Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5293 is to be kept in a sealed 5x 5x 5x room and placed on top of an iron pillar inside a glass case. Case will be automatically opened using a button in the case of experiments¹. Glass is 2" thick. The room temperature of SCP-5293's chamber must be -43 degrees or lower at all times. Two (2) male guards equipped with M17 pistols and ammo with no history of a criminal record will be stationed outside SCP-5293's chamber at all times, expect at the ten-minute shift regulating every three hours. At this time the second pair of male guards will take their place, then the shift will continue repeating every three hours. Any person with a criminal history attempting to access SCP-5293 without authorized permission will be detained or terminated by guards².

Description: SCP-5293 is a hexagonal black toy lantern, measuring 4 1/2" in height and 3" in width. SCP-5293 consists of a horizontal row of star-shaped carvings on all six sides, which allows the viewer a look inside the lantern. Inside, the lantern houses a battery lit fake candle that can be turned on off by toggling the power switch on the bottom.

When SCP-5293 comes into direct contact with a person of serious criminal history, the fake candle inside SCP-5293 will suddenly become a real flame in under four (4) seconds, regardless of whether it is turned "on" or "off". This flame does not effect the lantern itself. The person who has made contact with SCP-5293 will see the name "William", who is the name of a boy who was killed³ appear on the whichever side they are viewing SCP-5293, and will begin to experience immense pain in they're chest, often described as "cramps". Person will then begin to "crumble" to ashes from their feet up, until their is nothing left of them but a pile of ash. This process can last from two (2) seconds to fifty (50) minutes. The flame inside SCP-5293 will then continue to stay lit until subject's remains are swept away and cleared from the room in which SCP-5293 is, and approximately five (5) seconds later, it will then return to a normal, fake candle.

Not all criminal activities result in death by SCP-5293. Testing has shown that people who have committed murder, sell of illegal drugs, sexual abuse, homicide, hijacking, or armed robberies are the ones the lantern "chooses" to burn, whereas people who have been fined, gotten speeding tickets, traffic violations, vandalism, or a school disciplinary offense, does not result in death by SCP-5293, or any means of harm from the candle at all, neither does the candle light up.

If a female who has committed serious crimes comes into contact with SCP-5293, they will burn faster then males. If a male with serious crimes comes into contact with SCP-5293, they will burn slower. In normal room temperature or higher, SCP-5293 will remain a real flame and burn anyone within two (2) feet who possess a history of serious crime, and the person will burn to ashes in under five (5) minutes, regardless of whether or not they actually touched it. This affect has not been seen to work on anyone who has no serious criminal record or people with small, minor crimes. In order to prevent SCP-5293 from accidentally killing both test subjects and employees, SCP-5293's room is set to -43 degrees or lower.⁴

Test #1

Type: Heavier Crimes

Test Subject: D-9522, male, Caucasian. Arrested for three cases of third-degree murder and two cases of selling illegal drugs in the state of [DATA EXPUNGED].

Subject was led into SCP-5293's chamber. Subject was provided with a thick fur jacket made from [REDACTED] to keep out the cold. Subject was not told of object's abilities. Scientists watched from security cameras as the glass case opened and D-9522 approached SCP-5293. Subject was confused but cautious, and did not make contact. Subject was ordered to touch SCP-5293. Subject gave a worried look to the cameras and took two (2) steps away from the lantern. D-9522 was threatened with termination. Subject still refused. Subject was terminated by guards and test ended.

Test #2

Type: Lesser Crimes

Test Subject: D-6712, female, Asian. Arrested for one case of armed robbery from a small supermarket in [DATA REDACTED], [DATA REDACTED], and the sell of cocaine to ███ ██, a ██ year old minor.

Subject was let in SCP-5293's chamber. Subject was provided with a thick fur jacket made from [REDACTED] to keep out the cold. Subject was told minimal about SCP-5293's abilities, going as far as the fact that the flame inside could become lit. Subject was not told how. Scientists watched as glass case was opened and D-6712 approached SCP-5293. Subject circled around the pillar for approximately a minute, seeming to "study" SCP-5293. After three (3) minutes of this circling, subject was told to make contact with SCP-5293. Subject complied, and touched the lantern with the tips of their fingers, then jerked back hurriedly. SCP-5293's candle lit up. Subject reported feeling nothing until two (2) minutes later, when they crumpled onto the ground, apparently in extreme pain. D-6712 clutched their stomach and bent over, as if trying to regurgitate something. Subject's feet then began falling to ashes as the rest of their body did the same in less then two (2) seconds. Subject's pain was over quick. Guards came into the room and swept out subject's ashes. Flame returned to normal and test was ended.

Test #3

Type: Higher Crimes

Test Subject: D-3792, male, European. Arrested for three (3) cases of second-degree murder, impersonation of law enforcement, and two (2) attempted rapes.

Subject was led into SCP-5293's chamber. Subject was provided with a thick fur jacket made from [REDACTED] to keep out the cold. Subject was not told of object's abilities. Scientists watched from security cameras as the glass case opened and subject approached SCP-5293. D-3792 was quickly ordered to make contact with SCP-5293. Subject hesitantly complied, touching SCP-5293 with their index finger. SCP-5293's candle lit up. Subject began showing immense distress and pain exactly one (1) minute later. Subject began to scream, looking to the camera and yelling, "Help me! God, help me! Please! I'm burn—" D-3792 then fell to the floor. Subject was extremely petrified. Subject tried to scream but not sound emitted from subject's mouth. Subject burned into ash five (5) minutes later. Guards came into the room and swept out subject's ashes. Flame returned to normal and test was ended.

Test #4

Type: Lesser Crimes

Test Subject: D-7392, male, Caucasian. Arrested for one case of non-armed robbery at [DATA EXPUNGED].

Subject was led into SCP-5293's chamber. Subject was provided with a thick fur jacket made from [REDACTED] to keep out the cold. Subject was told little about SCP-5293's abilities, only that the flame inside could become lit and they had to "be careful". Thermal heat sensors were attached to security cameras. Scientists watched as the glass case opened and subject approached SCP-5293. D-7392 was ordered to touch SCP-5293. Subject refused. Subject was threatened with termination. Subject complied hesitantly. Subject touched SCP-5293 lightly with their fingers. Subject reported nothing. SCP-5293 did not light up. Ten (10) minutes later, there was still no sign of pain from subject. Thermal heat cameras picked up no sign of any heat whatsoever. Guards came into the room and escorted subject back to their cell and test was ended.

Test #5

Type: Heavier Crimes

Test Subject: D-6393, male, Chinese. Arrested for two (2) cases of homicide and the killing of one (1) high-ranking officer.

Subject was led into SCP-5293's chamber. Subject was provided with a thick fur jacket made from [REDACTED] to keep out the cold. Thermal hear sensors were placed on both of subject's legs and arms. Subject was told nothing about SCP-5293's abilities. Scientists watched from security cameras as the glass case opened and D-6393 approached SCP-5293. Subject was ordered to touch SCP-5293. Subject refused. Subject was ordered a second time. Subject still refused. Subject was ordered a third time and threatened with termination. Subject complied. D-6393 touched SCP-5293 with their thumb. SCP-5293's candle lit up. Two (2) seconds later, subject was then ordered to step out of the room. Subject complied and was monitored closely. Six (6) seconds later, subject began showing signs of cramps and yells of pain. Subject tried running to the nearest door. Subject was stopped by guards. Thermal heat sensors detected a temperature of 2012 degrees Fahrenheit rising at D-6393's feet, though no fire of any kind was seen by researchers or guards. Subject burned to ash in four (4) seconds. Thermal heat cameras detected nothing after. SCP-5293's candle was still an active flame. D-6393's ashes were brought into SCP-5293's room and then swept out again. Flame returned to normal and test was ended.

Addendum 5293 #2

 + Discovery of SCP-5293

SCP-5293 was discovered in a small jewelry in [DATA REDACTED] where a robbery had happened just two (2) hours before. SCP-5293 was the resting on the counter near a shattered glass case. Police asked the two employees working there at the time what had happened. They said the robber had come in, threatened them with a gun, broke into the class housing a priceless diamond ring, and began loading expensive jewelry into a bag, all while the employees had been held hostage. Moments later the men reported the robber suddenly yelling in pain and dropping his bag, were the store items fell out. Four (4) minutes later, the robber dissolved into ash in front of them.

Police checked security cameras located above the cash register, and found nothing that could've burned the robber, except for SCP-5293's lit candle, which wasn't even close to where he had been. Police also found the robber had been thirty-six (36) year old █████ ███, a man the police had been searching two (2) years for his crimes of rape, five (5) armed robberies, and three (3) second-degree murders. Police asked the store employees if they knew what had burned the robber. The employees gave in and told them it had been SCP-5293, and that the lantern had never touched the robber once. Police called two (2) Foundation staff working █ miles away to notify them of the situation. The staff heard of the jewelry stores' employees story and gave them amnestics, then took SCP-5293 back to their work to be tested on.

Addendum 5293 #3

+ Burning Differences Between Genders - Explanation

As of ██/██/20██, Foundation staff were told SCP-5293 had come into contact with another criminal before the jewelry stood incident. The lantern had originally been in the possession of a teenager, who lived with his parents, before a female robber came into their household, and in a rage with his parents for not closing a deal they had agreed on, shot and killed not only them, but the teen too. This is most likely the reason for why female criminals with serious crimes burn faster then males, as the lantern, or the teenager seeming to possess the lantern, wants revenge of some kind, and the jewelry store robbery probably why males burn slower, also the most likely reason why SCP-5293 decides to burn criminals in the first place. The lantern has most likely been possessed by some means, probably by the former teen, and has most likely only seen serious crimes, so this is also the case for why it only kills people with heavier crimes and not people with minor ones.
