Item #: SCP-5XXX
Object Class: Safe Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: Due to its anomalous yet preventable behaviour, SCP-5XXX is to be kept hanging on the wall of room ZX-43 of Site-5XXX (see Addendum 5XXX.03 for information on the facility), covered by a .91 m x 1.52 m cloth. In the case of an incident, the subject is to be doused immediately by liquid helium immediately to prevent the spread of fire, and SCP-5XXX is to be once-again draped in the sheet cloth to prevent another incident. All non-subject personnel are to wear safety goggles, glasses or other form of lens in order to prevent an incident.
Description: SCP-5XXX appears to be a flat portrait with an intricate frame exhibiting a cube of spacetime (Addendum 5XXX.01) depicting the Fire of Southern Illinois, in which [REDACTED] burned down in an anomalous fire of unknown origin. Subjects affected, but not directly killed, by SCP-5XXX have referred to it as “the Infernal Portrait.”
Subjects of SCP-5XXX who have looked directly at it are put into a trance-like state where their body temperature gradually increases to the point of spontaneous combustion, and, if left alone, even incineration to where the subject is reduced to a mere mound of human ash on the floor. To read what SCP-5XXX interactions are like to the subjects, read Addendum 5XXX.05 for a uniform interview of all █ surviving subjects.
Addendum 5XXX.01: SCP-5XXX exhibits the cube of spacetime despite being mounted on a wall in an ordinary frame. Attempts to touch the display side of SCP-5XXX have failed, as have reconnaissance missions into SCP-5XXX.
Addendum 5XXX.02: SCP-5XXX was labeled as "safe" until an unobserved incident where the cloth that is always draped over it was noticeably moved. Following such event, it was labeled as "euclid" until potential future events where it can once more be labeled as "safe".
Addendum 5XXX.03: Site-5XXX (Armed Dimly-Lit Containment Site-5XXX) is a facility that was originally constructed as a research facility for SCP-5XXX in the remains of [REDACTED], Illinois in ██-██-198█. However, with the discovery of SCP-5XXY in the office of Dr. Lorae, our chief psychoanalyst and warden of the facility, the facility is now in its current state.
Addendum 5XXX.04: Interview conducted by Dr. Lorae with Subject 5XXX-█ in the Recovery Ward concerning an interaction. All other interviews resulted in similar ways, the notable differences being the subjects’ wordings of the incidents, as well as the omission of Dr. Lorae' muttering in further interviews.
Dr. Lorae: Interview number [REDACTED], subject is [DATA EXPUNGED], a.k.a. Subject 5XXX-█, currently in the Recovery ward of Site-5XXX. Hello. How are you feeling?
Subject 5XXX-█: Like I was just pulled from a fire.
Lorae: That’s understandable. What could you tell us about your experience with the painting?
5XXX-█: You mean that… that Infernal Portrait?
Lorae: Yes.
5XXX-█: Well, at first, it was just a painting just begging to be looked at. I couldn’t help but look at it.
Lorae: Then what?
5XXX-█: Well, then the embers floating there in the air and the flames just started moving as if it were the actual fire in slow motion, and I swear that I heard a small campfire.
Lorae: What happened next?
5XXX-█: The fire moved faster, the sound grew louder. Before I knew it, it was like I was seeing the actual Fire of Southern Illinois. Don’t tell me you didn’t hear or see any of it!
Lorae: I did not. Were you aware of your combustion?
5XXX-█: Not until you guys tore me away from it.
Lorae: Thank you for your cooperation. The interview is over. [To security personnel] Let's leave the room.
[The sound of footsteps from multiple subjects is heard before the closing of a door. The sound of a revolver being loaded and primed soon follows.]
5XXX-█: If the interview is over, then why are you still here?
[The sound of a gunshot is heard, followed by a single set of footsteps at walking speed, then by several sets of footsteps at running speed.]
<End Log>
Addendum 5XXX.05: The facility is attempting to locate the person who killed each of the D-Class personnel who survived their encounter with SCP-5XXX
