times that the "name" is referenced.
